Over the years I photographed thousands of flowers, with passion and joy, I never tire of them, hope you enjoy with me.

Another day, another flower, another lighting set-up, another composition.

Portrait of a Strelitzia reginae also called Bird of Paradise.

A stunningly beautiful flower, exotic, well to us, not in the countries where they grow naturally.

I always say it, one man's exotic is another man's 'daily'... lol

Strelitzia reginae is a monocotyledonous flowering plant indigenous to South Africa (the Cape Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal), where I saw them in nature.

Common names include crane flower or bird of paradise, though these names are also collectively applied to other species in the genus Strelitzia.

Its scientific name commemorates the British queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

The plant grows to 2 m tall, with large, strong leaves 25–70 cm long and 10–30 cm broad, produced on petioles up to 1 m long.

The leaves are evergreen and arranged in two ranks, making a fan-shaped crown. The flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks.

The hard, beak-like sheath from which the flower emerges is termed the spathe.

This is placed perpendicular to the stem, which gives it the appearance of a bird's head and beak; it makes a durable perch for holding the sunbirds which pollinate the flowers.

The flowers, which emerge one at a time from the spathe, consist of three brilliant orange sepals and three purplish-blue or white petals.

Two of the blue or white petals are joined together to form an arrow-like nectary.

Thank you, M, (*_*)

In pink...

Symphoricarpos, with common names in English of Snowberry, Waxberry or Ghostberry, is a small genus of about 15 species of deciduous shrubs in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae.

Common Snowberry (S. albus) is an important winter food source for quail, pheasant and grouse, but is considered poisonous to humans.

I had to angle them, the berries were really hiding under the leaves!

Thanks for visiting, Magda (*_*)

Some call this Flowerotica?

The human body as a landscape/decor...

This one with green flower-balls, Asclepias fruticosa fruits, they are light and may look spiky but they aren't, no model was harmed during the making of this image, LOL... part of an original set for an exhibition "SALON des DAMES".

SWAN MILKWEED…

Gomphocarpus fruticosus: Asclepias fruticosa is the old botanical name, Narrowleaf cotton bush, Swan bush, Swan milkweed the popular ones.

Inflated green and later light brown, papery pod or follicle; short bristly hair cover the outer surface; dark seeds have silvery cotton wool-like attachments that facilitate wind distribution.

Asclepias fruticosa is a species of milkweed native to South Africa.

Brought this from Sardinia to photograph in my studio… what happened next?

Due to the heat given off by the lights in the studio, the pods started to open and the pod opened and released the seeds.

Hundreds of seeds fluffing from that one pod.

In a matter of minutes all of the seeds floated out of the pod.

Once the process of release started, it could not be stopped.

I loved shooting this small miracle of nature in my studio.

THANK you, M, (*_*)

HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY.

The beautiful North-Yorkshire Dales.

Often at the bottom you will find a stream, could be small like this one or quite wide!

We had some spring rain and now everything looks so fresh with young green.

The Dales are laced with loose-stone walls.

How Green Was My Valley is a 1939 novel by Richard Llewellyn.

The port, le Vieux Bassin, is bordered on three sides by buildings of two distinct styles; large stone houses on the Southside (Quai Saint-Etienne) and high and narrow wooden houses to the North (Quai Sainte Catherine).

Both are named after the churches that stand on their grounds.

Behind these quarters rises the Eglise Sainte Catherine, the largest wooden church in France, built by the ship carpenters of Honfleur shortly after the 100 years war.

A law required that the first houses built could not exceed 7.62 metres on the ground floor and not be more than 3 stories tall.

Yet a few decades later, because of its economic and demographic development, Honfleur was facing a serious housing crisis.

For lack of space, houses were then built one on top of the other.

In fact, these buildings were essentially like two adjoining ones, only instead of being built side by side; they were built on top of one another: the base house had its first floor on the bank, while the second one also had a first floor but it gave onto the opposite hill.

On one side, St. Catherine Quay, they rise to narrow slate-and-timber heights of five to seven stories, housing restaurants or galleries in the ground floors.

Honfleur is a treasure trove!

Full of lots of small shops, boutiques, deli’s, bigger and smaller Art venues.

AAHHH, les belles, vieilles façades!!!

And then we are once more at sea, the lights of France receding fast, my eyes are moist… can’t see through the lens anymore, must be the wind speed picking up!

Aconitum, commonly known as aconite, monkshood, wolf's bane, leopard's bane, mouse-bane, women's bane, devil's helmet, queen of poisons, or blue rocket.

It is a genus of over 250 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae.

These herbaceous perennial plants are chiefly native to the mountainous parts of the Northern Hemisphere, growing in the moisture-retentive but well-draining soils of mountain meadows.

Most species are extremely poisonous and must be dealt with carefully.

The tall, erect stem is crowned by racemes of large blue, purple, white, yellow, or pink zygomorphic flowers with numerous stamens.

They are distinguishable by having one of the five petaloid sepals (the posterior one), called the galea, in the form of a cylindrical helmet, hence the English name monkshood, and in Flemish: monnikskap.

Of course I love flowers in the home, for the brightness they bring and the fragrance they share, yet, I have another agenda when I buy them... I just know I'll photograph them, cannot resist! I MAKE time!

The Stargazer Lilly was created in 1978 by Leslie Woodriff, a Lilly breeder in California.

The plant is an Oriental hybrid lily which he called "Stargazer," because the blooms faced the sky.

This Lilly is now fairly common throughout.

"Lillium "Stargazer" (the Stargazer Lilly) is a hybrid of the Oriental group.

The ASPCA reports the plant as being toxic to cats.

Mature, it grows to a height of 36 inches with a spread of 12 to 16 inches with an upright form.

It has a fast growth rate and should be planted in full sun in well drained loamy or sandy soil.

The flower is pink, red, and white, and is sweetly fragrant.

The plant produces 4 to 5 flowers per stem." (Wikipedia)

The rain-damaged flowers had opened in full glory.

More from our garden, with all the rain we've had it is difficult to find flowers that have not been damaged...

The Cranesbill is really the TRUE Geranium, what we too often call Geranium is the Pelargonium, with flower heads and not hardy like these.

The name "cranesbill" derives from the appearance of the seed-heads, which have the same shape as the bill of a crane.

Hands, instruments of mass construction!

Willem Vermandere is a famous and much celebrated Belgian Artist.

My friend is a sculptor, singer-songwriter, musician, writer, poet and painter, but also a wonderful philosopher and raconteur.

We always enjoy a get together when we visit the Continent, this time no different!

Here, after a whole animated discussion about why we do what we do, how to do it well etc...

Here, he had told us the fascinating story of this old ebony clarinet, still in the original, albeit battered instrument case, he then for a moment disappeared into his own world of melodious sound, eyes closed.

We got back to our earlier conversation, about PASSION!!!

You have to have PASSION for your medium!

For a photographer we agreed that that should be all about the light!!!

As you can see, his hands are his tools, during the week, he carves, cleaves, chisels, chops and files on his quarry treasures, the granite, marble... all very rough on his hands, then on the week-ends, his hands become the softer tools as he performs as a musician, stroking and playing the delicate instruments, strings and keys.

Combining the two passions is a constant concern to him! Both disciplines so important to him in their own way! Both depending on his hands.

The gorgeous afternoon-light fell onto his hands, that afternoon in his studio.

Such moments are pure magic.

The seniority of officers and non-commissioned officers is signified by the amount of lace worn on collars and cuffs; the more lace the more senior the rank.

The Pikemen & Musketeers are dressed and equipped as members of the Company would have been in the 1640s and are tasked with providing a ceremonial bodyguard for the Lord Mayor of the City of London and escorting him when he is on official business.

Company of Pikemen & Musketeers to parade no more than 63 members at any one time, that being the size of a company in the 17th century.

Only veteran members of the HAC who have had proven efficient service in the HAC’s Territorial Army regiment are eligible to join the Company of Pikemen & Musketeers.

All join in the lowest rank, regardless of any previous military rank held.

Members must be fit enough to competently complete the march of the Lord Mayor’s Show.

Military medals and insignia are permitted to be worn.

Members are unpaid but give freely of their own time for drill practice and rehearsals as well as the parades and guards themselves.

All make a significant contribution towards the cost of their own uniform and are expected to clean and look after their armour, muskets and other kit to maintain the highest standards of turnout for the many prestigious occasions they parade for.

Past Heraklion, the super drive along the sea, you turn off towards the mountains(still snow on them!), and meandering through lemon and orange groves, we arrive in the village of Fodele.

I wanted to go there, because it is the birthplace of EL GRECO.

A small museum was built exhibiting some of his, I suspect earlier, work.

Unfortunately, they had closed early.

However, in this village, the specialty of the ladies is Macramé, they sit in the street, with their 2 chairs, knotting all day long.

This is Barbara, she specially took her tools out again for the photo, because she'd been on her way home.

When Barbara realised the 'photoshoot' had come to an end, she showed me some finished bags.

Now, I'm a photographer and prefer pockets, but she had been so kind I really couldn't resist, what a businesswoman!

So, I bought one, paid, she went inside for change.

As she came out she was holding out those two beautiful oranges, fresh off the tree...

HOME. Above the white cliffs of Dover in Kent, THE CASTLE.

Dover Castle is a medieval castle in Dover, Kent, England.

It was founded in the 11th century and has been described as the "Key to England" due to its defensive significance throughout history.

Some sources say it is the largest castle in England, a title also claimed by Windsor Castle.

Always nice to go and good to come home!

Fishing nets have been used widely in the past, including by stone age societies.

The oldest known fishing net is the net of Antrea, found with other fishing equipment in the Karelian town of Antrea.

The net was made from willow, and dates back to 8300 BC.

The remnants of another fishing net dates back to the late Mesolithic, and were found together with sinkers at the bottom of a former sea.

American Native Indians on the Columbia River wove seine nets from spruce root fibres or wild grass, again using stones as weights.

For floats they used sticks made of cedar which moved in a way which frightened the fish and helped keep them together.

With the help of large canoes, pre-European Maori deployed seine nets which could be over one thousand metres long.

The nets were woven from green flax, with stone weights and light wood or gourd floats, and could require hundreds of men to haul.

Fishing nets are well documented in antiquity.

They appear in Egyptian tomb paintings from 3000 BC.

In ancient Greek literature, Ovid makes many references to fishing nets, including the use of cork floats and lead weights.

Pictorial evidence of Roman fishing comes from mosaics which show nets.

In a parody of fishing, a type of gladiator called retiarius was armed with a trident and a cast net.

In Norse mythology the sea giantess Rán uses a fishing net to trap lost sailors.

References to fishing nets can also be found in the New Testament.

Jesus Christ was reputedly a master in the use of fishing nets.

Fishing nets have not evolved greatly, and many contemporary fishing nets would be recognised for what they are in Neolithic times.

I would have that on my wall... LOL

Bruges, Belgium, on one of the many bridges over the canals (well, it IS the Venice of the North!), these two young ladies were playing their tunes, busking their way through the different countries.

A nyckelharpa is a traditional Scandinavian musical instrument.

It is a string instrument or chordophone.

And Pipe-smokers! ... On the German Christmas market, you put some incense in, and the smoke comes out their mouths.

The nutcrackers that we see at Christmas time, we call the wooden toy soldier nutcrackers even though they come in many different characters besides the traditional soldier.

These nutcrackers were seen in many homes in the Erzgebirge (the mountainous region in the eastern part of Germany which borders the Czech Republic) even before 1800.

This was a mining region, and during the long Winter months, the men spent their time making wooden products for the family.

It was tradition that a nutcracker in the window kept the family safe from evil spirits and danger.

he first nutcrackers were made in the design of kings and soldiers.

They were made by common folk, who liked to have the kings and soldiers working for them, cracking their nuts...

In 1872 Wilhelm Füchtner, known as the “father of the nutcracker,” made the first commercial production of nutcrackers using the lathe to create many of the same design.

The one I photographed here, about 30 cm tall, is actually NOT a nutcracker, though his mouth does open and close, it is a music-box, a collector's item..

Wishing you a lovely day and thank you for all the comments, M, (*_*)

A stunningly beautiful flower, exotic, well to us, not in the countries where they grow naturally. I always say it, one man's exotic is another man's 'daily'... lol

I again tried to photograph them in the 'style’ that I love so much, a bit moody, dramatic, theatrical, playing with the light and dof.

COLOUR./ flowers/ dried/ petals

I call this Petal-Art.

The strip-tease.

They curve and twist in a gorgeous way.

I have wild yellow poppies in the garden, they are the most ephemeral of flowers.

Everything has to be ready before you bring them in, bang, a few photographs, put them in water, in no time the pretty heads are hanging.

Then the petals start their final dance, they curve and twist in a gorgeous way.

The colour changes from yellow to ochre to orange...

When I came in the next morning, the petals had dropped off and the seed-box and stamens stood naked.

Wishing you all the best and thank you, M, (*_*)

Flamborough Head is one of the most spectacular areas of chalk cliffs in Britain, standing 400 feet high.

The chalk was laid down millions of years ago when the last dinosaurs were roaming the earth.

The cliffs are home to one of the largest sites of nesting sea birds in England, boasting a rare colony of gannets.

The cliff top walk is a bird-spotter's paradise, and visitors to the headland include oyster catchers, gulls, eider ducks, and cormorants.

There's also a wide variety of plant and wildlife species.

The one photo is with THE NEEDLE...

As well as its distinctive white cliffs, there are coves, sea caves and stacks along the coastline.

In the Negev Desert, which is a stone desert in Southern Israel, you have a part, with different coloured canyons, the Pink canyon, the Red canyon, the White canyon, some of them in Timna, where you also find the ruins of the place where King Solomon had his copper mines.

It is an awesome place, hot and silent, with some of the strangest rock-formations I ever photographed.

It was quite a climb down, with all our equipment, it was out of season, we were by ourselves and one evening, the sun, as usual, dropped down quickly, taking with it the warmth, we had waited for the sweet light and on our return almost got lost.

It is a fabulous environment, bright light and deep shadows, again what hits me is the absolute silence, the beauty and the sense of the deeper you go, the more you go back in time, a feeling of eternity came over me...

From jagged, dark granite to the softer coloured sandstone and limestone, these distinctions offer a delightful picture of the desert terrain.

To see them go to the previous separate

I walked around with my macro lens!

It was dreamlike!

Wisteria are the jewels of the botanic world; easy to look after, very long lived, vigorous, and simply magnificent when in flower.

The usual Wisteria you find on front walls of English cottages is Wisteria sinensis, which must be 7-8yrs old before it will flower.

Also popularly called 'purple rain'?

Wisteria (also spelled Wistaria or Wisteria) is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae, that includes ten species of woody climbing vines native to the Eastern United States and to China, Korea, and Japan.

Some species are popular ornamental plants, especially in China and Japan.

A fun bit of info here:

Wisteria vines climb by twining their stems either clockwise or counterclockwise round any available support.

They can climb as high as 20 m above the ground and spread out 10 m laterally.

The world's largest known Wisteria vine is in Sierra Madre, California, measuring more than 1 acre (0.40 ha) in size and weighing 250 tons, planted in 1894 of the Chinese lavender variety!

ALHAMBRA, GRANADA, SPAIN…

The Alhambra, the complete form of which was Calat Alhambra, and the Generalife were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

It ia a palace and fortress complex in Muslim Architecture.

The places open for public visits are divided into four areas: Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Partal and Generalife.

Portico and pool of the early 14th-century Partal...

HERE is: The portico, with its five arches, overlooks a large pool in the centre of the garden.

Behind the portico is the main room, located inside the tower known as Las Damas.

WELL WORTH A VISIT!!! Order your tickets before hand or you might not get in! It is extremely popular.

The access to the beautiful and exotic Nasrid Palaces is different from the rest of the monument, because it is strictly limited to the half- hour indicated on the ticket due the restrictions on maximum capacity in this area (300 people).

This is inside, Patio de los Arrayanes (Court of the Myrtles) and is also called the Patio de la Alberca (from Arabic "Birka" meaning pool).

Photographing is difficult because of the crowds...

But, if, like me, one of your virtues is 'patience' (NOT!)... people move on with their guides and staying behind a little could pay off, like it did for me.

Don't be fooled by the emptiness! LOL.

It is always good to drive through West Flanders, through the Polders, through the fertile flat land.

Dotted with small villages, the church in the middle and surrounded with houses.

Like a cluster.

The road is behind the coast and dunes.

We pass quite a few farms and typically, in this flat land, they are surrounded by tall sweeping trees, to protect from the eternal wind.

This looks like a more modern farm built within.

But still, a familiar sight.

It is Spring, the land lies ready.

These images depict the essence of my motherland.

Flanders’ natural beauty is best found in the polders of the Flemish lowlands.

An atmosphere of peace and tranquility pervades.

How I miss it.

It is more than time for me to be back!

THANK you, M, (*_*)
