PHYSALIS alkekengi or Chinese Lantern Plant, they are native from southern Europe east across southern Asia to Japan.

Popular for the papery bright-orange lantern pods that develop around the ripening fruit, these are often cut and used for Thanksgiving and Halloween arrangements.

Plants are aggressive spreaders, and best kept out of the perennial border so they don't take over.

Also can be grown in tubs.

Small white flowers appear in midsummer, over a bushy mound of coarse green leaves.

Pods are green at first, but should be harvested as soon as the orange colour develops, the leaves stripped then stems hung upside down to dry in a warm dark room.

One of the important rituals when visiting a shrine in Japan takes place at the water purification fountain, known as the chozuya or temizuya next to the entrance.

Worshippers use ladles called hishaku to scoop up water to wash their hands and sometimes their mouths.

Due to the pandemic, many ladles have been removed from shrines and temples as a safety precaution.

Some people feared the custom was in danger of dying out.

A graphic is an image or visual representation of an object.

It is truly amazing, anywhere in the world, that if you visit a working harbour, and... you like that kind of 'clutter', what you will all find.

This was a very graphic something I discovered in Cornwall, it was love at first sight, le coup de foudre as the French say so beautifully.

A bit of rust, some drops of soldering, these two are joined for eternity.

Their glorious season is now.

Trees are an important part of the terrestrial ecosystem, providing essential habitats including many kinds of forest for communities of organisms.

Epiphytic plants such as ferns, some mosses, liverworts, orchids and some species of parasitic plants (e.g., mistletoe) hang from branches; these along with arboreal lichens, algae, and fungi provide micro-habitats for themselves and for other organisms, including animals.

Leaves, flowers and fruits are seasonally available.

On the ground underneath trees there is shade, and often there is undergrowth, leaf litter, and decaying wood that provide other habitat.

Trees stabilise the soil, prevent rapid run-off of rain water, help prevent desertification, have a role in climate control and help in the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem balance.

Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old.

Trees have been in existence for 370 million years.

It is estimated that there are some three trillion mature trees in the world.

The beautiful hamlet of Fintele, in the municipality of Lo-Reninge, is located at the confluence of the Lovaart and the Yser.

The hamlet is protected as cultural heritage since 1994.

The ship-lock with its drawbridge is the main attraction.

But the latest years Fintele has developed to be an attractive junction for cyclism and hiking.

There is a central and open meeting space that is enriched with benches and a bike parking.

At the riverbank there is a landing stage for boats and a resting area for hikers.

Fintele,lies where reeds and orris grow.

The Yser flows to Nieuwpoort between water lily's and buttercups

Cattails control and subdue its riverbed without hiccups.

West Flanders, almost France.

PLACES, where I find my PEACE...

The verticals, they stand straight and tall, the supports for Summer's roof of leaves.

I am used to solitude, silence, peace.

A change is nice, yet it can become too much.

Sometimes I crave silence.

So we are off to Damme, now I must tell you, when I revisit my beloved Flanders, I have not really been unless I have not spent time here, our favourite spot.

The Canals of West-Flanders, Oostkerke/Damme/Brugge...

A few miles from Brugge, you have the small town of Damme.

In the Middle-Ages, this used to be the harbour of Brugge, one of the wealthiest cities in the North.

Due to silt the North Sea is now about 25 miles out, but Damme retained it's reputation for good food and beer, wonderful old buildings full of the history of revolutionary Flanders.

Centuries later Napoleon saw the importance of the area and ordered a system of canals to be built.

I stood in the middle of one of the bridges, in Oostkerke, across those magnificent tree-lined canals.

A UNIQUE landscape that just goes on and on and on... A photographer's paradise!

Classified to the UNESCO Patrimonium.

Warm cheer, Santé, and keep warm... Festive fragrances for Christmas

Mulled wine is a drink usually made with red wine along with various spices and fruits.

It is served hot or warm and may be alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

It is traditional during winter, especially around Christmas also called Glühwein.

It was first recorded as spiced and heated in First Century Rome.

The Romans travelled all across Europe, conquering much of it and trading with the rest.

The legions brought wine and viticulture with them up to the Rhine and Danube rivers and to the Scottish border bringing their recipes with them.

Very much part of tradition now!

... walking on a 'deserted' beach, camera in hand, taking deep gulp of that salty sea-air, hearing the waves break or the wavelets ripple.

Eyes scanning for beauty in the sky or in the sand, aah and then, and then discovering a natural painting of different seaweed at my feet.

We were on the North Sea Coast in The North East of England, Northumberland.

I do realise that it is not to everybody's taste, it takes a certain 'eye' to appreciate these.

The thing is, a photographer should not take images for other people, not to please anyone, I take them because they touch me...

It is always a bonus if others also see that.

THE POLYCHROME ROOFS of HOSPICES de BEAUNE.

The Hospices de Beaune or Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse in Beaune, France.

It was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor.

The original hospital building, the Hôtel-Dieu, one of the finest examples of fifteenth-century Burgundian architecture, is now a museum.

The polychrome roofs are inextricably linked to Burgundy.

Multicoloured roofs are an integral part of Burgundy.

In Pays Beaunois, those of the Hôtel Dieu in Beaune, Château de Santenay or Château de Corton André, for example, are particularly noteworthy.

A symbol of prestige.

Roofs made of glazed flat tiles draw colourful patterns characteristic of the traditional architecture of Burgundy.

Polychrome roofs are status symbols, whose opulence reflects that of the owner of the building.

With their luminous beauty, they initially covered the great cathedrals of the 13th century, then the princely residences of the 14th century, before becoming available to the rich urban bourgeoisie of the 15th century.

Hanging Around…

In the heat, that was about all anybody did, there wasn't much 'play' in the children either!

Taken at the provincial domain Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld.

A magic place, the castle, wonderful trees shaping long shaded walks, a lovely pond, a place for children to 'learn while they play', the farm transformed into a restaurant with a huge terrace, where we could all have an ice-cream and something to drink.

Most children are great to photograph, no inhibitions, this one was a natural model if ever I saw one...

Children love red, that does attract them?

From my travels, I am not one to bring home your usual souvenir, I rather have something that I will have for usage.

From Copenhagen, I bought a handy design herb/spice rack

From Kyoto, Japan, all I brought was this, from the MOMA shop just on the corner from where our hotel was.

I thought first it was a scarf, folded up in a pleated white box.

It said in Japanese characters what it was, but, never mind I had been seduced, it was too late, I bought it, and brought it home.

To my amazement, when I opened my treasure... it was NOT a scarf but a.... Japanese Tote bag!

TOMORROW, FATHERS'DAY...

In many countries, it was last Sunday in Belgium.

I wish all the daddies a good day. Hope you can see them, hug them and get hugged.

Girls are known to be daddy's girls.

However to boys they can very much be the model in their lives.

FATHERS, don't underestimate your importance and impact.

It is never easy being a parent!

Each child is an individual... does not come with an instruction manual! LOL

A lifelong commitment, that's being a parent, to care about smaller and bigger things, the being there, we have a duty, the morals that we teach them... that's what will (ideally?) shape them, let's not underestimate the impact we have on our nearest and dearest.

The 'father' figure is often one of strength and discipline, never forget that bit of tenderness, so needed in all our lives.

Clock towers are a specific type of building which house a turret clock and have one or more clock faces on the upper exterior walls.

Many clock towers are freestanding structures but they can also adjoin or be located on top of another building.

Some other buildings also have clock faces on their exterior but these structures serve other main functions.

Clock towers are a common sight in many parts of the world with some being iconic buildings.

One example is the Elizabeth Tower in London (usually called "Big Ben", although strictly this name belongs only to the bell inside the tower).

Although clock towers are today mostly admired for their aesthetics, they once served an important purpose.

Before the middle of the twentieth century, most people did not have watches, and prior to the 18th century even home clocks were rare.

The first clocks did not have faces, but were solely striking clocks, which sounded bells to call the surrounding community to work or to prayer.

They were therefore placed in towers so the bells would be audible for a long distance.

Clock towers were placed near the centres of towns and were often the tallest structures there.

As clock towers became more common, the designers realised that a dial on the outside of the tower would allow the townspeople to read the time whenever they wanted.

THE DAYS of COLOUR.

A Slinky is a toy pre-compressed helical spring invented by Richard James.

It can perform a number of tricks, including travelling down a flight of steps end-over-end as it stretches and re-forms itself with the aid of gravity and its own momentum,

In 1943, Richard James, a naval mechanical engineer stationed at the William Cramp and Sons shipyards in Philadelphia, was developing springs that could support and stabilise sensitive instruments aboard ships in rough seas.

James accidentally knocked one of the springs from a shelf, and watched as the spring "stepped" in a series of arcs to a stack of books, to a tabletop, and to the floor, where it re-coiled itself and stood upright.

James's wife Betty later recalled, "He came home and said, 'I think if I got the right property of steel and the right tension; I could make it walk.'"

James experimented with different types of steel wire over the next year, and finally found a spring that would ‘walk’.

Betty was dubious at first, but changed her mind after the toy was fine-tuned and neighbourhood children expressed an excited interest in it.

She dubbed the toy Slinky; meaning "sleek and graceful”.

On COLOURS...

Light and colour can influence how people perceive the area around them.

Different light sources affect how the colours of walls and other objects are seen.

Specific hues of colours seen under natural sunlight may vary when seen under the light from an incandescent (tungsten) light-bulb: lighter colours may appear to be more orange or "brownish" and darker colours may appear even darker.

Light and the colour of an object can affect how one perceives its positioning.

If light or shadow, or the colour of the object, masks an object's true contour (outline of a figure) it can appear to be shaped differently than it really is.

Objects under a uniform light-source will promote better impression of three-dimensional shape.

The colour of an object may affect whether or not it seems to be in motion. In particular, the trajectories of objects under a light source whose intensity varies with space are more difficult to determine than identical objects under a uniform light source.

Carl Jung is most prominently associated with the pioneering stages of colour psychology.

Jung was most interested in colours’ properties and meanings, as well as in Art’s potential as a tool for psychotherapy.

Colour has long been used to create feelings of cosiness or spaciousness.

However, how people are affected by different colour-stimuli varies from person to person.

There is evidence that colour preference may depend on ambient temperature.

People who are cold prefer warm colours like red and yellow while people who are hot prefer cool colours like blue and green.

A few studies have shown that cultural background has a strong influence on colour preference.

These studies have shown that people from the same region regardless of race will have the same colour preferences.

BRUGGE. Alongside the canal, still warm in the late-Summer sun I spot the first sign of Autumn on one of the old historic walls on the Groenerei.

Brugge will be so beautiful in full Autumn dress!

There was a mini pointed cabbage (Hispi cabbage) in the shop…

A creative photographer came along and spotted it, picked it up, turned it around and around, looking at all the beautiful angles… could not resist, saw the potential… and bought it.

Eagerly took it home, into a dark studio, positioned it, switched on the lights, set it it all up beautifully and made a portrait of the mini-cabbage… RESULT! LOLOLOL

Then, cut into a delicious vegetable soup. THE END.

As we arrive there, the ancient boats thunder around the Cornish waters at St Mawes, as they hosts one of the colourful Falmouth Working Boat Races.

The Falmouth Estuary has long been a traditional centre for these events with each community along the waterfront The Falmouth Working boat fleets still race and have done so for over 100 years.

Between the quiet yet imposing forts of Pendennis and St Mawes lie the glistening waters of the Fal Estuary.

It is one of the best all-round sailing and safe cruising grounds in the world.

One of St Mawes' annual highlights is the Falmouth Working Boat World Championships hosted by the village.

It sees the estuary erupting in a whirl of coloured topsails as these boats, the wooden working boats from the 1870/80s, many of them antique, battle it out to be the best in their fleet.

The working boats themselves are something of a legend around the Fal Estuary.

A bylaw of the Fal oyster fishery - that fishing may only be done while rowing or sailing (usually under full sail, no engines!) - is largely responsible for the preservation of the fleet.

It was pure magic to see them cut through the water.

THE THRILL of THAT FIRST SNOW, 7 O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING... by magda indigo

When I no longer feel the thrill to the first snow of the season, I'll know I'm growing old.

Unaware, in our cosy Victorian home... I woke up and I sensed that, although the curtains were closed and it was still dark... how the 'light' had changed and there was the unmistakable silence that comes with snow... looked out and saw the wonderland, I'm sure my eyes grew bigger, I know my heart jumped and beat faster.

I squealed with joy and wonder at all this beauty...

I ran upstairs for my camera.

By that time, the night receding, morning started to break, the traffic slowly started, some cars ventured out, people slip-sliding down to work.

The snow stopped falling for awhile, the silence still deafening.

In this image I love the 'chaud-froid' the coldness from the night and the warmth from the Low pressure sodium (LPS) lamps, also known as sodium oxide (SOX) lamps.

Today it is almost all gone, but a memory and a few images... the goal of photography, to safe-keep them!!!

I handheld my camera, very low shutter-speed, steadying against the wall and yes I have very steady hands!

Focus... take a deep breath... hold still... take the image, breathe out! DONE

We live in the Victorian Quarter! Lovely!
