Looking after our safety... The North Sea can be treacherous.
It is endless, I remember growing up in Ostend, the summer days spent on the beach, in the sea, doing all kinds of activities...
Even when the weather was less clement, and the sea rough we met up with friends, always finding something to do.
By the looks of it, not much has changed.
Enjoy!
With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, hope you all have a great time! M, (*_*)

The marble quarry in Orosei, Sardinia.
There is some activity and a dusty place to leave the car.
I climb up for a better view.
The massive machines look like mini toys!
THIS IS a closer take, you can see what I mean!
The sheer scale of the quarry is breath taking.
This 50,000 m2 site produces 60,000 tons per year of the finest beige marble in Italy.
Workers use diamond wire saws to make the vertical cuts in the marble blocks and chain cutters are used for horizontal cuts.
Hope this brings a bit of joy again, have a good day and thank you for your visit, so very much appreciated, Magda, (*_*)

Some scholars believe that the name "carnation" comes from "coronation" or "corone" (flower garlands), as it was one of the flowers used in Greek ceremonial crowns.
Carnations are often worn on special occasions, especially at weddings.
At the turn of the century dandies would not leave the house without a white or red carnation in the buttonhole of their suit.
With the end of this tradition and the fact that carnations are so easily cultivated and grown, the flower has lost some of its popularity.
Although apparently in the UK it is still the most sold flower…
However, carnations are not only beautiful and long lasting flowers, they also send a message.
When you receive a red carnation bouquet, it means, "My heart aches for you" and when you receive white carnations the sender is saying: "I am still available."
For the most part, carnations express love, fascination, and distinction.
I wanted a bit of drama here and lots of detail in those 'feathered' beauties...

Wisteria are the jewels of the botanic world; easy to look after, very long lived, vigorous, and simply magnificent when in flower.
The usual Wisteria you find on front walls of English cottages is Wisteria sinensis, which must be 7-8yrs old before it will flower.
Also popularly called 'purple rain'?
Wisteria (also spelled Wistaria or Wisteria) is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae, that includes ten species of woody climbing vines native to the Eastern United States and to China, Korea, and Japan.
Some species are popular ornamental plants, especially in China and Japan.
A fun bit of info here:
Wisteria vines climb by twining their stems either clockwise or counterclockwise round any available support.
They can climb as high as 20 m above the ground and spread out 10 m laterally.
The world's largest known Wisteria vine is in Sierra Madre, California, measuring more than 1 acre (0.40 ha) in size and weighing 250 tons, planted in 1894 of the Chinese lavender variety!

WHERE ELSE but YORKSHIRE?
#AbFav_PHOTOSTORY
#AbFav_ROCKS_💎
Dry stone or loose stone walls are commonly used as field boundaries in the highlands, such as the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.
A dry-stone wall is a wall that is made up of stones skill-fully placed one on top of the other with no binding agent to hold them together.
The wall is held up by a special construction method and by its own weight, and the stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip.
Containing sheep in specific fields is the main reason for the existence of dry stone walls.
Also, they are a thing of beauty, they last much longer than 'wet' walls, and they're safer than fences when it comes to herding in wildlife.
Besides, what else is there to do with all those stones cluttering up the countryside?
The moors are bleak, the higher you go the less vegetation there is, nothing to stop the wind, wet walls would not stand a chance, but now the wind just ‘whistles’ through the stones!
Wishing you all a beautiful day and thank you for visiting, Magda, (*_*)

ALHAMBRA, GRANADA, SPAIN…
The Alhambra, the complete form of which was Calat Alhambra, and the Generalife were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
It ia a palace and fortress complex in Muslim Architecture.
The places open for public visits are divided into four areas: Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Partal and Generalife.
Portico and pool of the early 14th-century Partal...
HERE is: The portico, with its five arches, overlooks a large pool in the centre of the garden.
Behind the portico is the main room, located inside the tower known as Las Damas.
WELL WORTH A VISIT!!! Order your tickets before hand or you might not get in! It is extremely popular.
The access to the beautiful and exotic Nasrid Palaces is different from the rest of the monument, because it is strictly limited to the half- hour indicated on the ticket due the restrictions on maximum capacity in this area (300 people).
This is inside, Patio de los Arrayanes (Court of the Myrtles) and is also called the Patio de la Alberca (from Arabic "Birka" meaning pool).
Photographing is difficult because of the crowds...
But, if, like me, one of your virtues is 'patience' (NOT!)... people move on with their guides and staying behind a little could pay off, like it did for me. Don't be fooled by the emptiness! LOL.
Take care, be safe!

The Spanish love their glazed colourful tiles and use them on floors, on walls, inside and outside, made with great Artistry and creativity, they liven up the place and are part of the architecture.
These were 4 flights of stairs, a real eye-teaser.
Standing in front of it, it looked like a tall wall, I asked a model to go and sit on the first landing, free and comfortable, not posed.
I have it with all the steps, but the place was surrounded by palm trees, it was impossible to get a picture without shadow, this was over the midday= the least favourable moment to take a photograph, so I decided to go for a closer comp.

THORNWICK Bay...(pronounced Thornick... welcome to Yorkshire, lol)
Thornwick Bay derives its name from "Thor" the God of Thunder because of the roar of the breaking waves on the rocks during a North Easterly gale which pounds the magnificent cliffs.
In the winter when the winds are strong and the weather is bad, when the waves hit the rocks, foam and spray blows up the cliff and over the cafe, but thankfully most people come to visit in the Spring, Summer and Autumn months when the weather is much calmer, and people can sit on the cliff top and admire the fantastic scenery and watch the sun reflect off the brilliant white chalk cliffs which have been cleaned by the winter storms over thousands of years.
The stretch of water North of the Lighthouse was named 'the graveyard' by the skippers and crew of sailing vessels which once they had lost the safety of Bridlington Bay, and without the aids of navigation and weather forecasting which we now take for granted, were at the mercy of the angry weather.
Marine charts show hundreds of wrecks all within a few miles radius of Thornwick bay.
A great many people visit Thornwick Bay each year to enjoy wonderful cliff top walks observing the abundance of seabirds including Puffins, Guillemots and Kittiwakes etc.
Have a lovely day and thank you, as always, M, (*_*)

PURE JOY...
IGOR THE WORLD CHAMPION.
Once a horse won that title... it becomes invaluable and is used as a stud.
Igor had just sired a few mares and was feeeeeeeeeling GOOD...
(to sire is to inseminate.)
The Belgian horse, Belgian Heavy Horse, Flemish or Brabant is a horse breed that comes from the West-Brabantian region of Belgium.
They are one of the strongest of the heavy breeds.
The world's Largest Horse was a Belgian named Brooklyn Supreme, who weighed 3,200 pounds, and stood at 19.2 hands.
On average the Brabant will grow to be slightly over 1 ton or 2,000 pounds.
Colours normally are a blond with a brighter mane, or a sorrel/ chestnut colouring.
In history their main use was to work farms.
They are able to pull tremendous amounts of weight-up to over 4,500 pounds for a pair.
They also played an important role in the first World War, where quite a few perished.
I walked around and started to photograph, I discovered another blond stallion in an adjacent field and in order to get his whole head, with the velvet nose and pricked up ears all in, I had pushed through the fences and the top (danger!!!) ribbon... well I got the shot, but what a SHOCKING experience!
I straightened too soon and was electrocuted, in the neck, I called Paul, yelling: IS THE CAMERA GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT???
The horse got as much of a fright as I did, bolted and ran off.
Farmers are the same all over the world, they are only allowed a low voltage BUT... this was 240, my heart felt like I was 25 again. Bouboum.
I turned around into the 'safer' stables, obviously the nursery, since there were about 6 stables all with foals, that's where I captured those two lovelies.
The adventures of a photographer he, tee hee.
The Belgian horse is a much-loved gentle giant.
This large heavily muscled horse most likely descended from the heavy prehistoric horses and was indispensable as a workhorse in the Middle Ages when this horse was known as the Flanders (Flemish) Horse, now it is known as the Brabant.

Or SEMAFLORES? LOL
The name Iris is Greek and it means rainbow for its many colours. However, most irises are shades of blue or purple.
Lately I have seen them white, yellow and mix of yellow and white.
The majority of irises that we see today are hybrids of the originals.
The iris has been around for many centuries, and many artists have chosen to paint them.
There are several famous paintings of the flowers. From 1888 to 1890, Van Gogh painted at least four paintings of irises.
Monet painted "Iris" sometime between 1914 and 1917.
Not only is the iris a beautiful flower, but also they have several uses.
As a live plant they are used as a water purifier.
They are ingredients in some perfumes, homemade toothpaste, pottery and herbal medicines.
The stylised iris, fleur-de-lis, descends from the white iris which is native to Florence, Italy and which grew even in its city walls.
This white iris, displayed against a red background, became the symbol of Florence until the Medici family, to signal a change in political power, reversed the colours making the white one red and setting in motion a centuries-long breeding program to hybridise a red iris.
Catherine de Medici carried this symbol of Florence to Paris when she married the king of France where this most famous of irises acquired its nickname, fleur-de-lis.
The iris has been associated with France as Louis VII adopted it as a symbol in the 12th Century.
In Flowers'-language: Iris means faith; hope; wisdom and valour

Cotoneaster species are used as larval food plants by some Lepidoptera species including grey dagger, mottled umber, short-cloaked moth, winter moth and hawthorn moth.
The flowers attract bees and butterflies and the fruits are eaten by birds.
Although relatively few species are native here, in the UK and Ireland, Cotoneaster species are used, along with the related genus Pyracantha, as a valuable source of nectar when often the bees have little other forage in the June gap.
The red berries are also highly attractive to blackbirds and other thrushes.
These were still orange, it was early October, they get even brighter!

Lily of the Valley,
French: Muguet, lis des vallées
Dutch: Lelietjes van Dalen
Flemish: meiklokjes (Little BELLS OF MAY)
The flower is also known as 'Our Lady's tears' since, according to Christian legend; the lily of the valley came into being from Eve's tears after she was driven with Adam from the Garden of Eden.
According to another legend, Lilies of the Valley also sprang from the blood of Saint Leonard of Noblac during his battles with a dragon.
Other names include May Lily, May Bells, Lily Constancy, Ladder-to-Heaven, Male Lily and Muguet.
Lily of the Valley became the national flower of Finland in 1967.
The Norwegian municipality Lunner has a Lily of the Valley in its coat-of-arms.
It is also the official flowers of many fraternities and sororities.
... an erect low-growing perennial herb of the genus Convallaria (C. majalis) that has two large oblong lanceolate leaves and a raceme of fragrant nodding bell-shaped white flowers.
All parts of the Lily of the Valley are highly poisonous.
The first day of May in France and other European countries is La Fête du Travail (Labour Day). It is a holiday.

Love them or hate them, Parrot Tulips are Spring's grand (bulb) showcase, big and beautiful, they have flamboyant flowers with streaks, ruffles and frayed edges and all the colours of the rainbow.
Close-up portrait. Most unusual, these 'red' Rococo Parrot Tulips, flowers with twisted, irregularly fringed and curved petals. They are weird even a little 'alien'?
Are they 'monstrous beauty or beautiful monster'

Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops.
Similarly in Japan, the colour is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.
Phalaenopsis Orchid, known as the Moth Orchid, abbreviated Phal in the horticultural trade, is an orchid genus of approximately 60 species.
Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids.
It is native to southern China, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Queensland.
They bloom in their full glory for several weeks.
In the home, the flowers may last two to three months or even longer, here I noticed.

Wherever we go in the world, it is especially the sea that attracts us most.
We're always drawn to the harbour, not to admire the big luxury yachts, no, the fishing harbour, the working boats, the people, the different methods they use.
The netting depends obviously on the type of catch they fish for. The majority of rigged nets are made to order, allowing fishermen to have exactly the right net for their needs.
Here, in England and the North, the size of the mesh is often bigger than what we saw here in Spain.
I fell in love with this scene when I saw it!
The colours, aahh, everything!

This is the first part of the weather-lore rhyme:
Red sky at night; shepherd's delight,
Red sky in the morning; shepherd's warning...
The 'red sky at night' rhyme is more than an old wives' tale though and has some meteorological foundation - in England at least.
Sometimes the phrase involves sailors rather than shepherds - both have a more than usual interest in the weather!
The end of a beautiful day, saturated with fresh air, warm sun, visual joy and lots of good photography.
We had to drive fast from Padstow to get the sun in the right place, we were 'the original sunset-chasers', tee hee.
We made it in time, of course I have the 'by the second' disappearance of the sun into the sea, however it was the other beauty surrounding it that interested me most!
Like this afterglow, that panoply of stunning colours.
I hadn't bothered to bring my tripod, just found myself a spot to sit, rested my elbows on my knees and held my breath...
I hope you get as much pleasure out of them as I do, M, (*_*)

Spurn is a narrow sand tidal island[1] located off the tip of the coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England that reaches into the North Sea and forms the north bank of the mouth of the Humber Estuary.
It was a spit with a semi-permanent connection to the mainland, but a storm in 2013 made the road down to the end of Spurn impassable to vehicles at high tide.
The island is over 3 miles (5 kilometres) long, almost half the width of the estuary at that point, and as little as 50 yards (46 m) wide in places.
The southernmost tip is known as Spurn Head or Spurn Point and is the home to an RNLI lifeboat station and two disused lighthouses.
Over time, the whole spit, length intact, slips back – with the spit-head remaining on its glacial foundation.
This process has now been affected by the protection of the spit put in place during the Victorian era.
This protection halted the wash-over process and resulted in the spit being even more exposed due to the rest of the coast moving back 110 yards (100 m) since the 'protection' was constructed.
The now crumbling defences will not be replaced and the spit will continue to move westwards at a rate of 2.2 yards (2 m) per year, keeping pace with the coastal erosion further north.
SPURN POINT sea defences...
or what is sadly left of it...
We were there when it was still accessible!
After a job that took us around Hull, we decided to push through to Spurn-point.
Spurn is a very unique place in the British Islands.
It is a nature reserve.
Three and a half miles long and only fifty meters wide in places on the left side of the estuary of the river Humber.
There are a series of sea defence works built by the Victorians and maintained by the Ministry of defence, till they sold Spurn to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in the 1950s.
The defences are in a poor state, breaking down and crumbling, making Spurn a very fragile place wide open to the ravages of the North Sea.
It is a unique place, qua fauna and flora, very protected; there weren't many people on that Good Friday.
This is what is left of the sea defences on the North Sea side, eerie, tragic, but extremely photogenic...
The light was sweet.
Have A GREAT day and thank you for viewing, M, (*_*)

Exotic.
MAITAKE...mushroom...
Maitake is one of the major culinary mushrooms used in Japan, the others being shiitake, shimeji and enoki.
In 2009, a phase I/II human trial, conducted by Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center, showed Maitake could stimulate the immune systems of breast cancer patients!
Maitake is rich in minerals (such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium), various vitamins (B2, D2 and niacin), fibers and amino acids.
Grifola frondosa is a polypore mushroom that grows in clusters at the base of trees, particularly oaks.
The fungus is native to the northeastern part of Japan and North America, and is prized in traditional Chinese and Japanese herbology as a medicinal mushroom,
The Oyster mushroom, or Pleurotus ostreatus, both the Latin and common name refer to the shape of the fruiting body.
The Latin pleurotus (sideways) refers to the sideways-growth of the stem with respect to the cap while the Latin ostreatus (and the English common name, oyster) refers to the shape of the cap which resembles the bi-valve of the same name.
Many also believe that the name is fitting due to the flavour resemblance to oysters.
The pink colour will fade on cooking. In fact, cooked oyster mushrooms all look the same, regardless of the colour they started as.
Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them!
