FLORAL LANGUAGE in RED...

#AbFav_PHOTOSTORY

#AbFav_The_COLOUR_RED_💋

Red is the colour of seduction and desire, which is time-bound.

Hence, if you are planning to send red flowers to your soul mate, it is better to mix them up with white flowers so that you convey the right feeling, which is the desire of true and intense love.

With beauty, courage and heat as its symbolism, it's no surprise that a bouquet filled with rich, red blooms knows no restraint.

Red flowers represent the matter of the heart.

Red is the colour of blood, the sign of liveliness and the sign of life in you.

Hence, the matter of heart and life is regulated and represented by red flowers.

The red flowers say it all. From ‘I love you’ to ‘I can’t live without you,’ from ‘I am pissed’ to ‘I am proud of you!’

When you find yourself fumbling for the right words to describe the situation and when you can’t figure out what might be the right gift for your special occasion, always trust the red flowers to do their job.

Red blooms also represent strength and courage.

They exude energy and positive vibes.

They are just so varied, delightful!

Have a glorious day and thank you, M, (*_*)

There are 16 corbels in all, representing the months, elements and seasons.

Here you have the four seasons. In the four corners.

In architecture a corbel is a structural piece of stone, wood or metal jutting from a wall to carry a superincumbent weight, often very decorative.

These here in the Gothic Hall of the City Hall in Brugge, are likely to be Late Gothic corbels and all of which are different.

I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)

To redevelop the derelict Salford docks in Manchester, UK, between 1990 and 1991 a competition was launched and architects James Stirling Michael Wilford Associates was selected.

After the death of James Stirling in June 1992 Michael Wilford continued the project.

The project was completed in 2000 at a cost of £106 million.

Imperial War Museum North is a museum in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester, England.

One of five branches of the Imperial War Museum, it explores the impact of modern conflicts on people and society.

The museum occupies a site overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal on Trafford Wharf Road, Trafford Park.

The area is now home to the Lowry cultural centre and the MediaCityUK development, which stand opposite the museum at Salford Quays.

The museum building was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and opened in July 2002, receiving 470,000 visitors in its first year of opening.

It was recognised with awards or prize nominations for its architecture and is a prime example of Deconstructivist architecture.

Via another way, we arrive back in the church, the monks and nuns have left, the familiar scent and smoke of the incense lingers heavily in bands across the high vaulted ceiling, off-setting the rays of incoming sunlight, it is awesome!

I had nothing to do with this! I'd taken them out of the wrap, put them down, set lights up, and I came back to this!

A beautiful curved curl, to me, it looked like it was sculpted? Curling with desire?

Happy to see me? LOLPlants are essential to the balance of nature and in people's lives.

The photosynthesis, in which water and carbon dioxide are combined by the energy of light, conducted by land plants and algae is the ultimate source of energy and organic material in nearly all ecosystems.

Photosynthesis radically changed the composition of the early Earth's atmosphere, which as a result is now 21% oxygen.

Plants are the primary producers in most terrestrial ecosystems and form the basis of the food web in those ecosystems.

PLACES, where I find my PEACE...

The Canals of West-Flanders, Oostkerke/Damme/Brugge.

Where the trees dance on the rippling water, mirroring their majesty.

I am used to solitude, silence, peace.

A change is nice, yet it can become too much.

Sometimes I crave silence.

So we are off to Damme, now I must tell you, when I revisit my beloved Flanders, I have not really been unless I have not spent time here, our favourite spot.

A few miles from Brugge, you have the small town of Damme.

In the Middle-Ages, this used to be the harbour of Brugge, one of the wealthiest cities in the North.

Due to silt the North Sea is now about 25 miles out, but Damme retained it's reputation for good food and beer, wonderful old buildings full of the history of revolutionary Flanders.

Centuries later Napoleon saw the importance of the area and ordered a system of canals to be built.

I stood in the middle of one of the bridges, in Oostkerke, across those magnificent tree-lined canals.

A UNIQUE landscape that just goes on and on and on... A photographer's paradise!

Classified to the UNESCO Patrimonium.

Flanders.

The sun is pounding again, I look for shade to walk in.

This is the Boeveriestraat.

Have not been here for a very long time.

I remember walking along these typical houses, on my mother’s hand, from the station to the center of the city, where we would meet my grandmother.

You see the black border on the bottom?

Houses who had a garden would have flowers against them, and THATis the origin of the idea to paint and later photograph flowers against a black background!

Gently sprinkled with pollen...

These are a beautiful soft purple.

The waiting buds only just peeping out.

Summer was slowly leaving us in a flurry of colour.

Named for the shape of their leaves, like blades, gladioli – from the Latin word “gladius,” meaning sword – have a history that spans from Africa to the Mediterranean.

Symbolising strength and moral integrity, gladioli also represent infatuation, with a bouquet conveying to a recipient that they pierce the giver’s heart with passion. How romantic!

Purple is a colour intermediate between blue and red.

It is similar to violet, but unlike violet, which is a spectral colour with its own wavelength on the visible spectrum of light, purple is a composite colour made by combining red and blue.

According to surveys in Europe and the U.S., purple is the colour most often associated with royalty, magic, mystery, and piety.

When combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction.

Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops.

Similarly in Japan, the colour is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.

The deep, rich purple dye made from a sea snail called the spiny dye-murex became known as Tyrian purple.

The process of making the dye was long, difficult and expensive.

Thousands of the tiny snails had to be found, their shells cracked, the snail removed.

Mountains of empty shells have been found at the ancient sites of Sidon and Tyre.

The snails were left to soak, then a tiny gland was removed and the juice extracted and put in a basin, which was placed in the sunlight.

There a remarkable transformation took place.

In the sunlight the juice turned white, then yellow-green, then green, then violet, then a red which turned darker and darker.

The process had to be stopped at exactly the right time to obtain the desired colour, which could range from a bright crimson to a dark purple.

Then either wool, linen or silk would be dyed. The exact hue varied, but it was always rich, bright and lasting.

Purple, represented royally by this proud Anemone.

Fishing nets have been used widely in the past, including by stone age societies.

The oldest known fishing net is the net of Antrea, found with other fishing equipment in the Karelian town of Antrea.

The net was made from willow, and dates back to 8300 BC.

The remnants of another fishing net dates back to the late Mesolithic, and were found together with sinkers at the bottom of a former sea.

American Native Indians on the Columbia River wove seine nets from spruce root fibres or wild grass, again using stones as weights.

For floats they used sticks made of cedar which moved in a way which frightened the fish and helped keep them together.

With the help of large canoes, pre-European Maori deployed seine nets which could be over one thousand metres long.

The nets were woven from green flax, with stone weights and light wood or gourd floats, and could require hundreds of men to haul.

Fishing nets are well documented in antiquity.

They appear in Egyptian tomb paintings from 3000 BC.

In ancient Greek literature, Ovid makes many references to fishing nets, including the use of cork floats and lead weights.

Pictorial evidence of Roman fishing comes from mosaics which show nets.

In a parody of fishing, a type of gladiator called retiarius was armed with a trident and a cast net.

In Norse mythology the sea giantess Rán uses a fishing net to trap lost sailors.

References to fishing nets can also be found in the New Testament.

Jesus Christ was reputedly a master in the use of fishing nets.

Fishing nets have not evolved greatly, and many contemporary fishing nets would be recognised for what they are in Neolithic times.

I would have that on my wall... LOL

CHOCOLATE… by the KILO

These are BIG chunks of dark chocolate, with hazelnuts, with fruit, white chocolate, chocolate galore!

It looks like they smashed big slabs.

The aroma of chocolate comes out of many shops when walking the streets of Brugge.

TOOLS: It is now trendy to buy these tools, everything for the DIY-er: IN CHOCOLATE.

Looking like rusted tools.

But there you go. Gimmicky, fun, personally I am not overly keen on it.

Belgian chocolate is renowned, it is quality and tasty, more cacao and less fat.

Good for the skin, did you know?

A bit of dark chocolate every day!

A TRAY FULL OF CASANOVAS...

It is a well known fact that the best chocolates (we call them pralines) are made in Belgium, tee hee!

The fat content is lower and the cacao content is higher, that's why they are so extraordinarily yummy.

While I was making my choice, a tray of fresh Casanovas was brought in, yes they all have superb names, like Desiree, Irresistible, Merveilleux, Delice, Forever, mmmmm all very romantic...

Casanova: Pralinée with crisped rice, coated with white chocolate.

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fibre that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae.

The fibre is almost pure cellulose. Under natural conditions, the cotton bolls will increase the dispersal of the seeds.

Within 80–100 days after planting, the plant develops white blossoms, which change to a reddish colour.

The fertilised blossoms fall off after a few days and are replaced by small green triangular pods, called bolls, that mature after a period of 55–80 days.

During this period the seeds and their attached hairs develop within the boll, which increases considerably in size.

The seed hair, or cotton fibre, reaching a maximum length of about 6 cm (2.5 inches) in long-fibre varieties, is known as lint.

When ripe, the boll bursts into a white, fluffy ball...

The True "Wild" Roses…

The botanical term for wild rose is "species rose", which means just what it says — a species that occurs naturally, with no help from man — a true "wildflower."

There are over 100 of these worldwide, some native to North America, many from the Orient and Europe.

These true wild roses are all single with exactly five petals — never more, and almost all of them are pink, with a few whites and reds, and even fewer that range toward yellow. (By the way, there are now over 20,000 hybrids, with about 200 new ones every year.)

Pasture Rose, Prairie Rose, Wild Rose, Dog Rose, Eglantine, Sweetbriar, and Scotch Briar are just a few of the very common names for wild roses.

WILD ROSE… UNDER ATTACK…

Spotted this beauty but when I looked closer I saw all the movement of the furry caterpillars.

They were slowly eating this bush of gorgeous pink wild Roses.

The rose hip or rosehip, also called rose haw and rose hep, is the accessory fruit of the rose plant.

It is typically red to orange, but ranges from dark purple to black in some species.

Rose hips begin to form after successful pollination of flowers in spring or early summer, and ripen in late summer through autumn.

Rose hips are used for herbal teas, jam, jelly, syrup, rose hip soup, beverages, pies, bread, wine, and marmalade.

Leucospermum (Pincushion, Pincushion Protea) is a genus of about 50 species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, native to Zimbabwe and South Africa, where they occupy a variety of habitats, including scrub, forest, and mountain slopes.

They are evergreen shrubs (rarely small trees) growing to 0.5-5 m tall.

The leaves are spirally arranged, tough and leathery.

The flowers are produced in dense inflorescences, which have large numbers of prominent styles, which inspires the name.

I can absolutely see why this is called the 'PINCUSHION' PROTEA.

The national flower of South-Africa.

Die enige eg SUIKERBOSSIE (ZA).

Protea flowers normally remain closed, (with the style curved, and the stigma within the mass of tepals), until an insect, bird, or rodent disturbs the flower.

At that point, the flower snaps open, the style straightens and the stigma is held some distance above the bloom.

Love them or hate them, Parrot Tulips are Spring's grand (bulb) showcase, big and beautiful, they have flamboyant flowers with streaks, ruffles and frayed edges.

Have a glorious day and thank you, M, (*_*)

Was in Holland, studio and all for a big architectural job in Amsterdam.

An assistant asked if I'd have the time to take some portraits of her and her sister.

The girl also played the saxophone and had tentatively brought her instrument.

I didn't mind, so long as I could do some shots for myself...

Also brought the baby.

In an unplanned moment of pause, a blow on the sax to the surprise of the baby, where was this sound coming from?

Out of that shiny toy? LOL

Just had time to pick up my camera and take the photo... ALWAYS be ready?

An ongoing project on the importance of 'eyes', for a book.

Soul-mirrors.

Thanks for visiting, hope you had a great w-e, Magda (*_*)

PLACES, where I find my PEACE...

The Canals of West-Flanders, Oostkerke/Damme/Brugge...

Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)

Two Parrot Tulips, so frivole and consumed in each other, looks like a joyous outcry?

The deeply fringed and ruffled petals of the gorgeous parrot tulip will gradually open right out to form big, bowl-shaped flowers.

Although it is unknown who first brought the tulip to Northwestern Europe, the most widely accepted story is that it was Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq, an ambassador for Emperor Ferdinand I to Suleyman the Magnificent.

The greens of May... the greens never more fresh, it had rained the day before...

And yellows, great patches of yellow Coal-flower fields.

May is treating us with THE BEST!!!

Well I think May is the sweetest month, everything so fresh, and the foliage not yet dense, so it lets through the gorgeous light!

Just a few of the images I came home with, a flavour of the opulence with which I was surrounded, what a feast for all the senses.

The Golden Mean or Golden Section is a mathematical constant, a ratio that appears in nature and was discovered by Pythagoras in the 5th century B.C.E.

The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in visual arts namely painting, photography, design and across cultures and history, designers such as artists and architects, composers and poets have adopted the Golden Mean as a ratio that is pleasing to the human eye.

Rotation of plant leaves on a stalk follow the Phi (φ) ratio insuring that the same position is not used twice, affording optimal exposure of underlying leaves to sunlight.

In philosophy, especially that of Aristotle, the golden mean is the desirable middle between two extremes, one of excess and the other of deficiency.

For example courage, a virtue, if taken to excess would manifest as recklessness and if deficient as cowardice.

To the Greek mentality, it was an attribute of beauty.

I know the 'rules of composition'... and personally, once I knew them... I love to 'break' them... creatively that is...

Picked these on Yorkshire MOORS.

Last weeks grasses, well, not wanting to throw them away, I put them in some water, to my surprise, they flowered, well, as you can see, different stages.

Sadly they are gone now, the pollen not so good for Paul!!!

I am still fascinated by stark compositions... and I love (need) new challenges...

For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light? Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my blood? LOL.

Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them!

With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, M, (* _ *)

There are not that many green flowers to be found!

Leaves aplenty, but not blooms.

ARC DE TRIOMPHE. Molucella or Bells of Ireland.

These two stems of Irish Bells seemed to welcome, in the form of an ARCH of TRIUMPH, the three small red roses ...

Moluccella is a genus of annual and short-lived perennial plants native to Central + southwestern Asia and the Mediterranean.

They are tall, upright, branched plants to 1 meter or more with toothed leaves and small white fragrant flowers.

Whether Moluccella is actually a flower or variety of foliage is often open to debate.

In fact, Moluccellais a member of the mint family and has a unique perfume all of its own.

Bells of Ireland, a hardy annual with flowers that never fail to impress, blooms which are the most exquisite shade of lime green.

Since Victorian times, Bells of Ireland have been considered a symbol of good luck - the perfect flower to send to someone starting a new job, or moving to a new home.

Moluccella laevis (Bells-of-Ireland, Bells of Ireland, Molucca balmis, Shellflower, Shell flower)

The second: TIDDELY-OM-POM-POM... Green Trick ‘Temarisou’...

Bred by Hilverda kooij in Holland, and winner of countless awards is a stylish Dianthus barbatus called Green Trick ‘Temarisou’

First, this is not a true carnation at all (Dianthus caryophyllus) which I thought it was judging by the leaves and stems but rather, it is a Dianthus barbatus cultivar, or Sweet William.

But a Sweet William that looks more like a ball of moss?

As far a cut flower trends go, this amazing new variety is a terrific example of how plant breeders are focusing on new lifestyle flowers that meet the needs of today's new consumer.

Short, modern containers with dense mounds of spiky green is exactly what stylists and hip florists are looking for.

There IS a trend in EVERYTHING!

A SPECIAL BOND!

I love photographing horses, not the easiest to do, there are standards, but with the help of the breeders it usually becomes a very pleasant and exciting experience.

Here was a fortuitous moment, as a photographer, yes you have to focus on the main subject and there is MUCH to think about and concentrate on, but as a creative you stay aware of what is going on around you, and these 'off' images often become my favourite shots...

One of the horses I had photographed was taken back, so this was one of those 'in-between' moments...

This is the mother in the family that breeds horses, it is tough and yet rewarding.

They witness the birth and tend to the foals with love and yet when they lose one, they are quite stoic about it...

Such tenderness, closeness, emotion, just HAD to be captured.

I wish you all the very best and thank you for all your kind words, time, comments and faves.

Very much appreciated. M, (*_*)

... fresh Physalis in their husks. Both to eat and to photograph!

Physalis is characterised by the small orange fruit similar in size, shape and structure to a small tomato, but partly or fully enclosed in a large papery husk derived from the calyx.

The berry also goes by the names Golden Strawberry,Chinese Lantern and Cape gooseberry.

Not all Physalis species bear edible fruit. Select species are cultivated for their edible fruit, however; the typical Physalis fruit is similar to a firm tomato in texture, and like strawberries or pineapple in flavour, with a mild acidity.

Physalis fruit is a good source of vitamin C, beta-carotene, iron, calcium and trace amounts of B vitamins.

These fruits contain 18 kinds of amino acids.

These berries are also abundant in polysaccharides, compounds that may help fortify the immune system.

Plants are aggressive spreaders, and best kept out of the perennial border so they don't take over.

Also can be grown in tubs.

Small white flowers appear in midsummer, over a bushy mound of coarse green leaves.

Pods are green at first, but should be harvested as soon as the orange colour develops, the leaves stripped then stems hung upside down to dry in a warm dark room.

we were in Holland, and it was bitterly cold.

The wind was rushing over the flat meadows and tearing at my clothes and skin.

I walked along one of the many small canals, many were frozen along the grassy banks.

The rushing water was still half ice over the midday.

The banks had grasses and sticks encapsulated ice, made a wonderful spectacle.
