From the "about-which" plaque nearby:

The former Jewish Quarter was situated to the northwest of the actual place du Palais (of the Popes). In 1221, the Jewish community was transferred to the parish of Saint-Pierre, around the place Jerusalem (a place is an open space where a number of roads converge, one of several town squares within the city). this "quarter", a name also given to the ghetto in Venice, was closed off by three doors, the only one of which remaining is the (nearby) portal of the Calandre; the inhabitants were under the protection of the pope. The Revolution ended the time of the Quarter; and most of the houses have been torn down in the 19th Century. The Synagogue, called a School, comprised the temple and rooms useful to the life of the community: reunions, marriages, butcher, baker...

Rebuilt between 1765 and 1767 by (the architect) Franque and sumptuously decorated, it was totally burned down in 1845. It was immediately reconstructed by the care and efforts of the municipality to the plans of the architect J.A. Jeoffroy who, in a surprising design, created the interior as a neo-classical rotunda covered with a cupola.

The Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d'Avignon. It was built from 1234 (replacing an earlier wood bridge built during 1177-1185 and destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade). However, the stone arches proved unstable, and were prone to collapse when the river Rhône flooded. The bridge was abandoned during the middle 17th C.

The structure on the bridge (near center) is the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas d'Avignon.

Access to the bridge is by wood drawbridge, connecting to the gatehouse in the city wall.
