Het trambedrijf van Avignon is het jongste Franse trambedrijf. Op 19 oktober 2019 werd de 5,2 kilometer lange tramlijn in gebruik genomen. Het beginpunt aan de centrumzijde van de lijn ligt naast de stadsmuur die het historische centrum van de Provençaalse pausenstad omsluit. Avignon is sinds vele eeuwen de zetel van een aartsbisschop en diende ooit als ballingschapsoord voor de paus. Het centrum van de stad staat op de lijst met werelderfgoed van de UNESCO.
Met de korte tramlijn heeft Avignon er een nieuwe attractie bij. De tramlijn volgt het zuidelijke deel van de stadsomwalling om vervolgens af te buigen voor de verdere rit naar saint Chamand. Op de lijn doen tien korte Citadis-trams van Alstom dienst. Vier aanvullende exemplaren zijn besteld voor levering in 2023. In Frankrijk rijden zulke 24 meter lange trams alleen in Avignon en bij het minitrambedrijfje van Aubagne.

The bridge of Avignon was started in 1177. 920 metres long, it had 22 arches and measured 4 metres wide.This imposing edifice, that was called the marvel of the time, was built in only 8 years, taking until 1185.
Before the bridge, people crossed the Rhône in small boats, and this river that Man had not yet domesticated often made the crossing quite perilous.
Arles having lost its Roman bridge, that of Avignon became the only place between Lyon and the Mediterranean to cross the Rhône. The city attracted travelers, merchants and manufacturers and quickly developed thanks to the revenues generated by the tolls. Without doubt, it had also worked in Avignon's favor when the popes made the decision to settle there in the 14th century. *

The bridge across the Rhône in Avignon was built in the 12th century. Wars and floods repeatedly damaged the structure, which was rebuilt several times. Over the decades, the riverbed changed, and the arches collapsed one after the other. and today only four arches survive.

The Notre Dame des Doms d'Avignon - 12trh century church. Mary, mother of Jesus, stands in gold at the top of the bell tower. Standing below Jesus are two figures, one may be his mother or one of three other women named May said to be at the crucifixion. The figure to the right looks to be male so likely is "the disciple whom Jesus loved". In the center foreground is a statue of an angel. Her left wing blocks our view of her head..
This was such an amazing mural in Avignon. I love the way the colors of the mural mirror the walls surrounding it, which you can see all the way on the right, past the black column.
