The Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d'Avignon. It was built from 1234 (replacing an earlier wood bridge built during 1177-1185 and destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade). However, the stone arches proved unstable, and were prone to collapse when the river Rhône flooded. The bridge was abandoned during the middle 17th C.
The structure on the bridge (near center) is the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas d'Avignon.
Access to the bridge is by wood drawbridge, connecting to the gatehouse in the city wall.
