The Pont d'Avignon is the popular name for St. Bénezet Bridge, a 12th century Medieval bridge that used to connect Avignon with Villeneuve lès Avignon. It once had 22 arches that continued to collapse and be reconstructed over it's lifetime, however it was finally put out of use during the flood of 1668. Only 4 of the original arches survive.
The Palais des Papes, or Palace of the Popes is an impressive structure consisting of two primary buildings, the old palace and the new palace. It was constructed in the 14th century and over the next 600 years was subsequently occupied by 9 popes, antipapal forces, french revolutionaries, Napoleonic military men and even prisoners. It was finally vacated in 1906 when it became a national museum.
