I'm going a bit bonkers with work – there's another one of those hideous deadlines looming – so apologies if I'm a little on the quiet side round the Flickrverse at the moment.... not long to go now.... i hope!

On the bright side – given my ongoing obsession with Whistler's river nocturnes – I think ATZ may be the most Whistler-ish film I've yet found....

i was told this was an old WWII era bunker on the beaches of Aquinnah, MA

The last of my ATZ, sniff, too expensive now to do much polaroid!

working with ATZ film seems to present the biggest challenge to my original-image vs. photoshop sensibilities: ordinarily i try to scan polaroids to look as much like the actual pola as possible -- except for when it looks infinitely better having messed around with the levels or curves a bit in photoshop. usually those differences are fairly subtle, and since the scanner settings are in some ways arbitrary digital waypoints, i don't think too much about it.

but with ATZ, the originals are so non-contrasty & often very green, that minor tweaks can really fundamentally change what the image looks like. if i take this starting point & tweak the levels a bit, much more vibrant colors appear, usually in the green/cyan direction (see previous). if i click "autolevels" before trimming the white border off (which my scanner tends to scan pale blue), i get increased contrast plus the colors often change wildly, sometimes into deeper blues (like this one), often in the direction of more yellows, reds, and browns (i'm pretty sure i did that here).

this morning i made all three versions of this image, and then went with the least-manipulated one -- but tomorrow i might have a different reaction. i see no point in being a "purist" about scanned polas, the scan is always going to look & feel different than the original -- but not sure if i want to give myself SOME boundaries on the amount of manipulation? my mood about it varies from day to day...

for others who work with polaroids (or negatives, for that matter) -- how do you find yourself making these choices?

Susan is lovely. I took this during 'roid week, but I guess I'm too late to upload it. I think it's the best pola I've managed so far. I can't decide if I like this alone, or if I prefer it was a diptych (previous upload). You choose.

Berlin | 9. Juni 2010 | Polaroid

Went to FW for dinner last evening and did some roaming around areas we hadn't seen for a while and ran across this old ice cream shop sign. It looks to be still in business, but only had a couple of cars in the lot.
