me looking out of the window. it's raining all day.
oh! and by the way. this is my 100th Polaroid I uploaded on flickr! yeah.
frost melting off grass stems as the sun first hits it...
working with ATZ film seems to present the biggest challenge to my original-image vs. photoshop sensibilities: ordinarily i try to scan polaroids to look as much like the actual pola as possible -- except for when it looks infinitely better having messed around with the levels or curves a bit in photoshop. usually those differences are fairly subtle, and since the scanner settings are in some ways arbitrary digital waypoints, i don't think too much about it.
but with ATZ, the originals are so non-contrasty & often very green, that minor tweaks can really fundamentally change what the image looks like. if i take this starting point & tweak the levels a bit, much more vibrant colors appear, usually in the green/cyan direction (see previous). if i click "autolevels" before trimming the white border off (which my scanner tends to scan pale blue), i get increased contrast plus the colors often change wildly, sometimes into deeper blues (like this one), often in the direction of more yellows, reds, and browns (i'm pretty sure i did that here).
this morning i made all three versions of this image, and then went with the least-manipulated one -- but tomorrow i might have a different reaction. i see no point in being a "purist" about scanned polas, the scan is always going to look & feel different than the original -- but not sure if i want to give myself SOME boundaries on the amount of manipulation? my mood about it varies from day to day...
for others who work with polaroids (or negatives, for that matter) -- how do you find yourself making these choices?
Polaroid.
I'm in a Polaroid phase. trying to learn.
I love invitations to groups. love them! but I don't like those big or sparkly invites. so, as much as I love being invited, and love you for inviting me, I will delete them.
sorry.
Susan is lovely. I took this during 'roid week, but I guess I'm too late to upload it. I think it's the best pola I've managed so far. I can't decide if I like this alone, or if I prefer it was a diptych (previous upload). You choose.

Happy 'Roid Week, y'all! My plan for the week is to get my PZ shots together... and hopefully to do some fixes on some of the old decrepit ATZ shots without totally going Photoshop-crazy. Also, just opened a pack of 600, so some of that might make it up. I seem to have misplaced my Land Automatic 100 in the move..? Ugh.
Got to be honest, though, I'm finding it hard to get stoked about photography what with the baseball. I don't want to jinx anything, so let me just say that it's been good. Very good.
Coney Island Polaroid 2 of 10. I couldn't have directed this shot better. I really wish I'd had an opportunity to scan it sooner, though. It was just a tiny bit overexposed, but I'm glad you can still see the Wonder Wheel back there. I'm still amazed that of all the two random girls in the world to walk into the Midway at that point in time, these two were dressed so nicely. I love the girl on the right's dress.
In totally unrelated news, the next D&S photowalk is on November 12th. It's time for Nob Hill, which means time for the Tonga Room, which means time for Mik to whip out the fantastic pineapple dress. Because it's awesome. Meet at the fountain in Huntington Park. You should come.

First Glasgow Volvo B9TL/Wright Eclipse Gemini 37542 (MXZ 3349) is seen here approaching the Barras on service 61 (Sandyhills-Summerston). It was new to the fleet in September 2008 as SF58 ATZ.

I'm going a bit bonkers with work – there's another one of those hideous deadlines looming – so apologies if I'm a little on the quiet side round the Flickrverse at the moment.... not long to go now.... i hope!
On the bright side – given my ongoing obsession with Whistler's river nocturnes – I think ATZ may be the most Whistler-ish film I've yet found....
Went to FW for dinner last evening and did some roaming around areas we hadn't seen for a while and ran across this old ice cream shop sign. It looks to be still in business, but only had a couple of cars in the lot.
