The blue-gray eye. and the dark chocolate hind wing accented with white splotches are good field marks to help identify this Fritillary species.

Legend says that Atlantis city was built by Poseidon, god of sea when he fell in love with a mortal woman Cleito. He made this city on top of a nearby hill and named it Atlantis. It is believed that he walked through these islands until he reached the biggest of them all- Atlantis and found it to be inhabited by people more beautiful and intelligent than rest of the world. It is here he first saw his future wife and fell in love with her.

This is the ventral view of the Atlantis Fritillary also posted this evening. The chocolate colour of the disc and marginal wing bands help to identify this species more than an examination of the patterns on the dorsal side.

If Santorini turns out to be the lost Atlantis, then I don't want to hear or know. I prefer to keep the mystery.

The dorsal view. Some of the Fritillaries look alike in the patterns seen on the dorsal side of the wings, and can be difficult to decipher. That is why it can be important to catch the ventral view which is more diagnostic.
I posted the ventral view of this Fritillary as well.

The chimney belongs to an old tomatoes factory, which is currently a museum, in Vlychada Santorini. The marvelous accompanied sculptures are nature’s creations (volcano, wind, sea) and are decorating the whole Vlychada beach. The blue sky’s manipulation enchances the impression of an underwater image-Atlantis…

The Atlantis fritillary, is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae of North America. It is from the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador to northern British Columbia, across the northern United States south as far as Colorado and West Virginia.It resides as far north as James Bay. The species is listed as endangered in Connecticut. (Wikipedia)

Atlantis is off to the South if I having my bearings right. We didn't go there I guess they want to charge you simply to have the privilege of being on their property. I even debated on cutting it out of the image but I feel like it gives a bit of scale to the image.
