In November 2017, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) held its second country dialogue on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Geita, Tanzania.
The dialogue followed months of preparatory work with Tanzanian partners HakiMadani and MTL Consulting.
Participants spent two days visiting four-small-scale mines in Geita, one of Tanzania's main gold-producing regions. This was followed by two days in workshops discussing how to make ASM in Tanzania more sustainable.

Small-scale miner taking a work break (Natural resource extraction)
Miner taking a break from work at a tunnel owned by Datu Legel Sakam Small-Scale Mining Association registered in South Cotabato, a province in southern Philippines that has established best practices in the governance of the small-scale mining sector. PH-EITI has been expanded to include pilot reporting in small-scale mining, focusing on South Cotabato case, to present to the public what the small-scale mining sector has done and is doing and their contribution to the local government and communities, which is hoped to promote openness and trust among stakeholders.
