In November 2017, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) held its second country dialogue on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Geita, Tanzania.

 

The dialogue followed months of preparatory work with Tanzanian partners HakiMadani and MTL Consulting.

 

Participants spent two days visiting four-small-scale mines in Geita, one of Tanzania's main gold-producing regions. This was followed by two days in workshops discussing how to make ASM in Tanzania more sustainable.

 

Around 25 women miners attended the dialogue event in Geita.

Winners of the ASMS Hackathon competition recently pitched their ideas to the City of Mobile - Government Mayor and other city & business leaders!

The Hackathon event included a one-day challenge for students to engage in real-world, creative problem solving while also learning from local technology professionals. Congratulations to the juniors from ASMS and 8th graders from Elberta and Foley Middle schools! Their winning projects included a job finder site for young adults in Mobile and an environmental impact browser plug in.

Site visits were followed by a two-day workshop designed to draw from field experiences and research and set priorities. Engineer David Mulabwa is the head of small-scale mining at Tanzania's ministry of mines.
