In November 2017, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) held its second country dialogue on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Geita, Tanzania.
The dialogue followed months of preparatory work with Tanzanian partners HakiMadani and MTL Consulting.
Participants spent two days visiting four-small-scale mines in Geita, one of Tanzania's main gold-producing regions. This was followed by two days in workshops discussing how to make ASM in Tanzania more sustainable.
Participants visited the Msisi gold mine, which is run by the local cooperative in Rwamgasa. Cooperatives are also known as SACCOS.

Today I went to the bar and met a beautiful connoisseur. Her appearance was quite eye-catching with her dress, so beautiful. I immediately started talking again and she told me she was a freelance actress and photo model. There's no reason why she shouldn't be that beautiful. I also brought my camera with me so I asked her permission to take a photo of her as a souvenir. Luckily she agreed!

Here, Jesper Jonsson, from COWI, presents the preliminary findings of research on upgrading ASM businesses in Africa. The project is a collaboration of IIED, CIFOR and COWI.
