Recently, I heard a couple of people close to me ask why I was so dark? And if I was ok because my work reflected a sad-er existence, as opposed to my naturally brighter personality. This got me wondering about why exactly I do choose to create darker works, and if that reflects a part of myself.

-

I have always found photography is my sweet escape from only seeing the world in bright, happy colours. I feel the freedom to play with darker concepts, some of which are a deeper part of me, some being expressions of a fictional ideology. 💜

-

So if I were to be asked why I create such dark imagery again, I would feel more confident in answering, I would say:

1) Because there is beauty in darkness, truly.

2) Everybody has a sense of sadness that forms itself as a darkness, we can all feel connected in that.

3) Life isn't always bright, and it's important to openly talk about our sadness.

4) Because I can explore concepts that mean something to me (and hopefully others!)

5) I have a voice, one that is responsible for helping people. I hope my art can heal in some way.

-

How is darkness a part of your life? Is it something you embrace, nestle comfortably inside or choose to ignore? However you choose to see your darkness, know that you're not alone in that, and your choices are yours to make.

Was the late Neil Armstrong, whose footprint remains intact on the windless moon, happier than the nameless hunter-gatherer who 32,000 years ago left her handprint on a wall in Chauvet Cave? If not what was the point of developing, agriculture, cities, writing, coinage, empires, science and Industry?

Bahar, mevsimlerin şarabı.

Anlatırken sevdasını,

Kimler kimler sarhoş oldu..

Baharın kokusu,

Bir kelebek dokunuşu.

Çabuk geçermiş ömrü,

When people ask "what is black and white and red all over?" they often are referring to those old riddles about newspapers and embarrassed zebras. In the world of Lepidoptera, however, they can only mean the aptly named Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly. A striking, but common insect species of North America, the zebra swallowtail features a very distinctive bold black and white striped wing pattern highlighted by brilliant red median stripes.

In warmer climates, such as Florida and the Deep South, three broods of zebra swallowtails, scientifically described as Eurytides marcellus, are completed per year. On the northern edge of its range, however, two reproductive cycles are the norm. Adults that emerge during the spring are usually smaller, paler, and have shorter tails than later broods, and summer and autumn cohorts are progressively larger and darker. Yet, no matter what their appearance, zebra swallowtails can be distinguished from other swallowtail butterfly species in flight by their characteristic close-to-the-ground forays, very direct flight paths, and rapid wing beats.

As you know I was out last night with an old mate Daisy and we were chatting about what's happened in our life since we last met a few months ago. Of course my journey figured a lot as did her relationship that is going really well for her. I am so pleased she is happy again.

Anyway I asked if I had got my legs out while doing these photos. Seems like she knows me all to well lol.

So here is the not so innocent bride :-)

I had to ask what this was, Ironically I also photographed this same tree in bloom. I believe this is the fruit/seed that is left after the bloom. Apparently they are edible. My only quibble with this is that they were in two's I wish there had been clusters of three.

Hey guys,

Some days ago a friend called me and asked me to dance two short simple chair dance performances.

Although my doctor advised me against doing this, I simply couldn't resist. So I did it, because I miss you, boys...

This photo was taken in my dressing room. As you can see, there is even a bed in it, and it looks a little messy at the moment.

One day everything will go back to normal.

I'm just addicted to you boys!! 😍

With love,

I asked to the driver of my guesthouse to drive me in the surrounding countryside early in the morning. It was not harvest season but some ricefields are not the same kind and could be harvested earlier like this one. In such situation it's nice to have a guide who could ask people if they don't mide I take picture dureing maybe 20 minutes. My Khmer language skills were very limited so eventhough I could ask myself, a guide is very helpfull to explain people what is my goal and the way I am allowed to act. Usually I prefer to be alone but sometimes I like to change my way.

All I asked for was pizza...

Subject: The depicted plant is a specimen of Tanacetum parthenium, a.k.a. Feverfew. This is a somewhat infesting weed, but it is also an aromatic herb with a characteristic bitter taste. It was believed to be a remedy against fever and gynecological diseases. Maresina is its vernacular name used in Valdagno (Vicenza province - Italy) and surroundings: there, this herb is used to prepare a dish called fritola con la maresina, which is a batter made with flour and cooked rice, then deep-fried in form of pancake. This photo was shot for an article (Vie Del Gusto, June-July 2014 issue). The portrayed plant is mine: lucky that I purchased it at a fair, because the review called me a day asking for some images of Feverfew to be sent overnight. The dew you see is artificial, to give an appealing effect. From the same set watch also The Frying-Pan Lady.

Someone asked me if I thought the shelduck was lonely since it was one of a kind. I submit exhibit A. The shelduck is right in the middle of the crowd of birds going after cracked corn on the ground. Lots of mallards, wood ducks, domestic ducks and feral pigeons keeping company.

Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos)

Mixed group of Domestic Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus)

As a teenage boy I was always fascinated by the Crockton line change. I guess it was the unknown new place to see. When my dad would ask my opinion. It's the place I wanted to go. It was a lot of work to get into. But a pretty cool area.

Mike asked me of my new 100mm macro lens. Surprise, it's a flower. What fun this new view on the world is and so much this one has to learn about making the most if it.

I wish you all a happy day. Thanks for your visit xx

We will exchange some words, even if we don't speak the same language. I will make you a smile with my heart, you will do as much. I thank you with my eyes and with a nod of the head"

Me: "thank you wise man, your wisdom made my day".

Remember this? The Princes' Gate

Ha! Ha! Of course you don’t. On the off chance you do, you my friend, need to get a real life!

Anyway, I had posted that shot up here on the ol’ Flickr a while back. It was winter and after dropping my son Joseph off in the Big Smoke (Toronto), I stopped off at the former CNE site, which is close by to where he lives. I froze my whatsits off whilst capturing the image on a cold night. Well, lo and behold, a number of months later, I get a Flickrmail from a media company in the city, requesting my permission to use the image in a mural that was to be created on the premises of the former CITY-TV building on Queen St. West (now Bell Media). Additionally, they were offering financial compensation. Well, I consulted my team of lawyers (”…all Harvard men”), checked with the accountants to see if this would push me over into a higher tax bracket (two movie references, if you’re counting) and finally asked the CFO for her opinion… “Hell ya man! Go for it! (…or something like that)” So, we fired off invoice number #1385 and waited.

A few weeks later the mural was done. So, gathering the clan for a viewing, we loaded up the Studebaker, headed off for the city with a hoop ‘n a holler, even enjoying a meal on the lavish stipend that was forked out. I snapped a couple of photos for posterity.

My fame in perpetuity… well, at least until they paint it over for a new mural, or rip the building down for expensive condos, or some punks come along with their spray cans and…

Shot a few weeks back. It was a cold evening and the ground was either covered in ice or frost. I was extremely careful when walking around.

I have posted shots from almost this angle before, and some comments have been on the lighted gate you see in red. I have tried to tone it a bit down during processing.

Thanks for stopping by.
