"The Continents", four monumental allegories by Daniel Chester French (best known for the Lincoln Memorial), grace the front of the old US Customs House. (Spoiler alert: America comes out on top.) Serene Asia bears an opium poppy. A statuette of the Buddha sits on her lap, while the light of Christianity is rising behind her. A kowtowing peasant lies at her feet, which rest on a footstool of human skulls; a bound slave stoops behind him. Her totem animal is the tiger.
I wanted to get pictures of Europe and Africa too this time, but access to the right side of the building was blocked by construction. Another time!
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (commonly known as Sri Lanka is a country off the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent. An island nation in South Asia, it was until 1972 known as Ceylon. Sri Lanka is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Mannar, the Palk Strait and lies in the vicinity of India and Maldives.
Sri Lanka is a republic and a unitary state which is governed by a semi-presidential system with its official seat of government in Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte, the capital.
As a result of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia. It has also been a center of the Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times and is one of the few remaining abodes of Buddhism in South Asia along with Ladakh, Bhutan and the Chittagong hill tracts The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population; Tamils, who are concentrated in the north and east of the island, form the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the aboriginal Vedda people.
The country is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon, the latter which is native to the country.The natural beauty Sri Lanka has led to the title The Pearl of the Indian Ocean, it is full of lush tropical forests, white beaches and diverse landscape throughout along with a rich biodiversity. The country lays claim to a long and colorful history of over three thousand years, having one of the longest documented histories in the world. Sri Lanka's rich culture can be attributed to the many different communities in the island. Sri Lanka is a founding member state of SAARC and a member United Nations, Commonwealth of Nations, G77 and Non-Aligned Movement.

Door de gunstige ligging op het pad van de grote zeeroutes tussen West-Azië en Zuidoost-Azië is Sri Lanka van oudsher een strategische marinebasis en een centrum van boeddhistische religie en cultuur van de oudheid. Tegenwoordig is het land een multi-religieuze en multi-etnische natie, waar bijna een derde van de bevolking andere religies dan het boeddhisme aanhangt, met name het hindoeïsme, christendom en islam. De Singalese gemeenschap vormt de meerderheid van de bevolking, met de Tamils als grootste etnische minderheid, geconcentreerd in het noorden en oosten van het eiland. Andere gemeenschappen omvatten de islamitische Moren en Maleisiërs en de Burghers.
Sri Lanka staat bekend vanwege de productie en export van thee, koffie, rubber en kokosnoten en heeft een progressieve en moderne industriële economie en het hoogste inkomen per hoofd van de bevolking in Zuid-Azië. Na meer dan tweeduizend jaar van heerschappij door plaatselijke koninkrijken, werden delen van Sri Lanka in het begin van de 16e eeuw gekoloniseerd door Portugal en Nederland, alvorens het gehele land in 1815 onder het bestuur van het Britse Rijk kwam. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog diende Sri Lanka als een belangrijke basis voor de geallieerde troepen in de strijd tegen het Japanse Keizerrijk. Aan het begin van de 20e eeuw ontstond een nationalistische politieke beweging, met als doel het verkrijgen van politieke onafhankelijkheid, die uiteindelijk in 1948 door de Britten werd verleend na vreedzame onderhandelingen.
