As the first full working week of the New Year gets underway, it's really good to know that by the weekend (in the northern hemisphere), the increasing amount of daylight should actually be noticeable!
The sun will be setting almost half an hour later than it did at the solstice of 21 December. The mornings however, take a little longer before they become noticeably lighter with the sun rising just seven minutes earlier.
The grain mill, built in French style in 1802 by by Lord Joseph Chavigny de la Chevrotiere, is now used as an exhibition hall, on the Chemin du Roy.
The Chemin du Roy or King's Highway is a historic road along the Saint Lawrence river built 1731-37, connecting communities between Quebec City and Montreal.
As we entered the Keukenhof gardens, we came upon a 2 ducks waddling through one of the flower beds. I quickly captured the motion of the duck as he scuttled away.
As darkness envelops the heart of a farm place, a lone cat sits near the edge of the grass near the barn hoping to catch an unwary mouse for a late snack. Nearby in the barn, a sheep lies safely tucked behind a gate that limits its life experiences. Night settles like dark dew on a quiet scene as the noises of the day take a rest as well.
Growing up as an inquisitive lad, I often asked my mother to tell me what it was like to live without electricity. Among all the tales she would tell me, her greatest appreciation for modernization later in her life was centered on two items: one, indoor toilets and two, the ability to switch on lights when it turned dark.
Younger generations today have little comprehension of the added difficulties life without electricity provided, especially for those of us on the farm. Farmers had to time their livestock chores, including milking, around the sun’s schedule. And, it was no picnic to feed hungry, snuffling pigs in the dark who were willing to knock you off your feet in their crowding eagerness to get at the feed you were carrying.
Even after we got elementary electricity, normal chores took on an eerie quality when done in the near dark. I well remember times of scooping ground corn into five gallon buckets and walking through the barn, out the silo room door and stepping into the darkness to find dark, impatient shadows waiting for me to dump the feed into long wooden troughs.
As a teenager, it wasn’t as bad as simple maturity allowed a more reasoned appreciation of the dark. But when a farm kid is in their single digits, night time activity took on a more sinister mood. Quick moving dark figures that if seen in the light were only cows appeared a lot more ominous when the nearest light pole holding up a dim bulb was 30 yards away and spread little light.
The mere hoot of an owl or the bark of a neighbor’s dog across the dark night air stirred momentary fear. My greatest apprehension was to be the last sibling done with his chores and to hear the distant house door slam shut and to be left all alone.
When I recently recounted those distant childhood fears to my longtime nightly companion she said she now understands why I often leave a light on at night when I go to bed.

As the USR consolidated its disjointed military in 1990, Zuritanian army officers discovered that most of their new countrymen had little experience with armored warfare. The Brohemian cavalry continue to insist on horseback patrols, and the Monsar officers were found huddled in a back room muttering something about SPAAGs. The Zuritanians quickly realized they would need a great number of additional tanks to equip future armored divisions. The Leopard 2A4 was showing its age, and the 2A6, while well-protected, had proven too expensive to properly deploy. The decision was made, after much roasting from a visiting South Yafrani officer, to begin work on a brand-new tank.
The 3A1 has similar speed to the Leopards, and like the Leopards incorporates blow-out panels to protect the crew from an ammunition cook-off. Its gun uses the same 120mm ammunition as the Leopards, but is an improved design with better performance. Optics are a downgrade, and its armor sits between the 2A4 and 2A6 in thickness. ERA tiles or infrared dazzlers are expected to improve the 3A1's capabilities, if needed.
The tank uses a gas turbine engine, which produces a loud and distinctive whistle and guzzles fuel like no tomorrow. Despite the size of the turret, some less than ergonomic choices have left the crew without much elbow room. Their gear, extra supplies, boombox, and a water cooler are all stored on a bustle rack behind the turret.
My turret design came from this suspiciously cheap Chinese knockoff Abrams. I suspect it's a fan moc that they stole the pictures from, but I can't seem to find the original to give proper credit. Ripperoni. (Amusingly, all the minifigs in this kit look to have "bad-guy" faces.) I guess the model actually exists though...

As easy as it might seem, we needed 3 days to get these shots right. First day scouting the area. Second day waking up well before sunrise to find the mountains hidden by clouds. Fortunately, the third day finally paid off.

For more than two decades, the Port of Miami, known as the "Cruise Capital of the World", has been the number one cruise passenger port in the world. It accommodates some of the world's largest cruise ships and operations, and is the busiest port in both passenger traffic and cruise lines.
Metropolitan Miami is the major tourism hub in the American South, number two in the U.S. after New York City and number 13 in the world, including the popular destination of Miami Beach.

In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang (also, yin-yang or yin yang) describes how apparently opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Many tangible dualities (such as light and dark, fire and water, and male and female) are thought of as physical manifestations of the duality of yin and yang. This duality lies at the origins of many branches of classical Chinese science and philosophy, as well as being a primary guideline of traditional Chinese medicine, and a central principle of different forms of Chinese martial arts and exercise, such as baguazhang, taijiquan (t'ai chi), and qigong (Chi Kung), as well as in the pages of the I Ching written in 1,000 BC and before.
Yin and yang can be thought of as complementary (rather than opposing) forces that interact to form a dynamic system in which the whole is greater than the assembled parts. Everything has both yin and yang aspects, (for instance shadow cannot exist without light). Either of the two major aspects may manifest more strongly in a particular object, depending on the criterion of the observation. The yin yang shows a balance between two opposites with a little bit in each.
In Daoist metaphysics, distinctions between good and bad, along with other dichotomous moral judgments, are perceptual, not real; so, the duality of yin and yang is an indivisible whole. In the ethics of Confucianism on the other hand, most notably in the philosophy of Dong Zhongshu (c. 2nd century BC), a moral dimension is attached to the idea of yin and yang.

By measuring starlight - specifically, the color and brightness - astronomers have determined that our Milky Way has about 100 billion stars in its system. Using the Milky Way as a model, astronomers have multiplied the number of stars in a typical galaxy (100 billion) by the number of galaxies in the known universe (2 trillion). The result is an absolutely astounding number of approximately 200 billion trillion stars in our known universe. Given that the earth’s star (the sun) has eight planets revolving around it, one of which has humans on it. Is it reasonable to believe that human beings here on the planet earth are the only beings in existence?

As with many birds the male is often very striking and the female not as much but if you really look at the females they can also be beautiful this female Rose-breasted Grosbeak is so striking.
Thanks as ever for all the comments and the suggestions on the shoes to match this French Connection dress. With my coat purchase the other day i think i've blown my monthly clothes budget !!
I do own some peep toe nude colour heels though so i will try and get some pics with them this weekend. I bought them ages ago and just haven't found a dress to match them. But i do love these heels i'm wearing, well for about an hour and then they turn into 'killer heels' and my feet then hurt like hell! Suffering for your art i think they call it!
As it now stands, the Pentre Ifan Dolmen is a collection of seven principal stones. The largest is the huge capstone, 5 m (16 ft) long, 2.4 m (7.9 ft) wide and 0.9 m (3.0 ft) thick. It is estimated to weigh 16 tonnes and rests on the tips of three other stones, some 2.5 m (8.2 ft) off the ground. There are six upright stones, three of which support the capstone. Of the remaining three, two portal stones form an entrance and the third, at an angle, appears to block the doorway.
As the clouds cover up the sun, EJE SD38-2 661 switches its final industry on CN's Addison branch. This is a rarely documented line (well, this branchline) so it's worth getting photos on this trackage, considering how close I live from this location.
As autumn comes upon the forest, it is the beginning of the end for the leaves. While flush with color and life now, the ultimate reality is that shortly thereafter, they'll become brown and dead. And so fall foliage is the leaves' swan song.
On the right, Lower South Falls feels like a billowing curtain of water that is lowering in flow too compared to earlier in the year and so its time is coming to an end too. I suppose a winter wonderland is coming soon, but let's appreciate the scene while it's still around.
