This was a grain storage facility for Budweiser back in the day. I caught it just as a storm was moving in, and loved the silhouette. I also really liked the reflection of sunlight in the windows.
As Summer turns to Autumn our Summer visitors prepare for a long flight.
British swallows spend their winter in South Africa: they travel through western France, across the Pyrenees, down eastern Spain into Morocco, and across the Sahara. Some birds follow the west coast of Africa avoiding the Sahara.
Migrating swallows cover 200 miles a day, mainly during daylight, at speeds of 17-22 miles per hour. The maximum flight speed is 35 mph.

Commonly known as moth orchids, is a genus of about seventy species of orchids in the family orchid. Orchids in this genus are monopodial epiphytes or lithophytes with long, coarse roots, short, leafy stems and long-lasting, flat flowers arranged in a flowering stem that often branches near the end. Orchids in this genus are native to India, China, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia with the majority in Indonesia and the Philippines. A few to many, small to large, long-lasting, flat, often fragrant flowers are arranged on erect to hanging racemes or panicles. The sepals and petals are free from and spread widely apart from each other. The lateral sepals are usually larger than the dorsal sepal and the petals much wider than the sepals. The labellum is joined stiffly to the column and has three lobes. The side lobes are erect and more or less parallel to each other and the middle lobe sometimes has a pair of appendages or antennae. As we walked across a small bridge at Hall Memorial Park, we spotted this Crow. He was walking back and forth on the bridge as he grappled with a piece of food. Now you know how this works, you never miss an opportunity for an up close and personal picture. We were not sure what he was having for lunch, but it made for an interesting image.
As spring warms up and the ice on many urban ponds beginning to melt, the Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) will again be observed feeding on the ice surface of these ponds in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

As is often the case it's worth looking behind you.....I was set up on another composition and happened to turn round. From my angle these 2 birches seemed to intertwine as if they were performing in front of a rather straight and stiff audience! Despite the lovely frosty conditions at the time, this was the first image of the day and the only decent one I made - funny how sometimes you just don't see things despite beautiful conditions!

As I tested slower shutter speeds to see the rain’s effect, an immature White-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) landed and took off from the Joe Pye (Eutrochium purpureum) blooms.
I like to shoot action photos at 1/2000, at least, for clarity, and deal with ISO later if I can. This frame followed the one in the first comment by less than a second, I think.

As we slide deeper into winter - technically still autumn but I know winter when I see it and feel it - photo ops with birds are limited. I haven't made a list, but a good guess would be less than two dozen species may put in an appearance... and half of those are late migrants heading farther south. Here's a year-round resident, though. The Sharp-tailed Grouse thrives in the mixed-grass prairie and can be found in both the river valleys and uplands. Note the feathered feet, an adaptation that must help it get through the deep cold of January and February.

As a photographer, I frequently try to find the most pristine scenes with no signs of human intervention.
But even in relatively remote locations, you sometimes just have to accept that you weren't the first person to have walked the highest sand ridge today...
As the heavens prepare for an imminent downpour, nature paints a breathtaking scene in the mountains of Tuscany.
Italy experiences a period of intense rainfall as dark clouds dominate the sky. The relentless downpour transforms the landscape, turning streets into temporary rivers and fields into saturated patches of earth. People navigate through the rain, seeking shelter and utilizing umbrellas and raincoats to stay dry. The heavy rainfall showcases the power and unpredictability of nature, reminding us of our vulnerability in the face of natural forces.
More snow has arrived up North and more is forecast for here, so I might as well post more snow pictures. This one from the beginning of January.
I was about to leave this spot when the lamp came on, so I had to take picture.

But as autumn approaches, certain influences both inside and outside the plant cause the chlorophylls to be replaced at a slower rate than they are being used up. During this period, with the total supply of chlorophylls gradually dwindling, the "masking" effect slowly fades away. Then other pigments that have been present (along with the chlorophylls) in the cells all during the leaf's life begin to show through. These are carotenoids they give us colorations of yellow, brown, orange, and the many hues in between.
The reds, the purples, and their blended combinations that decorate autumn foliage come from another group of pigments in the cells called anthocyanins. These pigments are not present in the leaf throughout the growing season as are the carotenoids. They develop in late summer in the sap of the cells of the leaf, and this development is the result of complex interactions of many influences - both inside-and outside the plant. Their formation depends on the breakdown of sugars in the presence of bright light as the level of a certain chemical (phosphate) in the leaf is reduced.
But in the fall, phosphate, along with the other chemicals and nutrients, moves out of the leaf into the stem of the plant. When this happens, the sugar-breakdown process changes, leading to the production of anthocyanin pigments. The brighter the light during this period, the greater the production of anthocyanins and the more brilliant the resulting color display that we see. When the days of autumn are bright and cool, and the nights are chilly but not freezing, the brightest colorations usually develop.
As usual the spring comes with a little color and warmth here in the north. The stillness turns into storm and back. Just an ordinary spring.

As 2022 draws to a close, I am looking forward to turning the page on this year, which has been a difficult one for me, and starting the new chapter that is 2023.
There are a few lines from a Josh Groban song called "Thankful", that I have always loved:

Pouring rain here so going through archives
As he got more used to me, the Scottish Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) relaxed and even started falling asleep. But I've dallied long enough, it's time to get moving or we'll never get the climbs done!
As much as I adore the liquid element, I reside at a place where it is is considered a rather scarce commodity and can hardly be located ... Thank God, at a distance of half an hour drive there lies the beautiful river of Nestos, whose flow is surrounded by amazing Green Nature and bridges, lots of bridges !!!
I love using my tripod and my ND (Neutral Density) filters over my lenses ... Their combined use enhances considerably the appropriate shutter speed for a balanced exposure, thus blurring water's flow and creating beautiful sharp images .... Environmental colors remain unaltered ...
I definitely suggest them for extensive use over around blue hours landscape photography ...
NIKON D90 DSLR with Nikon Nikkor 18 - 55 lens, Manual Mode, shutter speed 1 s, ISO 125, f 13, focal length 18mm, use of HOYA ND X 2 filter on top of which a HOYA ND X 8 filter was used, white balance set to cloudy weather , center weighted average metering mode, HDR made by only one original RAW shot, flash didn't go off, use of tripod ...
B&P 3886 was the trailing engine on RISI, as the train came into Bradford they radioed the St Albans Dispatcher and told him they have been having trouble keeping 3886 running and is currently shut down. Long story short the crew swapped out the whole power set with the SIRI that was just around the corner waiting to do the crew swap. 3 hours later we finally see SIRI with an Isolated 3886 in the lead starting to head south in sweet light.
As the new year starts its pace we have some hopes, dreams and wishes. It's always a new beginning. Human's wish of happiness lives forever.
Here's the photo of the first minutes of the new day. One of the best days of recent summer that we spent on the shores of Baikal lake in Siberia.
