“LEAD ME INTO TEMPTATION”

Matt McCormick samples from the fabric of his surroundings into vignettes of contemporary life. McCormick splits and recombines mundane snippets from highway scenes, billboard advertising, and from the realms of film, TV, and social media into compressed metaphors and narrative stories.

Within McCormick’s body of work, seemingly incompatible elements cohabitate with ease—reflecting the conflicting histories of Western culture. Here, as in his paintings and drawings, nostalgia for a fabled past abuts the realities of the “American dream” that confront him daily in Downtown Los Angeles, where his studio is located.

Inside a building full of galleries on Bay Street. Years ago, before I came to Bellingham, it was a Montgomery Wards, so I hear. When I came to Bellingham, it was a place called Bay Street Village. Had some art spaces and eateries.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students studied the life of Pablo Picasso. In doing so, they each created a Picasso-style self portrait that exposes a profile in tandem with the frontal view.

Students used the principle of rhythm to create these very interesting and fun self portraits in a 20th-century collage format.

Superstition Exhibit

The show includes interpretations of well-known superstitions such as knocking on wood and making a wish on dandelion seed pods, as well as more personal talismans. Some superstitions are presented in a light-hearted way, and others are serious. Belief in superstitions may stem from the desire to create order and to explain the unexplainable, and from the human tendency to readily associate events that are scientifically unrelated.
