This morning along Chalkwell Beach, Essex UK.

Come early. Bring a wide lens. Get home before the weekend crowds arrive. Sit in garden with a glass of vino.

I came to this location over two years ago but didn't find this particular spot until it was too late and the light had gone. This time I marched directly to it for sunrise and managed to nail it. What a gorgeous place.

17th Century Pub near Tilbury Docks and the modern day cruise terminal. I've never been in but it's highly thought of by long term residents.

Not to be confused with the more fashionable and celebrated "World's End" pub in London. They got the apostrophe...

A young herring gull learns quickly how to get a free lunch when there’s people around eating chips. Shot with a 50mm prime you’ll note. That’s how confident they are…!

Taken at Bempton a couple of weeks back - the RSPB site is heaving with people trying to catch a glimpse of the albatross. Ah me.

I've had an ambition to capture a half decent frosted Teasel shot for some time. Here's two in one morning...

A fabulous day in December, albeit a brief hour of fabulous photographic conditions.

Glasgow is beautiful city with fantastic architecture & a great city to visit for many reasons. Hope this gives you a flavour of what it has to offer.

The call came, I answered. "Where are your open Rose pics?" came the cry, all the way from Western Australia. Well despite a stiff breeze, necessitating the 70-200mm lens (for me anyway), here we go with the 2025 season opener!

I do love trying my hand at contre-jour... the snapper was my friend, he wasn't posing and, in this case I rather like the overly dark shadows. In reality, there were not as dark, but in b&w the camera has picked up the contrast to more effect.

After posting an unpopulated version this concept sprang to mind…it took quite a few shots (about 15) to get the look I had in mind.

The castle is situated on the Laich of Moray, a fertile plain that was once the swampy foreshore of Spynie Loch. This was originally a more defensive position than it appears today, long after the loch was drained.

The motte is a huge man-made mound, with steep sides and a wide ditch separating it from the bailey. The whole site is enclosed by a water-filled ditch, which is more a mark of its boundary than it is a serious defensive measure.

Duffus Castle was built by a Flemish man named Freskin, who came to Scotland in the first half of the 1100s. After an uprising by the ‘men of Moray’ against David I in 1130, the king sent Freskin north as a representative of royal authority.

He was given the estate of Duffus, and here he built an earthwork-and-timber castle. Freskin’s son William adopted the title of ‘de Moravia’ – of Moray. By 1200, the family had become the most influential noble family in northern Scotland, giving rise to the earls of Sutherland and Clan Murray.

In about 1270, the castle passed to Sir Reginald Cheyne the Elder, Lord of Inverugie. He probably built the square stone keep on top of the motte, and the curtain wall encircling the bailey. In 1305, the invading King Edward I of England gave him a grant of 200 oaks from the royal forests of Darnaway and Longmorn, which were probably used for the castle’s floors and roofs.

Come in out of the cold wind and rain, sit down by the fire. We have a table for you and there's refreshments on offer. You have a dog with you? No problem, we'll fetch him a bowl of water and he can watch the harbour through the window...
