The Piazza lies inside the northern gate in the Aurelian Walls, once the Porta Flaminia of ancient Rome, and now called Porta del Popolo. This was the starting point of the Via Flaminia, the road to Ariminum (modern Rimini) and the most important route to the north. At the same time, before the age of railroads, it was the traveller's first view of Rome upon arrival. For centuries, the Piazza del Popolo was a place for public executions, the last of which took place in 1826.
The entrance of the Tridente from Piazza del Popolo, defined by the "twin" churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto (left, built 1662-75) and Santa Maria dei Miracoli (right, built 1675-79). The Via del Corso exits between the two churches.
An Egyptian obelisk of Ramesses II from Heliopolis stands in the centre of the Rome's Piazza Del Popolo - as read in Dan Browns "angels & demons".
Michelangelo's dome rises to a total height of 136.57 metres (448.1 ft) from the floor of the basilica to the top of the external cross. It is the tallest dome in the world. Its internal diameter is 41.47 metres (136.1 ft).

These are the backs of the angels in my previous picture. I really like the way this came out. It makes them seem gigantic.
The venerated icon painted by St Luke of the Blessed Virgin, known as the Madonna del Popolo, and enshrined at the high altar of the Santa Maria del Popolo. Donated to the church by Pope Gregory IX in 1231, it was previously in the treasury of the Lateran. The altar is from 1627.

Tutankhamun's Anubis bears many features characteristic of a dog: long muzzle, eyes with round pupils, five-toed forefeet and four-toed hind feet. But the tail, drooping down the side of the shrine, is long and straight; and club-shaped at the tip, more like the brush of a fox than the curved tail of a dog, which is normally carried in an upright position rather than low down like that of a jackal, wolf, or fox.
