Is YFE really for Class-based Social Justice? In its leaflet dated 5.6.05,Youth for Equality wrote eloquently ofhow 'varg' (Class) is the only valid reality in Indian society. In last night's leaflet, .
YFE hasquoted the international corporatemedia on how reservations wtll hamper merit and make other countries suspect India's talent We wouldlike to ask the YFE to reflect upon abasic contradiction in their arguments: On the one hand, they claim they believe thatsociety is class-based, so caste-based reservations are unwelcome, but reservations based .
on 'economic criteria' are acceptable. In other words, the polrcy of reserv1ng seats for deprivedstudents is OK by the YFE, as long as caste is .
not the basis fordeciding who ls deprived. .
But on the other hand, YFE claims that admissions to higher education or jobs based on anything buttop marks obtained in competitive exams, would 'harm merit'. So.ifone accepts this logic, won'tclass--based reservations for the poor,also 'harm merif? Wouldn't the international press havemade an equal hue and cry ifcaste-based reservations were replaced by a50%quota for the poor? Or is the YFE claiming that only 'lower castes' are inherently incapable of 'merit', whereasthe poor of upper castes are capable of it? Either the YFE should admit that their argument about 'merit' is flawed and false; or they must admrt that theydo:1't really support 'economic criteria-based quotas'. .
'International Corporate Media': YFE's 'Expert' on Indian Reality! It is interesting that the YFE,which was recently lambasting the Left for upholding ioreign ideology' and for being unable to understand Indian reafity, sees the 'international media' as 'unbiased'! Even in Britain and the US, thousands of common citizens believe that their ·embedded' media liedto them about the invasion of Iraq. That media suffers from various biases-including its imperialist and racist outlook.Expecting this .

Left understands byclass.Class is what allows the owners of wealth to exploit the labourofthe vast majority of those who are condemned never to own weatth.Rememberthat this class society,which speaks highly of merit, does not allocate wealth and resources based on merit Those who till the land may be best qualified to own it, those who toil to makegrains grow, surely have the merit to eat the best of food; but these meritorious sections are landless, poorest, hungriest. In India, caste is a phenomenon that has facilitated and ossified the exploitation of labour; it has blocked social mobility, by fixing a division of labour (with supposedly divine sanction) based on birth. So, in India)caste is not simply social 'identity'-it crystallises together variousother economic and social factors.That is why casteso often overlaps with class,and while caste is not the only marker ofdeprivation. (economic,gender and other criteriaare also there) it is often a the most reliable indicator of deprivation. Class strugglecan never be waged without breaking this caste-caused lack ofsocial mobility. .
YFE tells us that the poor of all castes are deprived of access to higher education. Quite true.and we appeal to them to jotn the Left-led movement for schools and colleges offering education of uniformly good quality to all students.be they rich or poor. Thiswill inevitably be a movementagainst the system that forces students to compete for a shrinking number of seats; a movement that will struggle to end the sale of education as a commodity and the reservation of education for the rich; an end to a distorted notion of 'merit' that punishes students for poor marks, and tragically kills young people (through ever-increasing suicides)who fear 'failure'. The YFE has no agenda ofsuch a struggle to ensure education for all. .
But think: if the poor of all castes are uniformly deprivedof higher education, why is it that the relatively well-off of all castes are not equally well-represented in higher education?Why is it that upper castes who constitute one third of the population, dominate a disproportionate 2/3rds of the seats in higher education? .
Is it because they have inbom racialmerit'? If we don't subscribe to this racist argument. then we must accept that social discrimination of caste is blocking access to higher education. Reservations are amust tv address this caste-based discrimination.It is true that women,too, are dtsproportionately ill-represented in higher education, as are those from economically and regionally weaker sections So,we can debate about how to combine caste-based reservations with measures that take into account economic, gender and regional deprivation. But to argue that caste as acategory must be ignored, is to pretend to be blind to social reality. .
S< AISA condemns the anti-poor move of the UPA Government to hike oil prices -which will immediately cause the prices of transportation and all essential commodities to shoot up. Students must join other sections of s ociety in protesting against this anti-people move. .
