How come the Netherlands does not have natural rocky landscapes?
That has to do with the history of the country. The majority of Dutch soil is supplied by the sea, rivers or the wind. Only in places where the land ice was advancing in the ice ages has the landscape undergone a remarkable change, leaving some rocks which originated from the Scandinavian area. A number of ice age hills characterize the landscapes in the provinces of Utrecht, Gelderland and Overijssel. The landscape in the south of Limburg is also somewhat "un-Dutch". Loess is found there, also known as Limburg clay. The landscape in South Limburg is also much more hilly than in the rest of the country. The highest point in the Netherlands, the Vaalserberg, is located at 322.5 meters above sea level.
The past 10,000 years
In the last ten thousand years, the landscape has mainly been shaped under the influence of the North Sea and rivers. The sea was influential in three ways. First, the sea deposited large amounts of sea clay on the coast. Second, the sea formed huge dune complexes. Thirdly, the sea gradually broke up the peat areas that were originally algae behind the beach walls. This created, for example, the Zuiderzee (now the Ysselmeer) and the Biesbosch area. Over time, partly due to the effect of the wind, the sand drifted and dunes were formed.
Man appears on the scene
Besides natural factors, the landscape is also determined by man. Two thousand years ago, the entire west of the Netherlands and large parts of the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, North Brabant and Limburg were covered with different types of peat. People 'harvested' almost all of this peat. Dried peat used to be an important fuel. The lakes and ponds that were created as a result, were often drained. A good example of this is the Prins Alexanderpolder, with its -6 meters below sea level the lowest point in the Netherlands. In the places where the peat disappeared, the sloping sandy soil surfaced. Before man appeared on the scene, creeks had plenty of space. By damming the creeks, large parts of fertile land was released for e.g. agriculture.
