Stone Circle Access visits take place outside the normal opening times at Stonehenge, and are very early in the morning or late in the evening, and are not offered during the normal opening times.
For those of you who have not visited this sacred site, we should mention that the complex is roped off. Visitors observe the stones from a distance and are not permitted within the temple complex. Our special access tours allow you to be amongst the stones. Your guide will bring to life its many myths, legends and rich and fascinating history.
We have arranged with English Heritage for you to experience a unique guided visit to this ancient sacred site - beyond the fences and after the crowds have gone home. Walk amongst the stones and experience the magical atmosphere within the inner circle.

On Sept. 20, 2012, sandhogs working on the East Side Access project broke through the last piece of wall separating the Manhattan tunnel from the Queens tunnel, thereby taking a big step toward a contiguous tunnel more than 3.5 miles long from Sunnyside Yard in Queens to 37th Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan

Big Sky Montana, Summit Hotel
In 1968 Chet Huntley floated the idea that he would build a resort in his home state Montana. Huntley's NBC news partner David Brinkley said Huntley had an almost mystical love for his native Montana. That year Chet Huntley and his wife Tippy, vacationed at Jim and Patty Goodrich's 320 Guest Ranch near Lone Mountain. Lone Mountain made a big impression. Huntley asked the Goodriches to keep an eye out for some land he could buy. Huntley's earliest plan was to build a dude ranch which could be used as a tax shelter for investors. The Goodriches sent Huntley a flyer on Sam Smeding's Lone Mountain Dude Ranch. Huntley's investor friend was Ed Homer, an executive with Chrysler Realty, a wholly owned subsidiary of the number 3 auto maker Chrysler Corp. Chrysler Realty Corp. was founded in 1967 as an off shoot from owning so many warehouses office buildings, and dealer buildings. Homer bought in to the idea but with bigger plans - he hired a ski consultant to study the idea of a ski resort. The ski area consultant was Kingsbury Pitcher, from Santa Fe, NM. Pitcher was a former ski insturctor, rancher and a graduate of Stanford Univery in economics. Pitcher was an advisor for the developers of Snowmass at Aspen, Sun Valley, Idaho and Jay Peak, VT. He developed the Sierra Blanca ski resort near Ruidoso for Robert O. Anderson. A one day consultant in 1970 was three-time Olympic gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy who heli-skied in perfect powder on the run now known as Ambush. Killy told Huntley and Pitcher conditions were "magnifique". A feasibility study was made by David J. Flood of Manduco Corp. The consultants recommendation was to build two villages - one at the base of Lone Mountain, the other in an open meadow three miles from U.S. 191. Huntley and Homer moved quickly.
Lone Mountain Ranch consisted of the Emmett Crail Cattle Ranch and later the B-K Ranch which was owned by Jack M. Hume in the 50's and 60's. Hume was the early owner and manufacturer of Sun Rite products. Sam S. Smeding bought the cattle ranch from Hume in 1962. He sold the 1,880 acres in the Gallatin River Canyon for $350,000 to Chrysler Realty. Smeding's Lone Mountain ranch land was primarily used for the Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane designed golf course. Palmer was age 41 when he designed the $500,000 golf course. Palmer teamed with Francis Duane and they also designed the Bay Course at Kapalua, Hawaii in 1974.
The land for Mountain Village would be secured from Burlington Northern in a land swap. The term "Big Sky" was used by the state of Montana as a marketing adjective for the entire state. Chet Huntley made a visit to Helena to ask the Governor Forest Anderson of Montana for permission to use "Big Sky" for the resort's name which was enthusiastically granted. The $1.1 million 9-mile road from US 191 was funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity and Gallatin and Madison Counties.
In 1969 Chrysler hired Gustav "Gus" Raaum, who helped develop Teton Village in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to be president and chief executive of Big Sky - calling it an opportunity to start from scratch. Raaum, during his younger days, was a Norwegian Ski Jumping champion.
Chet Huntley's title was Chairman of the Board of Big Sky but also the celebrity fronting for the five corporations that owned the resort - Chrysler Realty Corp., Continental Oil (Conoco), Burlington Northern Railroad, Montana Power Co. and Northwest Orient Airlines pooled about $20 million to build the world class resort from scratch. Chet Huntley would own about 1% of the stock but as chairman of the board he had enormous influence. Huntley incurred the rath of environmental groups and many Montanans fought the development tooth and nail. Big Sky managed to open a year behind schedule in March 1974.
Huntley died of lung cancer at age 62 three days before the grand opening ceremonies. Tippy Huntley took over Chet’s marketing role. Owner Chrysler Realty decided to divest its real estate development assets and sold to Boyne USA Resorts in 1976 for $7.5 million the 204-room Huntley Lodge, 4 lifts, a shopping and convention center, and a golf course located on 2,500 acres. Everett Kircher said he had a romance with Lone Mountain after skiing it. He stated Big Sky with its 2,700 skiable vertical drop is the finest ski terrain in the country. Kircher, the sole owner of Boyne Mountain in Michigan, was well known for adapting new methods of ski instruction, and innovations in artificial snow and grooming equipment.
Gustav Raaum said the deal split Big Sky ownership in two, with Boyne Mountain/Kircher taking over the former Big Sky of Montana Inc. and a new company named Big Sky of Montana Realty Inc., who kept ownership of remaining acres and unsold condominiums. On Aug 13, 1977 Big Sky of Montana Realty auctioned off 149 condominiums raising $4.1 million to which paid off the $2.3 million in construction loans owed to First National Bank of Bozeman and Security Trust Bank of Billings. Nationally recognized Kennedy, Kenison and Wison were the auctioneers. Montana Governor Thomas Judge bought a condo for $21,000. Raaum departed Big Sky in 1977 to start an investment company in Seattle known as Hill-Raaum-Pietromonaco.
By 1999 Big Sky was averaging 300,000 skier days per year and by 2018 skier days were 500,000.
In 1999 the 10-story Summit Hotel opened, it was the largest single development undertaken in Big Sky since the resort's inception in 1974. The $45 million luxury condominium hotel has 106 units with capability of locking off to 222 hotel rooms. Some said you could ski right out your hotel window. Stephen Kircher, the project coordinator and vice president of Boyne USA said within 300 feet of the hotel's entrance are 3 high capacity lifts. The Summit included 8 two story, $1.5 million penthouses. Condo prices started at $290,000 or $337 per square foot for an 857-square-foot condo. In August 2009 the Summit hosted President Obama and family.
The Kircher family continues to operate Big Sky. Many of the college-age folks who served as bellman and bartenders in the late 70s and early 80s now serve in leadership roles at Big Sky Resort. They’ve seen Big Sky Resort grow and evolve and have played an integral part in making it happen. Now there are a combination of 21 different hotels and outside condo options. Named after Everett Kircher, the founder of Boyne USA is Everett 8800, a restaurant located at the top of Andesite Mountain (elevation 8,800 ft) and accessable only by the Ramcharger chair lift.
In 2016 Big Sky Resort' parent company, family owned Boyne Resorts, unveiled Big Sky 2025, a plan to invest $150-million dollars in mostly on-mountain improvements over the next 10 years, but the plan is already underway. This summer, the resort installed two brand new chairlifts – one of them state-of-the art. Powder Seeker, the high-speed, six-seat chairlift with heated seats, head rests and blue bubble covers, is not only the most technologically-advanced chairlift installed this year in the country, but it’s also the highest bubble chairlift in North America with the top terminal sitting at 9,812 feet.
The plan also calls for 12 upgraded or new chairlifts, including a 10-person gondola, new on-mountain restaurants, a high-alpine zip line, a new hotel, new restaurants and retail shops, a new gondola and night skiing. Also renovations of the Summit Hotel and Huntley Lodge is planned.

Cuxton is the first village west along the Medway as you leave Rochester. I can't believe it was ever an out of the way place, situated as it is on the river and the high road between Rochester and Maidstone. And the A228 now carries large amounts of traffic th towns further west where new housing is springing up, and also as a link road between the two Kent motorways.
I have been trying to find St Michael for a few years. You can see the church's tower from the high speed line, yet from the road it is invisible. I tried all the roads up the valley side and through the village itself, with no luck.
For the church is accessable via a narrow lane, marked by an information board, with no hint if you can drive you car up to the church or if you could turn round once there.
So, we parked in the village and I walked up the hill, then the lane, huffing and puffing as I climbed the last steps to the churchyard. I had been assured it was always open, so I hoped it was.
The porch door was ajar, and once inside it was barely light enough to see. I found a couple of light switches, but only for the chancel, the rest in shadows.

A fine example of a church that has been progressively extended. The north wall of the nave is Norman, with the original quoins of local tufa showing clearly. There are few churches that have three quoins showing as well as they do here. The chancel has been lengthened almost to the edge of the escarpment, whilst at the other end a fifteenth-century tower has been added, cut into the hillside. There is a well-known local rhyme - 'If you should find a church miswent, go to Cuxton in Kent' - which derives from the fact that the church is orientated more to the south than the east. In the Middle Ages churches were laid out on the date of their patronal festival and on St Michael's day (29 September) the sun rises further south, which probably accounts for the orientation. There is a good holy water stoup in the porch and remains of the rood loft staircase. In the splay of a north window are the patterns of vine leaf murals, similar to those in nearby Leybourne.

COOKSTONE.
NOW usually called and written Cuxton, lies the next parish northward from Halling. It is written in Domesday, Coclestane, and in the Textus Rossensis, Cucolanstan and Cuclestena.
THE PARISH of Cookstone, or Cuxton, is about four miles square; the river Medway is its northern boundary, close to which is the mansion of Whorne'splace, and not far distant from it the church, close by which the road leads from Stroud to Halling, &c. southward across this parish; hence the ground rises over much hill and dale, among the woods; among which is Ranscombe farm, and Upper and Lower Bush; about half a mile north west from which, beyond the summit of the high hill, is Cobham-park, a small part of which is within the bounds of this parish, as is Knight's-farm, adjoining the pale of it; which, as well as Ranscombe, is the property of the earl of Darnley. The soil of it is chalky in the lower parts of it, but more westward it is a loamy earth, and much of it very fertile land. It is rather more healthy than Halling, being freeer from the marshes, the ground or upland rising almost immediately from the river.

Buglossum latisolium semper virens, the larger never dying buglosse, found near Whorne's-place, by Mr. J. Sherad. (fn. 1)
Solanum lethale, dwale or deadly night shade, said, by Mr. Miller, to over-run most of the yards and such like places in this parish.
Orbanche flore minore,lesser flowered broom rape, found by Mr. Rand in a field northward of Whorne's-place.
This parish, with others in this neighbourhood, was antiently bound to contribute to the repair of of the first pier of Rochester-bridge. (fn. 2)
THIS PLACE, with the church of it, dedicated to St. Michael, was given to the church of St. Andrew, in Rochester, and Swithwlf, bishop of that see, by Ethelwolf, king of the Saxons, and son of king Ecbert, free from all service, together with all its appurtenances, with the seisure of thieves, and with all other matters which belong to the church of St. Andrew, together with the fields, woods, meadows, feedings, marshes, in small and in great, in known and unknown. Here, as well as at Halling, and other places described in this History, there is no small difficulty in settling the date of the gift; the charter of it, in the Textus Rossensis, mentions its being given in 880, the 13th year of king Ethelwolf's reign, and Ætherland, archbishop of Canterbury, is one of the witnesses to it, who came to that see in 871, and died in 888; but king Ethelwolf died in 857, which is fourteen years before that archbishop's time. The 13th year of king Ethelwolf's reign was 853, a time indeed when he was only king of the Saxons, his son Athelstane reigning in Kent. Philipott and the Register Rossensis mention its being given in 838, viz. the first year of king Ethelwolf. The reader therefore will form his own judgement of this matter as he likes best. The church of Rochester did not possess it long, for it was soon afterwards wrested from it in the Danish wars, which then disturbed this kingdom. William the Conqueror gave this place, among other vast possessions, to his half brother, Odo, bishop of Baieux, but archbishop Lanfrace recovered it, among others, which had been taken from the churches of Canterbury and Rochester, in that solemn assembly of the whole county, held at Pinenden-heath, in 1076. After which he restored it to bishop Gundulph and the church of St. Andrew, (fn. 3) and the gift of it was afterwards confirmed by several archbishops of Canterbury.
In the general survey of Domesday, taken about four years afterwards, this place is thus described undeer the general title of the lands of the bishop of Rochester.
In Essamele hundred the same bishop (of Rochester) holds Coclestane. It was taxed in the time of king Edward the Confessor at two sulings and an half, and now for two only. The arable land is six carucates. In demesene there are two, and 15 villeins, with nine borderers, having five carucates. There is a church and two servants, and one mill of 30 pence, and 20 acres of meadow. In the time of king Edward and afterwards it was worth four pounds and 10 shillings, and now 10 pounds and 10 shillings.
Gundulph, bishop of Rochester, in the reign of king William Rusus, following the example of archbishop Lanfranc, separated his maintenance from that of the monks of his church, in which division this manor was allotted to the bishop and his successors.
On a taxation of the bishop of Rochester's manors, in the year 1255, it appears that Cukelstane, then esteemed as a member of the manor of Halling, had within it two hundred and fifty-eight acres of arable, each worth fourpence at the most, by reason there was no marle there; that there were twenty acres of salt meadow, each worth sixpence, and the mill at Cukelstance was valued at one marc. In the valuation of the bishop's manors, at the latter end of the above reign, this of Cukelstane, as an appendage to the manor of Halling, has been already fully mentioned under the description of that manor, but in a subsequent valuation, in which the manors of Halling and Cookstone are valued separately, the latter is valued at forty marcs. There is an account in a manuscript, in the Cotton library, of the stock which should remain on this manor of the bishopric after the decease of each bishop; but it is there remarked, that the several articles, during the vacancy of the see were frequently lost or purloined, and the succeeding bishops were forced to replace them with others. (fn. 4)
¶In the time of the great rebellion, after the death of king Charles I. this manor, together with that of Middleton Cheney, was sold by order of the state to Robert Fenwick, esq. for 627l. 12s. with whom it staid till the restoration of king Charles II. in 1660, (fn. 5) when on the re-establishment of episcopacy, the manor of Cookstone again returned to its right owner, the bishop of Rochester, as part of the antient possessions of that see, where the inheritance of it remains at this time, the Right Hon. Charles lord Romney being the present lessee of it.
THE PARISH of Cookstone has the right of nomination to one place in the new college of Cobham, founded by Sir Wm. Brooke, Lord Cobham, and now under the direction of the wardens of Rochester-bridge, for one poor person; inhabitant of this parish, to be chosen and presented so, and by such as by the ordinances of the college have power to present and elect for this parish, and if the parish of Gravesend should make default in electing such poor person in their turn, then the benefit of such election devolves to this parish.
COOKSTONE is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese and deanry of Rochester. The church is dedicated to St. Michael.
Among other monuments and memorials in it are the following: In the chancel, within the rails on the south wall, a beautiful monument, arms, Or, a bend cotized sable, impaling barry of 4, parted per pale, argent and gules counterchanged, for Anne, daughter of Charles Barret, esq. of Belhouse, in Essex, married to Sir Robert Harley, K. B. obt. 1603, by whom she had Thomas, buried here likewise. It was repaired by Edward Lord Harley in 1723. A memorial for Sir John Marsham, knt. and bart. obt. 1685; another for Lady Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Sir William Hammond, of St. Alban's, in East Kent, obt. 1689; an inscription for Ferdinando Marsham, Esq. of the body to Charles I. and second brother of Sir John Marsham, bart. obt. 1681; another for Sir John Marsham, bart. son of John, obt. 1692; one for Anne, wise of John, eldest son of Sir John Marsham, bart. of the family of Danvers, obt. 1672. A memorial for Sir John Marsham, bart. son of Sir John Marsham, bart. grandson of Sir John Marsham, bart. obt. 1696, æt. 16, and Hester his sister; another for Sir Robert Marsham, bart. youngest son of Sir John Marsham, bart. and only brother of Sir John Marsham, bart. uncle and heir of John Marsham the grandson; he married Margaret, daughter and heir of Thomas Bosville, Esq. by whom he left Robert, Elizabeth married to Thomas Palmer, esq. Margaret, and Mary, obt. 1703. On the south wall are the arms of Marsham cut in stone, a lion passant between two cotizes, and underneath 1630. Under an arch, between this and the rector's chancel, is a large altar, monument and inscription, in brass, for Master John Bultyll, parson of this church, and chaplain to Prince Edward, obt. 1568. In the church yard, almost opposite the church porch, is an altar monument for John Bennet, gent. ob. 1662. (fn. 14)
This church was always an appendage to the manor of Cookstone, and as such, is now in the patronage of the Right Rev. the lord bishop of Rochester. In the 15th year of king Edward I. this church was valued at twelve marcs. (fn. 15)
GUNDULPH, bishop of Rochester, who came to the see in the reign of the Conqueror, gave to the prior and convent of Rochester the tithes of Wiham, and of Hugh de Stoches, and Gaufrid de Sunderesce in Cucclestan, which gift was confirmed by several of his successors. Gilbert de Glanvill, bishop of Rochester, having, about the year 1193, built an hospital at Stroud, gave to it, with the consent of the prior and convent of Rochester, as well as of his archdeacon, among other premises, the portion arising from the tithes of his knights fees in Halling and Holebergh, and Kukelstan, to hold in free and perpetual alms, and he likewise allowed the master and brethren to take of the gift of Galfrid de Sunderesh two seams of corn, of the mill of Kuklestan. The bishop gave likewise to that hospital ten shillings yearly, to be received from this church, towards finding lights in the hospital, which was confirmed to it by Thomas, parson of this church, and in 1295, by William de Handlo, rector of it. Soon after which great disputes arising between the bishop and the prior and convent of Rochester, concerning bishop Gundulph's gifts, some of which, in this parish bishop Gundulph had given to his new erected hospital above mentioned. At length, the latter though very unwillingly, submitted themselves entirely to the bishop, and the monks having disputed the right of the hospital to the small tithes of the manor of Wicham, the bishop decreed, that they should belong to the hospital, whose right to them they should maintain, which tithes were afterwards confirmed to it by archbishop Hubert in 1193, and by Richard, cardinal and archbishop of Canterbury, in 1258.
In the year 1267, Edmond, master of Stroud hospital, and Walter, rector of Cockelestane, appeared before Laurence, bishop of Rochester, in the chapel of Bererce, and agreed to submit the differences between them to his final decree, who then finally decreed that the rector and his successors should have in the name of his church, the entire tythes of the lands called Le Bempe and Le Lud, and Stonired, and of Stokesfelde, which were not free tenement, but gavelekende; but that the master of the hospital, and his successors, should receive of the free tenements, that is, those held by military service, two sheaves, and the rector the third; that of the lands newly broke up, the rector should receive nothing, but that the master of the hospital should receive the entire tythes of them. (fn. 16)
Hameline de Columbiers had given to the chantery of the church of Rochester, all the small tythes of his lordship in like manner, as that office was known to possess his tythes in corn, so that it might possess them in lambs, pigs, fleeces, and all other small things, which his tenants holding of his fee witnessed, when the dispute happened between Ralph the clerk of Frindsbury, and Peter, at that time chaunter of Rochester, whether the chauntery had always possessed the small tythes, together with the corn. John Erpyngham, rector of Cokelestan, by his indenture in 1392, granted that the prior and convent of Rochester should take all the tythes arising from forty-six acres three rood, and three deywerks of land therein, mentioned; and likewise a moiety of all the tythes of eighty acres and a half of land, belonging to the bishop of Rochester's table, lying in five fields, as therein mentioned; (which were let to ferm to the rector, for such time as he should continue rector of this church) at the yearly rent of 10s. And he further acknowledged that all the tithes whatsoever above mentioned, were the right and property of the church of Rochester, and had belonged to the table of the prior and convent there time out of mind; all which was, at the request of the rector, ratified and confirmed under the seals of the bishop, his official, and John Hoke, clerk, pub lic notary; John Shepey, prior of Rochester, and others present at the time. In the year 1539, anno 3r king Henry VIII. the hospital of Stroud was, together with all its possessions, surrendered, with the king's licence, to the prior and convent of Rochester, where it staid but a few months, for next year that priory also was dissolved, and as well as the rents and revenues belonging to it, were surrendered into the king's hands, all which were confirmed to him by the general words of the act passed that year.
These tithes and possessions of the priory and hospital in this parish remained but a small time in the hands of the crown, for king Henry VIII. by his dotation charter, in his 33d year, settled them on his new founded dean and chapter of Rochester, part of whose inheritance they continue at this time. The lessee, under the dean and chapter, of this portion of tithes, called the chaunter's portion, being at present the Right Hon. Charles lord Romney.
On the dissolution of bishops, deans, and chapters, &c. after the death of king Charles I. a survey was taken in 1649, by order of the state, as well of the rectory of Cookstone as of the portion of tithes in this parish, commonly called Chaunter's portion, late belonging to the dean and chapter of Rochester, by which it appeared, there was here a parsonage, presentative formerly by the bishop of Rochester, worth sixty-six pounds per annum, if that part taken into the duke of Richmond's park, amounting to three hundred and fifty acres, the tithe of which was valued at twenty-six pounds per annum, duly paid the tithes to Mr. John Robinson, as incumbent. (fn. 17) That there was a portion of tithes issuing out of chantery lands in Cookstone, belonging to the late dean and chapter of Rochester, containing forty-five acres, three roods, twenty perches; also five other fields, eighty acres, two roods; also a certain portion of tithes of land there, late the bishop of Rochester's warren, when the same should be sown, of which the dean and chapter had two sheaves, and the parson of Cookstone one, which land was estimated to contain sixty-seven acres: total of the whole, one hundred and ninety-three acres, one rood, twenty perches; all which were let to ferme, anno 10 king Charles I. by the dean and chapter for twenty-one years, at the yearly rent of one quarter of good wheat, (the eight bushels bearing their heap) but that they were worth above that sum, 8l. 4s. Gundulph, bishop of Rochester, who was consecrated in 1077, gave the tithes of those lands, which he added to the manor of Cookstone, to the Benedictine nunnery founded by him at Malling, in this county; which gift was confirmed to that abbey by Gualeran, bishop of Rochester, Thomas archbishop of Canterbury, and others. These tithes continued part of the possessions of this abbey till the dissolution of it, anno 30 king Henry VIII. when it was, together with its revenues, surrendered into that king's hands, to the use of him, his heirs and successors for ever. This portion of tithes is now the estate of the Right Hon. Charles lord Romney.
¶The rector of Cookstone at this time receives no tithes of forty-six acres, of the half of seventy-eight acres, and of one third of seventy-six acres of land, as above mentioned, the remainder being in the possession of the lessee of the dean and chapter of Rochester. He likewise receives no tithe of the seventy-seven acres, which formerly belonged to the abbey of Malling. In a suit brought by the Rev. Caleb Parfect, late rector of this parish, against the earl of Darnley, owner of Cobham-hall, with the parks, &c. belonging to it, about eighty acres of land inclosed in the inner park, were acknowledged to be within this parish.
This rectory is valued in the king's books at 14l. 15s. 5d. and the yearly tenths at 1l. 9s. 61/2d.

Originally an access shaft to the Plessey Company factory built in the completed but unopened Central line extension tunnels between Wanstead and Newbury Park during World War 2. In this tunnel, a total length of 5 miles, 2,000 people were continuously at work and it became the most successful underground factory in the country. This Underground factory employed 2,000 day and night shift workers and continued to supply the RAF with aircraft parts throughout the war. Success of the LA Conservation Corps’ Paddle the LA River program is well documented. One of the program tenets is access to the river. To answer that call, program partner the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority developed ‘River Access for All,’ which offers kayak outings on rafts that can accommodate challenged children and adults and those with limited mobility.
“We wanted the boating experience to not be limited to a select group of people who can pay to paddle the Los Angeles River so we also required groups to submit a plan on community involvement and outreach,” said Lisa Sandoval, District realty specialist.
The program was booked solid as soon as it was announced and openings are rare, but with little more than a week before the final trip of the season, MRCA had a vacancy. After consulting with another program partner, Friends of the LA River, a call was made to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District.
“When the call came in from FoLAR that space was suddenly available in the MRCA program, one group came to mind,” said Jennie Ayala District outreach Coordinator and STEM program manager. “I remembered the passion of Tova and Sterling Barbour of the Veterans Advocacy Group of America. They’d contacted me for USACE support on an educational program they offer to veterans’ children.”
VAGA also reached out through veteran channels and in keeping with tradition, were able to fully book the opportunity for a group of veterans.
“One thing that we like to do is to give back, to see our veterans out here; the smile on their faces just means so much,” said Sterling. “Next year we are definitely going to do this again for our veterans, because it is so wonderful.”
These veterans were fairly ambulatory, although many still showed physical signs of their injuries, making them perfect candidates for the new program.
“With our inflatable rafts we’re able to accommodate various disabilities, we’ve had a variety of organizations come out,” said Fernando Gomez, Chief Ranger of the MRCA. “Today, VAGA was able to participate; one individual was blind and we had our first service dog. Because the KaBoat platform is so stable and if they aren’t able to paddle, they can leave it to the rangers.”
As a fully committed partner to the city’s Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan, the District’s own work on river ecosystem restoration plans to restore natural habitat where appropriate, improve water quality and enhance recreational benefits, all while maintaining its primary mission of flood damage reduction.

Fernando Lara recently completed a Hispanic Access Foundation biology and Geographic Information System (GIS) internship at the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office. He is interviewed by public affairs specialist, Vanessa Morales. Read on to learn about his path to wildlife conservation through geography.
VM: Hey Fernando! Can you tell me about your Hispanic Access Foundation internships?
FL: I started as a biology intern for six months, doing a lot of educational outreach, including joining the MERITO Foundation Beach Camp in Ventura to teach students about ocean ecosystems. I also helped create educational videos about different species and habitats that reside around the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office jurisdiction. Additionally, I did a lot of technical writing like the species status of the California condor and an informal consultation for the Southern sea otter.
After that, I served as a GIS intern, and in this position, I was able to work on geospatial analysis with products the office uses. I got the chance to participate in a lot of field opportunities and visited the Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge where the staff and I worked on trail mapping for the refuge. They hope creating a new map will make the refuge more accessible to anyone who wants to visit it. I also visited the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge to participate in California condor check ups. We worked with the Santa Barbara Zoo, and I got to see how data was collected and how they are trapped for lead testing.
VM: Sounds like you had great experiences! Can you tell me about where you went to school and what you studied?
FL: I attended California State University Long Beach and majored in Geography with a focus in GIS. I was especially interested in natural resource management.
VM: What made you want to pursue your major?
FL: My girlfriend is a school guidance counselor. She saw I was miserable in my business classes, because at the time I was pursuing a business administration major. She said, “You love maps and Google Maps, so why don’t you try switching your major to geography?” At the time, I didn’t know if there were employment opportunities as a geographer, but the school opened my eyes to the different fields I could get involved with. Sure enough, I switched majors and excelled. Overall, I did enjoy their geography program.
VM: What great advice from your girlfriend! Is there something or someone you can point to that sparked your interest in maps and the outdoors?
FL: The person who got me into maps was my dad. He used to go out of town for work, and we had just purchased a computer and internet. He did not have a GPS system in his truck, so he would call me on the phone, and I would be his navigator, live streaming him directions that I read from a map on the computer.
The reason I got into natural resource management is because I’ve always had a passion for conservation and being in the outdoors. I grew up watching Animal Planet and Discovery. I thought they were so cool. Also grew up going to my grandpa’s ranch in Mexico so I spent a lot of time outdoors and I loved it.
VM: Amazing! Can you tell me why you think it is important for Latinos to be involved in the outdoors and wildlife conservation?
FL: I do think it is important. My parents came here in 1992 and their whole background has always been rural living in Mexico, working the land, and I think it is important for us to follow those traditions we have, like living with the land. My family came from humble beginnings, but it is really disheartening to see a lot of the younger generations disconnect from nature. I think it's important for us to advocate for Hispanic and Latino communities to enjoy green spaces. I know many times there is a fear because of immigrant status, but it is important to show people what they could be missing out on. We need to encourage people to get out there more and make them feel comfortable. I know I had imposter syndrome and did not feel like I belonged, but the land and the outdoors are for everyone, so I grew out of that. However, I can see how that feeling could remain in others.
VM: Can you tell me about any memorable field opportunities you’ve had, either in your internship or during school?
FL: Yes, I did some professional development at a Pinnacles National Park when I was a biology intern. I got to meet the Superintendent and many amazing biologists who showed me around the park and their work. I spent a couple of days camping and got to see how they track the California condors. I learned about their interpretive program where rangers lead interpretive hikes with guests. I thought it was really cool to see how all divisions of the park work together in harmony.
VM: Wow, sounds like it was a great opportunity! What’s next for you, Fernando?
FL: I did recently accept an offer for a permanent geographer position at the Ventura Fish and Wildlife Office. I am also planning on getting my master’s degree.
VM: Congratulations! Do you think your HAF internships with the USFWS solidified your choice to follow this career path?
FL: They did. With all the field opportunities and things I learned as a GIS intern, the experience definitely sealed the deal for my career path.

Actuellemnt en 18 ans grâce au Plan Borloo, le quartier s'est métamorphosé en profondeur. Aujourd'hui, cet effort doit être poursuivi à Montereau comme dans tous les quartiers populaires et un accent particulier doit être mis sur l'insertion sociale, professionnelle et culturelle.
Deux mesures fortes pourraient aussi être opérationnelles rapidement dans les 750 Zones Urbaines Sensibles de notre pays où vivent 5 millions de personnes :
- l'accession sociale à la propriété afin de permettre, comme nous le faisons à Montereau, aux plus modestes de devenir propriétaires de leur logement HLM et de se constituer ainsi un patrimoine en s'ancrant dans leurs quartier.
- l'ouverture permanente des collèges et des lycées qui, en dehors du temps scolaire (200 jours par an), pourraient ainsi devenir facilement des espaces de formation, d'accès à la culture et au savoir. C'est sur le terrain et à partir de l'expérience locale que doit se construire un nouveau modèle de politique de la ville dont l'objectif est de porter le "vivre ensemble".
Retour sur son HISTOIRE : Le plateau qui domine Montereau au nord fait l'objet, dans les années 1960, d'une gigantesque opération d'aménagement, sous la direction du cabinet d'architectes Arsène-Henry. Sur un secteur de 60 hectares, plus de 3000 logements sociaux sont édifiés, regroupant environ 10 000 habitants, soit la moitié de la population communale. Arsène-Henry, architecte en chef de la ZUP, est secondé par l'ingénieur des Ponts-et-Chaussées Domain, l'architecte de la ville Pouey, les architectes Schoeller, Marchal, Maniaque, et le bureau d'étude Hubert. Les premiers immeubles sortent de terre en 1961. L'opération, calibrée pour 9000 logements accompagnés d'une zone industrielle, est interrompue en 1975, l'Etat donnant désormais priorité aux villes nouvelles. Dès les années 1970, cette réalisation suscite des critiques, et la population se paupérise. A partir de 2002, une importante opération de rénovation est engagée, dans le cadre d'une Opération de Rénovation Urbaine (ORU). Le programme comporte la destruction d'une partie des grands ensembles au profit d'un développement pavillonnaire : un millier de logements, notamment sur dalle, et plusieurs équipements scolaires sont promis à disparition d'ici 2008. Les barres conservées seront pour leur part "résidentialisées". Quelques destructions ont déjà été menées en 2002 (place Jean-sans-Peur) , mais l'essentiel des démolitions est prévu à partir de l'automne 2003. Parmi elles, les plus impressionnantes concerneront les 9 tours sur dalle " Lavoisier " (346 logements, destruction prévue en 2005) et " d'Alembert " (365 logements, promis à disparition en 2008). En revanche, la "Tour expérimentale" (premier exemple de logement évolutif en France, Arsène-Henry et B. Schoeller, 1969-1971) sera préservée. Le quartier de Surville constitue une sorte de ville autonome, peu reliée à la cité ancienne qui se trouve en contrebas, au confluent de la Seine et de l'Yonne. Une sorte d'anneau (avenues de Surville, Laennec, des Rougeaux, Schweitzer etc) ceinture ce quartier. En son sein se trouvent les logements, essentiellement de l'habitat collectif (dont 9 tours sur dalle) , mais aussi les équipements scolaires (4 groupes scolaires et un lycée-collège) , sportifs (stade, gymnase) , religieux (une église, place Jean XXIII) et commerciaux (centre commercial "Carrefour" sur la place principale). Je ne minore pas le rôle de Google Maps, révolution cartographique sans précédent et sans égale, qui aura réalisé nos fantasmes d’Aleph borgesien — l’idée d’un point d’où le monde serait visible en totalité — parachevé Mercator et permis d’explorer des parties du globe inconnues de Cook, Bougainville et Amundsen. Je n’oublie pas non plus cet exercice de cartographie au collège, qui nous avait démontré que nous étions à 3 cartes IGN de la capitale, et que le tissu urbain était de plus en plus serré à mesure que nous avancions vers le nord. Mais Plan possédait une fonctionnalité inédite, le Flyover, technologie à l’origine destinée aux pilotes de chasse, et qui fournissait des rendus 3D spectaculaire des bâtiments survolés — ainsi que des arbres et des déclivités du sol.
On quittait enfin les champs asphyxiants de la photographie aérienne pour des vues à l’oblique des villes visitées : après un siècle d’écrasement — la photographie aérienne est étroitement contemporaine du bombardement aérien — les villes reprenaient enfin de la vigueur et remontaient vers le ciel. J’avais d’ailleurs effectué moi-même une manœuvre de redressement similaire le jour où j’étais parti, à pied depuis Paris, visiter à Nanterre une exposition sur la photographie aérienne. J’étais à la quête des premières vues de Paris qu’avait prises Nadar depuis un ballon captif. À défaut de ces images, définitivement manquantes, j’avais parcouru, après la Grande Arche, les derniers kilomètres de la Voie Royale, cette prodigieuse perspective historique partie du Louvre — rare exemple de frise chronologique implémentée dans une structure urbanistique.
J’avais en réalité un peu dévié de la ligne droite pour aller voir les tours Nuages d’Emile Aillaud, le Facteur Cheval du modernisme, dont je connaissais déjà les autres chefs d’œuvres d'architecture naïve, les nouilles chinoises de Grigny et le spaghetti de Pantin.
C’était précisément l’usage que j’avais fait de l’application Plans : j’étais parti à la recherche de tous les groupements de tour qu’elle m’avait permis d’identifier, sur mon iPad. Je les faisais tourner avec deux doigts, comme un éclaireur qui marcherait autour d’un donjon, avant de les immortaliser, sous leur plus bel angle, par une capture d’écran.Un éclaireur autour d’un donjon : c’était exactement cela, qui m’avait fasciné. Les guerres territoriales entre Les Tarterêts de Corbeil et les Pyramides d’Evry avaient marqué mon enfance. La notion de cité, telle qu’elle avait été définie, à partir des années 80, dans le second âge des grands ensembles, l’âge du déclin, avait conservé un cachet médiéval. Ici, vivaient guetteurs et trafiquants, condottieres à la tête d’une écurie de go-fast et entretenant des chenils remplis de mâtins rares et dangereux. Ici, l’État central ne remplissait plus ses tâches régaliennes, ici la modernité laïque était entrée en crise. Mais ce que j’avais découvert, en collectionnant ces captures d’écran, c’était à quel point l’urbanisme de la banlieue parisienne était, strictement, d’obédience médiévale. On était passé, d’un seul mouvement et sans même s’en rendre compte de Château-Gaillard à la Cité 4000, du Donjon de Vincennes aux tours de Sarcelles, du château de Gisors aux choux fleurs de Créteil.J’ai même retrouvé la colonne détruite du désert de Retz dans le babylonien château d’eau de Noisiel.
Des hauteurs de Rosny à celle de Chanteloup, du plateau de Clichy à la dalle d’Argenteuil, on avait bizarrement livré des pastiches inconscients de la grande architecture militaire médiévales : les environs de Paris s’étaient retrouvés à nouveau fortifiés, la vieille tour de Montlhéry n’était plus solitaire, et même les immeubles de briques rouges qui avaient succédé à l’enceinte de Thiers évoquaient des murailles. Et ce que j’avais initialement pris pour des anomalies, des accidents malheureux du post-modernisme, les grand ensembles voûtés et cannelés de Ricardo Boffil, étaient peut-être ce qui exprimait le mieux tout cela — ou du moins qui clôturaient avec le génie le plus clair cet âge des grands ensembles.
Car c’était cela, ces Carcassonnes, ces Acropoles, ces Atlandides qui surnageaient avec le plus de conviction au milieu des captures d’écrans de ruines médiévales qui s’accumulaient sur mon bureau.
Si décriées, dès leur construction, pour leur kitch intolérable ces mégastructures me sont soudain apparues comme absolument nécessaires. Si les Villes Nouvelles n’ont jamais existé, et persisteront dans la mémoire des hommes, elles le doivent à ces rêveries bizarres et grandioses, à ces hybridations impossibles entre les cités idéales de Ledoux et les utopies corbuséennes.

Robert Doisneau, Banlieue après-guerre, 1943-1949 /Le mandat se veut triple : reconstruire le parc immobilier détruit durant les bombardements essentiellement du printemps/été 1944, faire face à l’essor démographique et enfin résorber l’habitat insalubre notamment les bidonvilles et les cités de transit. Une ambition qui paraît, dès le début, très élevée, associée à l’industrialisation progressive de la nation entre autre celle du secteur de la construction (voir le vidéo de l’INA du 17 juillet 1957 intitulée La crise du logement, un problème national. Cela dit, l’effort pour l’État français était d’une ampleur jamais vue ailleurs. La double nécessité de construire davantage et vite, est en partie la cause de la forme architecturale excentrique qui constituera les Grands Ensembles dans les banlieues françaises. Cinq caractéristiques permettent de mieux comprendre ce terme : la rupture avec le tissu urbain ancien, un minimum de mille logements, une forme collective (tours, barres) de quatre jusqu’à vingt niveaux, la conception d’appartements aménagés et équipés et enfin une gestion destinée pour la plupart à des bailleurs de logement social.
Pour la banlieue parisienne leur localisation s’est opérée majoritairement dans la périphérie, tandis que dans les autres cas, plus de la moitié a été construite dans le centre ville, le plus souvent à la limite des anciens faubourgs.
Architecture d’Aujourd’hui n° 46, 1953 p. 58-55 C’est le triomphe de l’urbanisme fonctionnel et rationaliste cher à Le Corbusier. Entre 1958 et 1973, cent quatre-vingt-quinze Zones à Urbaniser en Priorité (ZUP) sont créées, comprenant deux millions de logements, essentiellement de type populaire en Habitations à Loyer Modéré (HLM), mais pas exclusivement, remplaçant ainsi les anciennes Habitations à Bon Marché (HBM) crées en 1894. Selon le décret du 27 mars 1954 qui en fixe les conditions d’attribution, les bénéficiaires de la législation n’ont pas changé, ce sont toujours des « personnes peu fortunées vivant principalement de leur salaire », selon la loi Strauss de 1906. En 1953, tous les HLM voient leur surface maximale se réduire, en passant de 71 à 65 mètres carrés pour un quatre pièces. L’accès au logement des familles modestes se fera donc au détriment de la qualité et quantité de l’espace habité pour des familles nombreuses. À ce propos, le sociologue Thierry Oblet a bien montré comment se sont articulées les pensées des architectes et des ingénieurs modernistes, avec leur souci planificateur d’un État interventionniste[8] grâce à l’hégémonie du béton, de la ligne droite et de la standardisation de la construction. Les exemples de cette architecture restent nombreux : de la Cité de 4000 (pour 4000 logements) à la Courneuve en Seine-Saint-Denis (93) aux logements de 15 étages aux balcons pétales, appelés « Chou-fleur » à Créteil en Val-de Marne (94) dessinés au début des années 70 par l’architecte Gérard Grandval. De la Cité des nuages à Nanterre dans les Hauts-de-Seine (92) à la Grande borne construite entre 1967 et 1971 sur le territoire des communes de Grigny et Viry-Châtillon, dans l’Essonne (91) en passant par la Noé à Chanteloup-les-Vignes dans le département des Yvelines (78) scénario du célèbre film La Haine[9] de Kassovits. Récemment, plusieurs expositions photographiques se sont concentrées sur cette nouvelle figure de l’urbanisme fonctionnaliste français de l’après-guerre. Par exemple Toit&Moi, 100 ans de logement social (2012), Les Grands ensembles 1960-2010 (2012) produite par l’école supérieure d’arts & médias de Caen/Cherbourg, selon un projet du Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication. Enfin l’exposition Photographie à l’œuvre, (2011-2012) d’Henri Salesse, photographe du service de l’inventaire du Ministère de la Reconstruction et de l’Urbanisme et Voyage en périphérie (2012) de Cyrus Cornut. Il s’agissait là non seulement d’un progrès matériel, mais aussi démocratique, donnant ainsi à chaque citoyen, la possibilité d’accéder à son petit appartement doté de tous les conforts de l’époque. La recherche d’économie et de rapidité dans la conduite des chantiers portent à l’utilisation du béton comme matériel privilégié et à des plans architecturaux aussi simples que possible avec la réalisation de logements standardisés, dont les barres et les tours deviennent les figures principales : Au mitan des années cinquante, apparurent d’étranges formes urbaines. Des immeubles d’habitation de plus en plus longs et de plus en plus hauts, assemblés en blocs qui ne s’intégraient pas aux villes existantes. Ces blocs s’en différenciaient ostensiblement et parfois comme systématiquement, s’en isolaient. Ils semblaient faire ville à part. Surtout ils ne ressemblaient pas à ce qu’on avait l’habitude d’appeler ville. Et leur architecture aussi, qui était tellement déroutante. On les a nommés » grands ensembles. Bref, entre 1946 et 1975 le parc immobilier français passe de 12,7 millions à 21 millions de logements. Environ 8 millions de ceux-ci sont neufs, construits entre 1953-1975 – dont la moitié sous forme de grands ensembles – et près de 80 % des logements grâce à une aide de l’État avec des crédits publics. Le nombre de logements sociaux passe de moins de 500.000 à près de 3 millions, dont 43 % en région parisienne, où la demande est la plus forte[11]. Ce qui témoigne d’un effort énorme. Alors que l’hiver 1954 est particulièrement rigoureux, l’abbé Pierre lance un appel en faveur des sans-logis et déshérités et organise des collectes de vêtements et de nourriture pour les plus démunis. Cela nous rappelle également que les inégalités sociales restaient particulièrement importantes à l’époque, malgré les débuts de la croissance économique, et que la crise du logement n’était pas encore complètement résolue. Celui-ci met un terme à la politique initiée après-guerre afin « d’empêcher la réalisation des formes d’urbanisation désignées généralement sous le nom de “grands ensembles”, peu conforme aux aspirations des habitants et sans justification économique sérieuse ». Paradoxalement, le terme de grands ensembles s’officialise donc au moment même où ils son mis en question. ZUP est un acronyme qui signifie Zone à Urbaniser en Priorité. Elles ont été créées par le décret N°58-1464 du 31 décembre 1958, afin de planifier et d’encadrer sur le territoire national, le développement urbain pour répondre à la carence de logements face à l’accroissement démographique et favoriser enfin la résorption de l’habitat insalubre. I am a big fan of the All Access Ship Tour and was glad these were running again when I was on the Anthem of the Seas.
