Every marketplace needs a Santa booth (seriously, what are these places called? Thrones? Booths? Sit on Santa places?) and hence I couldn't resist building one for the Eurobricks Expand the Winter Village Market contest. Forgive the lack of tiling and the slopey tree, the contest asks for TLG style building.

Thailand is known for its many markets in every corner of the city. This is a morning market where people not only buy groceries to stock up their kitchens but also a place to socialise with neighbours. Walking across this market, people are very friendly and will talk to you like you have known them since the kindergarten.

Possibly the only "slogan" seen as part of the décor in the new Hernando Marketplace Kroger, as opposed to seeing two (sometimes) or three (on rare occasions) here and there in just about every store with 2012 décor. This is on the front wall, in the "health" part of the health and beauty department.

I shot this remodel for an architect client three weeks ago before it was finished. That shoot was for the un-stocked interior. I was supposed to shoot stocked interior and the exterior three weeks ago but the site was not ready. My vacation interfered with the grand opening and they asked that I shoot it upon my return...it is a busy gas station/market so I had to shoot from 4:30AM until sunrise...started getting real busy by the time I was finished.

This 123,455 square foot Kroger Marketplace store opened on April 6th, 2016. This is my first time at one of the Marketplace stores since I generally hunt down smaller or dated Kroger stores and Kroger doesn't have stores in my area. Here is the previous location this store replaced www.flickr.com/photos/fanofretail/11229403274/; oddly enough the old location was open 24 hours, but the new one is open 6am to 1am...
The store seemed very similar to Giant Eagle's Market District concept, except it had more general merchandise items and didn't have a full cafe / restaurant. One thing I did notice is that the left side was very busy, but the further to the right side I went, the store got much emptier. The far right side with apparel, seasonal, toys, and pharmacy was just about a ghost town... I imagine, if other Marketplace stores have similar shopping patterns, Kroger will tweak the concept and possibly ditch certain departments like apparel.
I can see why Kroger would want to branch out into selling general merchandise; the supermarket industry has lower margins and general merchandise has higher margins. The marketplace stores don't seem to (in my opinion) offer enough departments like toys and apparel to become a destination for those types of items. Also, I seriously doubt those types of items are really impulse buys that people will buy when they are at a supermarket. On the other hand, the store does seem good at merchandising other items such as kitchen or general household merchandise that do go along with groceries. The store concept seems to be in the gray area between supermarket (grocery and related items) and supercenter (a store that has pretty much everything), which may not be a good place to be.
Overall, the Marketplace concept seems pretty good though.

Finally, for Halloween itself, another opening day photo from the new Hernando Kroger Marketplace, showing more of the Halloween stuff on display in the very back left corner of the store. Those wavy white lines are permanently painted (stenciled?) on the wall, but those, along with the rest of the paint scheme, happen to go very well with the Halloween theme this store set up for it's first ever seasonal display. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with for this area in the way of Christmas décor!
