100% unimportant travel-bloggy babble:
I left Istanbul at 10pm and was supposed to arrive in Belgrad the following evening, but our train was apparently supposed to get hooked up to another train in Sofia... where we arrived 1 h late, and missed the connection. (Could it have anything to do with the 3 superstrict passport controls conducted on the way out of (and into, FYI...) Turkey?!?!?!?! :p ) We were stranded for HOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUURS. I was like... "Just as well, I didn't know where to sleep in Belgrad anyway." I now got another night in a train compartment for free, at least. :)
This compartment was shared with a Belgrad chick, who asked me to keep her company while she explored Sofia cuz she figured she'd get lost. Turned out there wasn't much to see around the station so we sat on a bench most of the day. Belgrad chick spent much time writing some application on her laptop and I would have read 2000000 pages of Dennett, but it's hard to concentrate with someone next to you. %P So I mostly sat around popping peanuts & staring at signs, picking up the meaning of some Cyrillic letters. Yey. :| (Largely forgotten now, though obviously not the backwards N. :q )
Belgrad chick spoke excellent English and could communicate pretty well with the (possibly English-less) Bulgarian station staff too, so she may have saved my ass by finding out when and where our train would be standing once it was ready to depart again. :p At least I had learned to read "Belgrad" and "platform" by then. *getz gold star frm teachrr* We got there around 4am the next day.
As boring as the Sofia wait was for me, I could not possibly wish the stranding hadn't happened because then I wouldn't have taken the handful of coolish photos I were to take during the rest of the trip.
... I would presumably have taken a handful of OTHER coolish photos. What would they have shown? HOSHIT -
My next main goal on the Interrail trip was Split, Croatia, but I would first make a detour to Austria...

Both the Cruze Eco and Sonic deliver fuel economy of 40 mpg or more on the highway and offer consumers the comfort, safety and advanced technology they expect at a value.
"With every new Chevrolet, we are able to deliver the technology and powertrain solutions that offer consumers the best fuel economy, performance and safety, making vehicles like the Sonic and Cruze Eco ideal choices for families," said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Global Marketing.
"The Cruze Eco and Sonic are the best small Chevys ever built," said Scott Oldham, Edmunds.com editor-in-chief. "They are fun to drive, attractive, well-built and extremely fuel efficient, making them excellent choices for anyone shopping for a compact of subcompact car."
Said Dana Points Parents editor-in-chief: "At Parents, we know that buying a new car is a big family decision, so we want our guide to make the process easier. The Cruze Eco and the Sonic scored high safety marks, and parents using the vehicles were impressed with the responsiveness and the family friendly features."
The Cruze - Chevrolet's best-selling car around the world - provides the amenities, quietness, safety features, infotainment and roominess expected of a larger, more expensive sedan, but with the efficiency of a compact car. The first car in its class with 10 standard air bags, the Cruze received an overall five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the highest score possible. The Cruze is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, as well as the Eco model that achieves an EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway.
Cruze Eco achieves its hybrid-like highway fuel economy using a 1.4L Ecotec turbocharged engine, six-speed manual transmission and features that improve its aerodynamics, minimize weight and reduce rolling resistance.
Sonic is proving to be a popular choice among consumers with sales steadily rising to place it among the leaders in the subcompact segment. It delivers an EPA-estimated 40 mpg highway with class-leading acceleration when paired with the 1.4L Turbo and six-speed manual transmission. The Sonic is offered in two body styles: a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback. Each is designed to deliver outstanding rear-seat roominess and cargo space.

A view of the podium (platform) and the Capitolium* of ancient Signia (now Segni). The podium is made of polygonal masonry (dated to the fifth century B.C., but note that dating of the present structure is problematic, e.g., A. Lake: "The temple as we know see it is to be dated to the II. century [BCE], to which period belong the very large revetments of the entablature and pediment" p. 111).
The interior of the podium is built with cross walls placed where it was necessary to support walls and columns of the tetrastyle superstructure, the rest was simply filled with packed earth.
Note that the walls of the podium were built up in two steps. The lower of the two is 1.18 m high, and the upper is 1.82 m high (thus total height = 3 m). The dimensions of the upper wall are 23.91 m across and 40.27 long.
The cella wall of the temple, partially preserved and now incorporated within the Church of S. Pietro, is constructed of tufa (tuff) ashlars. The back (north) wall of the central cella is visible here.
*identification as the Capitolium: is based upon the prominent location and the triple-cella of the shrine. Votive offerings at the site have confirmed the worship of the goddess Juno, but it is possible that the goddess alone was honored here without her counterparts Jupiter and Minerva (cf. Lake 111).

The American Made Car You've Always Wanted Has Arrived!!
The Chevrolet Cruze is no doubt one of the best designs to have come out of the assembly line of General Motors (GM) and the result is beginning to manifest across the world
The Cruze is giving the Japanese car makers every reason to worry especially here in America where the Cruze has powered to top of the passenger car sales charts.
The Cruze, cruised past perennial chart-toppers like the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic and may likely remain there for a long time. This is what the American models have not been able to do for many years and the Cruze seems to have started a revolution in the passenger car segment.
“Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Mark Santilli, Marketing Manager at Jeff Gordon Chevrolet. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.”

I was disturbed to learn that some dog owners that are forced to bag their dog's shit throw the plastic bags full of dog shit into this beautiful swamp. I bet I counted 10 bags of dog shit flung off into the swamp along the 100 feet of trail I traversed. And, if it is not being flung off into the swamp the bags are being piled up along the trail or at signs. I bet I counted 50 or more little bags of shit in the 1/4 mile of trail I walked. It is down right disgusting that some dog owner can't carry it back to the proper container that is provided by the Park Service. I looked in the container and it was mostly empty. Shakes head in disgust.

Behold the Bamboodu Theater -- a portable puppet show for political rallies, civic events and art shows.
I created this street theater experience to engage people of all ages to help change the world through civic action.
Our first scene features Lady Liberty and Mr. Trump, illustrating the eternal fight between hope and fear through animated puppets, visual gags, news tickers and music, powered by Arduino.
The Bamboodu Theater will be on exhibit at Artworks Downtown in San Rafael from April 14 to 28. We also plan to show it at the Tax March in San Francisco on April 15, at Marinovators in the College of Marin on April 22, at the Climate March on April 29 and the Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade on May 30.
I’m very grateful to all the gracious collaborators who helped me create the Bamboodu Theater: Edward Janne, Phyllis Florin, Mark Petrakis, Geo Monley, Jean Bolte and our friends at Pataphysical Studios. Special thanks to Angelique Benicio for inviting us to premiere it at Signs of Hope, her political art show at Artworks Downtown in San Rafael.

One of the Esso Road Maps, produced for the then Anglo-American Oil Company by Stanford's. This sheet, No. 4, covering Wales and the Midlands is nicely anonymous as it does not carry either a date nor an attribution for the front cover. Given the lack of any motorway (such as the early M45 or M50) it's likely to be mid-late 1950s.
Anyhow, all is well with the world; on the cover there's a pipe clenched between the teeth so its British and masculine. Equally, the happy motorist in the car in this cartoon is additionally wearing tweed. Not signed this cartoon is by, I am sure, Russell Partridge Brockbank, a well knwon British cartoonist and artist who specialised in motoring and aviation work.

The Red Kite (Milvus milvus) is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards, and harriers. The species is currently endemic to the Western Palearctic region in Europe and northwest Africa, though formerly also occurred just outside in northern Iran. It is resident in the milder parts of its range in western Europe and northwest Africa, but birds from northeastern and central Europe winter further south and west, reaching south to Turkey. Vagrants have reached north to Finland and south to Israel, Libya and Gambia. Red kites are 60 to 70 cm long with a 175–179 cm wingspan; males weigh 800–1,200 g, and females 1,000–1,300 g. It is an elegant bird, soaring on long wings held at a dihedral, and long forked tail, twisting as it changes direction. The body, upper tail and wing coverts are rufous. The white primary flight feathers contrast with the black wing tips and dark secondaries. Apart from the weight difference, the sexes are similar, but juveniles have a buff breast and belly. Its call is a thin piping sound, similar to but less mewling than the common buzzard. There is a rare white leucistic form accounting for approximately 1% of hatchlings in the Welsh population but is at a disadvantage in the survival stakes The red kite's diet consists mainly of small mammals such as mice, voles, shrews, young hares and rabbits. It feeds on a wide variety of carrion including sheep carcasses and dead game birds. Live birds are also taken and occasionally reptiles and amphibians. Earthworms form an important part of the diet, especially in spring. As scavengers, red kites are particularly susceptible to poisoning. Illegal poison baits set for foxes or crows are indiscriminate and kill protected birds and other animals. There have also been a number of incidents of red kites and other raptors being targeted by wildlife criminals. Although adult red kites are sedentary birds, occupying their breeding home range all year in most cases, populations from Central and Northern Europe—although not the United Kingdom—may migrate south to areas such as Spain and the Iberian peninsula during colder winters. Each nesting territory can contain up to five nest sites. Both male and female birds build the nest on a main fork or a limb high in a tree, 12–20 m above the ground. The nest is made of twigs and lined with grass or other vegetation and sheep’s wool. At signs of danger, a mother will signal the young who will "play dead" when a predator is near. Red kites inhabit broadleaf woodlands, valleys and wetland edges, to 800 metres. They are endemic to the western Palearctic, with the European population of 19,000–25,000 pairs encompassing 95% of its global breeding range. It breeds from Spain and Portugal east into central Europe and Ukraine, north to southern Sweden, Latvia and the UK, and south to southern Italy. There is a population in northern Morocco. Northern birds move south in winter, mostly staying in the west of the breeding range, but also to eastern Turkey, northern Tunisia and Algeria. The three largest populations (in Germany, France and Spain, which together hold more than 75% of the global population) declined between 1990 and 2000, and overall the species declined by almost 20% over the ten years. The main threats to red kites are poisoning, through illegal direct poisoning and indirect poisoning from pesticides, particularly in the wintering ranges in France and Spain, and changes in agricultural practices causing a reduction in food resources. Other threats include electrocution, hunting and trapping, deforestation, egg-collection (on a local scale) and possibly competition with the generally more successful black kite M. migrans.
