Spider monkeys spend almost their entire lives in trees and rarely come to the ground. Spider monkeys are well adapted to life in the treetops. Notable for their extremely long prehensile tail and limbs, spider monkeys also have poorly developed thumbs. The spider monkey uses its tail as a fifth arm, with which they can grip branches, hang from branches and carry objects. They live in the rainforests of Latin America, where they mainly feed on fruits.

Quote: The at sign (@) owes its name to its resemblance to the curly tail of a monkey, such as the Spider Monkey.

Apenheul started keeping spider monkeys in 1972. Six spider monkeys, including Pepi, moved here. Of all these spider monkeys, Pepi is the only one who still lives in Apenheul. She turned 50 years old on May 1, 2018, twice as old as her peers. The Apenheul was the first zoo in the world where monkeys could walk around freely in the forest and between the visitors. An excellent way to observe the apes without a cage.
