Pileated Woodpecker - Dryocopus pileatus

This male Pileated Woodpecker used to attack every car mirror in the parking lot at Mead Gardens during breeding season every spring. He would see the reflection of a perceived rival and try to drive it out of his territory. We always had to check our side view mirrors before leaving the park.

Chicago 'L' (sometimes written as "el", short for "elevated") is the rapid transit system serving the city of Chicago and some of its surrounding suburbs, in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is operated by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). It is the fourth largest rapid transit system in the United States in terms of total route length (at 102.8 miles (165.4 km) long and the third busiest rail mass transit system in the United States after the New York City Subway and the Washington Metro. Chicago's 'L' provides 24-hour service on some portions of its network, being one of only four heavy rail rapid transit systems in the United States (the 'L', New York City Subway, PATH, and Philadelphia's PATCO Speedline) to do so. The oldest sections of the 'L' started operations in 1892, making it the second-oldest rapid transit system in the Americas, after Boston's "T". The 'L' has been credited with fostering the growth of Chicago's dense city core that is one of the city's distinguishing features. The 'L' consists of eight rapid transit lines laid out in a spoke-hub distribution paradigm mainly focusing transit towards the downtown Loop. Although the 'L' gained its nickname because large parts of the system are elevated, portions of the network are also in subway tunnels, at grade level, or open cut. In 2013 the 'L' had an average of 726,459 passenger boardings each weekday, 456,993 each Saturday, and 328,553 each Sunday.

The older section seen here at Wilson (1900 W.) and Wolcott (4550 N.) runs over, and in places has been taken over by, a very nice lady's back garden.

On my way home from work I saw this container hanging at a construction crane in the air. I already wanted to leave the construction area behind me. Then I turned round and went back, thought this might be a nice shot ;-).

One of the twins getting a little exercise running about. In general, this is the view I get of the babies. On this occasion, they were doing laps in the front yard. This one came out of the grass and almost ran into me!!!! A split second later and back into the grass! I will say we've been enjoying the "new" front yard.

Please enjoy an image of the dazzling skyline of Sydney captured from my walk across the Harbour Bridge. It would appear that I cannot shake the fog in many of the cities I photograph as of recent years (i.e. Seattle, LA, etc). Nevertheless, even with the blanket of mist lurking overhead, Sydney was alive and bursting with activity below.

In the foreground is The Rocks, the historical settlement that would eventually expand into our city of Sydney. In the center left is Circular Quay, from which you can take ferries to Manly Beach, Taronga Zoo, Darling Harbour, or to any number of destinations. I would opine that it would take extremely creative efforts to avoid Circular Quay for any mode of transportation in Sydney. It is the central hub and battery that keeps the city connected.

A very special thanks to Richard (a.k.a. EXOGRAMS) and his wife for meeting me on that very humid evening along the shores of Sydney Harbour, after which several hours of night photography and entertaining stories were shared. (Congrats again on the monumental achievement of earning your doctorate degree, my friend)!

Have a terrific weekend (and a Happy 4th of July for my fellow contacts in the States)!

Trompe-l'oeil of the "Jeu de Paume" boulevard, in Montpellier, which mixes the vegetations true and distorts, realized on a surface of 300 m² by "Mad' art" in 2005.

The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco style skyscraper in New York City, located on the east side of Manhattan in the Turtle Bay area at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. At 1,046 feet (319 m), the structure was the world's tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. It is still the tallest brick building in the world, albeit with an internal steel skeleton. After the destruction of the World Trade Center, it was again the second-tallest building in New York City until December 2007, when the spire was raised on the 1,200-foot (365.8 m) Bank of America Tower, pushing the Chrysler Building into third position. In addition, The New York Times Building, which opened in 2007, is exactly level with the Chrysler Building in height. Both buildings were then pushed into 4th position, when the under construction One World Trade Center surpassed their height.

The Chrysler Building is a classic example of Art Deco architecture and considered by many contemporary architects to be one of the finest buildings in New York City. In 2007, it was ranked ninth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects. It was the headquarters of the Chrysler Corporation from 1930 until the mid-1950s. Although the building was built and designed specifically for the car manufacturer, the corporation did not pay for the construction of it and never owned it, as Walter P. Chrysler decided to pay for it himself, so that his children could inherit it.

The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the East River in New York City, connecting Lower Manhattan (at Canal Street) with Brooklyn (at Flatbush Avenue Extension). It was the last of the three suspension bridges built across the lower East River, following the Brooklyn and the Williamsburg bridges. The bridge was opened to traffic on December 31, 1909 and was designed by Leon Moisseiff, who later designed the infamous original Tacoma Narrows Bridge that opened and collapsed in 1940. It has four vehicle lanes on the upper level (split between two roadways). The lower level has three lanes, four subway tracks, a walkway and a bikeway. The upper level, originally used for streetcars, has two lanes in each direction, and the lower level is one-way and has three lanes in peak direction. It once carried New York State Route 27 and later was planned to carry Interstate 478. No tolls are charged for motor vehicles to use the Manhattan Bridge.

The Sea Arch Stack, Crohy Head, Maghery, County Donegal, Ireland

The first time I seen this amazing natural formation I thought it looked like something from the Prehistoric Ages!

It is located on a small peninsula called Crohy Head. Very difficult to climb down too and you even have to use a rope that is attached to some rocks on the cliff face!
