Goats are one of the oldest domesticated animals, having been used for centuries for their milk, meat, hair and skin. In the twentieth century they also gained in popularity as pets. It is believed that the native peoples living in mountains of Iran were the first to domesticate these animals.

The domestic goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) is a subspecies of goat domesticated from the wild goat of southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. The goat is a member of the Bovidae family and is closely related to the sheep as both are in the goat-antelope subfamily Caprinae. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goat.

This picture was taken in Wildpark Frankenhof in Reken, Münsterland, Germany.

Geitenmelk is lichter verteerbaar.

Believe it or not I hadn’t set out to make a photograph from this famous location. Along with my wife and children I had just been for a wander up to the Quiraing*, (Scots Gaelic: Cuith-raing) and the path passes very close to this spot. We were on our way back to the car after a morning and early afternoon of bright sunshine and squally showers, but by now it looked like heavier rain was setting in. I thought that it might just be dull enough overhead for it to be worth trying something, and this image is the result. I was hoping that the sky at the top left of the frame might darken a bit, but it didn't happen. Within 5 minutes the rain was torrential and it was time to pack up.

*You’ll often see this view referred to as ‘The Quiraing’, but this is in fact looking away from that feature towards the summits of Cleat and Bioda Buidhe, part of the Trotternish Ridge (Druim Thròndairnais).

I was reading a Photography book, last night and there was a quote; "If taking an epic shot, why not make it double epic with a reflection." I can't agree more.

A perfect reflection of Maligne Lake Boathouse in Jasper National Park and a collection of images in the different seasons, through my trips to the Canadian Rockies.

This is an enchanted place, no to be missed if you're in the area.

Happy weekend everyone!

As always, thanks for stopping by and looking, I appreciate your comments and visits.

LADAKH : Day 6

Scenic view with a small mountain stream that flows into the lake of Tsomoriri,

Korzok Village ~ Southeast Ladakh

Around 240 kms to the south east of Leh lies a region that is still less frequented by tourists.

Tucked away in a remote area of this region at an altitude of 4,595m (15,075 ft) is one of nature’s wonders - the lake of Tso Moriri, the centrepiece of the Rupshu valley which cradles the lake in mountains 6 km (20,000 ft) high. The lake is fed by many streams and it has no shortage of water which flows abundantly from Himalayan snowmelt through the summer.

Thanks for your kind visit and support.

This is a railway crossing on the way to Meherabad in Maharashtra.

A thin straight line of the railway track runs through the vast open landscape. The narrow road runs alongside. It is a place which has a distinct character. It is the topography of the land or how the road loops to the crossing, it is hard to say. Or perhaps it has to do with the whole ambience of the nearby ashrama of Meher Baba which lends it an air of silent expectation.

There is no shuffling madness here that Ian Anderson wrote about nor are there any losers running headlong to their death but there is a Locomotive Breath..ing down alright. Organized religion has its pace and time and I hope it is on the decline.

LIsten to Jethro Tull singing that song

In the shuffling madness of the locomotive breath

runs the alltime loser headlong to his death.

Oh

he feels the piston scraping

steam breaking on his brow.

Old Charlie stole the handle

and the train

it won't stop going no way to slow down. Oh

Oh.

He sees his children jumping off at stations one by one.

His woman and his best friend in bed and having fun.

Oh

he's crawling down the corridor on his hands and his knees.

Old Charlie stole the handle

and the train

it won't stop going no way to slow down. Oh

Oh.

He hears the silence howling

catches angels as they fall

And the alltime winner has got him by the balls.

Oh

he picks up Gidean's Bible; open at page one.

I thank God he stole the handle

and the train

it won't stop going no way to slow down.

No way to slow down.

No way to slow down.

No way to slow down.

Inspired by the Munich Oktoberfest, the version blumenauense born of the will of the people to express their love for life and Germanic traditions. Its first edition was held in 1984. Consecrated as the second largest German party in the world, the Oktoberfest is a fellowship of people from all over.

She was born inspired by the largest beer festival in the world, the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, which took its first steps in 1810, the marriage of King Louis I of Bavaria with the

Princess Theresa of Saxony.

In Blumenau, the Oktoberfest is in the soul of the people, part of the history of each one.

So October is a special month. There are 18 days of celebration, in which blumenauenses integrate with visitors from all over Brazil and abroad.

And there is not enchanted with the shows, with the participation of hunting and shooting clubs or with the presentation of folk groups.

The stunning clarity you get at night from very high altitude is an astronomers dream. Here you can clearly see the constellation Orion rising over Lake Tioga at an altitude of 6,636 feet above sea level. At this altitude, the air is thin and crisp and makes for some stunning night photography. We were assisted by a nearly full moon that elegantly illuminated the peaks and forest of the High Sierra. A walk down to the lake can be breathtaking, literally as the air is much thinner. Lake Tioga lies just outside the Eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park. It's distance from the valley makes it somewhat less traveled and even more of a thrill for tourist who make the extra effort. It's truly one of the gems of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.

You can clearly see the star Betelgeuse, bright yellow star on the left which is a Red Supergiant star and one of the most luminous stars in the sky. It outshines the second brightest star in the constellation Rigel, the star on the opposite corner that makes up the constellation. The clouds were so thin, wispy and moving at a good clip that the long exposure allowed the constellations to show though. I found this effect to be quite exciting as it allows you to see both the constellations and the brightly moonlit clouds at the same time.

I made the late night trip with fell Flickr photographers Matt Granz and Miguel (aka Amigo). As we drove past it was clear we would have to stop. We spent over an hour photographing the lake before moving on to Mono Lake and more stellar shots from the High Desert. The trip was mainly to photograph some of the Fall Color that dots the Eastern Sierra and we would not be disappointed. So stay tuned as there will be many more equally great shots to come.

ubermummy asked me to do a picture that conceptually means "fuck cancer". So this is what I came up with.

5 fedoradollars for anyone who can spot where I displaced my eye. It's very hard to find yet I placed an entire fucking eye ball from guy on the right in a different part of the picture.

More "hat chronicles" stuff tomorrow. I think minipimp might have a little something up her sleeve. Or will the cowboy get one over on her? It is rumored there will be another character possibly returning from the pimps past. Oh my!

I am celebrating pimp week by getting people to hold pimp signs on the street. I'll post them all sunday.

It's funny how things come together at times. It was the last morning of my vacation. I get my 4 a.m. wake up call from the roosters. I get up look out the window and it's pouring rain. I'm thinking to myself what a way to enjoy my last day on vacation. I get back into bed, and lie there for the next hour listening to the roosters just hoping and wishing for the rain to stop. 5 a.m. comes around and it's still raining. What should I do? Should I get up and go? Should I just stay in bed and go back to sleep? All these thoughts are going through my head. I'm making myself mental!

I decide to get up and go. I make my 15min drive to the location. It's still raining with no signs of any breaks. I get to the parking lot, look to the east. Rain......a lot of rain. I get back into the truck and sit for the next half an hour watching the rain contemplating if I should stay or leave. Wait.......I see a break on the horizon. The sky has a real faint glow, but it's at least a 15 min hike down to the beach. The trail down to the beach here is very steep. If it has been raining, forget about it. The trail is slick and muddy. There wouldn't be enough time to get down to the beach, so I decide to go with my plan B; shoot from the cliffs. I make my way slowly down the trail. I'm slipping and sliding all over the place. I get to the spot where I want to be at, I set up, and start shooting. The scene at this point is dark and moody with subtle light on the horizon. After a few frames the rain starts really coming down. I tried to stick it out in the rain for as long as I could but it was just too much. I pack my gear up in defeat. The conditions weren't in my favor this time around, but it's ok.......I've got great light at this location 4 days in row! ;-)

I make my way back up the trail, I take one last look at this killer view and all of a sudden I see this glow on the sea cliffs. The glow starts to get more intense, I can't say the curses that came out of my mouth, but I was swearing up a storm as I ran back down the trail slipping and sliding all over the place. The heart pounding heavy breathing intensity that was going through my body was crazy. The light started illuminating the shore line as if someone had slowly open the blinds in a room that was dark. When I was focusing in live view at x10 I could see the sunlight piercing through the rain! It was one of the most incredible scenes that I have seen. I would say this was a great way to start the morning.

This picture was shot on a tripod with three exposures (-2..0..+2 EV). I used Photomatix to create the HDR with tone mapping and detail enhanced. I increased the overall saturation with Hue/Saturation in Photoshop. 1 layer mask in soft light mode at 50% gray, using brush tool to lighten and darken some areas of the image, to bring out details. Used Nik Sharpener Pro to sharpen image.

What are all those aircraft doing to all my lovely star trails. Those vandals! And who made the sky a muddy brown?!

There was no moon on this night so all the light is supplied by light leakage from the 7 million inhabitants of the San Francisco Bay Area - yes, even the light on the face of the mountain is from light pollution.

The brown resulted because the exposures were started later in the evening - long after twilight. Without the moon to "blue up" the sky the stray light of low pressure sodium vapor lamps and tungsten lights works its muddy deed. When I get a few months I may try to REMOVE all of those aircraft trails from the SFO and OAK airport it seems, however, that it's like trying to paint out graffiti on a Los Angeles Freeway...

If you want to know more about Mission Peak I wrote a lovely article on my blog.

If you're wondering "Steven, how do you get these long exposures late at night - the park closes at 10 pm" the answer is: I'm already home asleep! I make my camera do the work by itself. If you do happen to see a camera all by itself in Mission Peak Preserve... please leave it alone - it doesn't take well to strangers ;-)
