#146/365 Before Voltron and GI-Joe there was G-Force (aka Battle of the Planets). I remember watching this cartoon everyday after school...oh the memories. I debated whether to use these figures or something more well known ones like (legos or star wars) but in the end the bird customs & nostalgia won out. Happy Strobist Toy Tuesdays!
Strobist: I decided to post a setup shot ala Dustin Diaz style. Basic strobist setup then processed it with more of a retro tone. Click here for the setup

I feel so blessed witnessing such a magnificient gift from nature. Nature never disappoint me. This sunrise in Kuala Lumpur took my breath away, the sun was emitting some serious "drop dead gorgeous" tones across the sky.
That's why it is so hard letting go of my S5 IS. It has amazing capabilities to take nature shots coupled with its megazoom and versatility. My DSLR can not even deliver me a focus of the sun's yolk. Either that, or I'm just no good? =(
I need to travel so bad! I'm thinking of an island-hop this July, maybe to Langkawi followed by Terengganu and Penang, how bout that?

We had an unusual, clear and very dark sky last night. We are about 3000km from the closest city light... I do not often get this opportunity and had to use it! I tried my best to find the celestial southpole and by analyzing the milkyway for a moment, composed this shot.... and waited......and waited.......!
This is about a 23min exposure at f2.8 with the Nikkor fisheye.
Winter is creeping in on the island and with cold nights I was kind of worried about my baby, standing out there in the cold for so long, but we both survived, there was some condensation on the "eye" which I thought would spoil the shot, but we got lucky...It was worth it!
Enjoy the weekend!

Another take/frame from my night last summer at Steens Mountain, Oregon (one of the darkest night skies found in the lower 48 states). Not a bad place to be for shooting stars!
Notes: I slightly differently processed this one, focusing on keeping the sky darker than I normally do (thoughts are appreciated). Thus it might lose something in the small view, so please do view large. It was taken just after peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower so I was pretty sure it was a shooting star, but I checked due to the shape of the streak to see if it was an Iridium Flare. The online calculator at Heavens-Above Calculator does not indicate any predicted flares for the time period this was taken, thus I am going to assume this is indeed a leftover Perseid Meteor. I believe there is also at least one additional faint Perseids that you can only see in the large view as well.
Edit: in response to those who are saying it's more likely an unrelated meteor not from the Perseid Meteor Shower, you could very well be right. I continue to hedge my bets on this one. Although, as I mentioned earlier, I discount the satellite flare theory since no online calculators predicted one for this location and time (I would love if it were, they are harder to get, heh). So if you came here from the flickr blog and are now thinking, well geeze this isn't even at the peak of Perseids and it might not even be one, I offer this shot of mine from the 2009 Perseid Shower that is definitely one. ;-)))

#142/365 Post Process Fridays episode #17. This week featured photo is from my buddy Ian (Wedlock). He captured several awesome shots of what looks to be a old school house, which instantly reminded me of "Little house on the Prairie" (the best show ever!). I went back and forth on how I was going to process it. In the end I decided to do something completely different than I ususally do for PP fridays and went with a vintage look. I'm still editing on my laptop so I'm not a 100% sure on the tone but make sure you look at it large because you can't really tell how nice the house looks in the small version. Hope everybody has a great friday!

Burj Dubai (Arabic: برج دبي "Dubai Tower") is a supertall skyscraper under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is the tallest man-made structure ever built, despite being incomplete. Construction began on 21 September 2004, and the tower is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy by September 2009.
The building is part of the 2 km2 (0.8 sq mi) development called "Downtown Burj Dubai" at the "First Interchange" along Sheikh Zayed Road at Financial Centre Road (previously known as Doha Street). The tower's architect is Adrian Smith, who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006. The architecture and engineering firm SOM is in charge of the project. The primary builders are Samsung Engineering & Construction and Besix along with Arabtec. Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction manager.
The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about US$4.1 billion, and for the entire new "Downtown Dubai", US$20 billion. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, the CEO of Emaar Properties, speaking at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat 8th World Congress, said that the price of office space at Burj Dubai had reached $4,000 per sq ft (over $43,000 per m2) and that the Armani Residences, also in Burj Dubai, were selling for US$3,500 per sq ft (over $37,500 per m2).

Ok, something different today. Enough of these shots with old abandoned places and creepy green tiles :-) They will continue soon enough.
I am currently running out of new material and ideas. That's not too bad, because I still have a vault full of pictures from Russia, New Zealand and USA :-) This one is another one from Chuzhir, Lake Baikal, Irkutskaya Oblast, Russia, Asia, Earth....
We spend there four nights. And I always tried to capture the sunset... On the first night it was already dark when we reached the little island in the lake (Ol'chon). The other 3 nights I always tried to get the photos, but usually we were too late... Though this day I was just about in time to get a photo of Kai before the sun was setting behind the mountains. There are some juxtapositions that you just don't see every day.
----
OK, days after posting I will add some context. Beside a fire station in downtown Toronto there is a gay bar called "The Pump House", which seems to be decorated with fire station artifacts and "hunky fire fighter" pictures. I was walking past one day, and it kind of caught my eye that there was a huge slobbering camel there on the patio, with a crowd around. That kind of thing does tend to grab your attention. As it turned out, the bar had done some fundraising (or something like that) for the Toronto Zoo. For reasons I don't fully understand, the camel, complete with his/her own keeper, was there visiting the bar. It seemed to be worth snapping a few photos. The camel's tongue was hanging out almost constantly, and while taking pictures I happened to notice the "hunky fire fighter" poster on the fence behind. So I started shooting to try and get this juxtaposition. The "old sepia photo" treatment was used partly because it's amusing for this, but mainly because the picture wasn't very sharp and vivid. But I thought I had to post something from that day: how often do you see a camel on the patio of a gay bar, sticking out its tongue with a pin-up poster behind? Not every day, that's for sure. :-)

So, as the sunset continued on, the colors became more intense. I usually wait to go for the long exposure once it is too dark for my shorter ones, but I have my new 10-stop filter so I have to give it a go. So why not use it while there is still good light in the sky? This exposure started about 5 minutes before sunset. The lower layer of cloud was moving one way while the higher clouds were moving another way. I had no idea it would turn out like this. I like the long streaks from a long exposure, but here, a streak would begin and then get erased by another cloud moving in to block it. The higher layer had all the colors, so the lower clouds would stop the streaks of colors. I'm going to experiment with crossing cloud layers more, now that I see what they do.
It was getting a bit darker, so I bumped the ISO up to 200 because my usual ISO 50 would have meant a 10 minute exposure perhaps. I studied where the waves broke on average, so I would know where to put the tripod so that over 3 minutes, a reflection would be visible.
I knew that in order to get reflections, I'd have to get hit many times by waves, so before starting the exposure I dug the tripod into the sand about 1 foot and let a few wave cycles wash through to stabilze the tripod. The full res image is totally sharp.
The map shows exactly where this is.

The spectacular Quiraing on the Isle of Skye gives us a classic hill-walk. This circuit heads out above the escarpment and returns along its base. A beautiful hill-walk of 4 hours at the Trotternish. After a hour of climbing the path leads to the edge of the cliffs above the Quiraing. These two climbers head off left and climb steeply up the grassy hillside. The slope briefly relents by a grass-grown drystone dyke. This soon leads to the edge of the cliffs above the Quiraing, with spectacular views looking down. The outlook across the sea and Staffin Bay to the Torridon mountains is equally magnificent. Please have a look at the map. Despite the rain we continued walking.

Eilean Donan, Scottish Gaelic for Island of Donan, is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan is named after St Donan, a Celtic saint martyred in the Dark Ages. The original castle was built in 1220 for Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings. This century it has become one of Scotland most photographed castles thanks to its picturesque setting on an islet in Loch Duich by the main road to the Isle of Skye. In 1984 it featured in the movie Highlander with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.
We just got back from our holiday from Scotland. Despite the rain, rain and rain we had a great holiday. We visit the two cities Edinburgh, Glasgow and went hiking in the Highlands of Scotland on the beautiful isle of Skye. We all go soaking wet everyday but our fireplace at our cottage and Scottish Whiskey kept me warm. Many new photos but have to finish my photo book too ;-) Above photo taken on our way the Isle of Skye. The famous Eilean Donan castle captured just before the start of heavy rain fall.

These wonderful big birds – Canada Geese, that we Canadian call Loons -- fly those great distances and are now back. Usually the loons stop-over the lake on there way further North. Last few weeks the sky is full of them. They make a big racket as they fly and when they fly low over your head, you can hear the air streaming under there wings. A wonderful, uplifting sight, to watch and hear.
This flock stayed over night on the lake and left toward the rising sun as I was going out at 5:45 am. Never the less I like the effect of the view through the trees. Hope you like it too :)

a very long time ago (before email) a friend told me that he preferred to write letters over using the telephone. when i asked him why, he told me to imagine all the consecutive positions of a letter in space -- and to visualize them together. they'd make a kind of worm-like object in space. then imagine it touching the author's hand on one and and the recipient's hand on the other.
he felt that, in that way, he was indirectly actually touching his friend's hand on the other side.
that's the first time i visualized time as a fourth dimension -- if it is. many types of images come to mind on this theme.
there was a video someone had made where he actually gathered people of every age -- the youngest was newborn and the oldest was in her eighties, i believe -- lined them up without clothing, and filmed as his camera want past them. i've searched to find it, unsuccessfully at the moment
i took this at monastiraki station yesterday (geotagged on its flickr page) after a wonderful mayday with friends, strolling around the foot of the acropolis, and having a delicious lunch at monastiraki's cafe avissinia. it helped that i had some ouzo (on ice, with lemon soda. yum.)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
La Brière, or Grande Brière is drained by the last tributary of the Loire: the Brivet, which flows into the estuary to the border between the towns of St. Nazaire and Montoir de Bretagne.
Its territory covers 490 km ², of which 170 km ² of wetlands in the heart of which the Grande Brière marsh Mottière alone covers 70 square kilometers, which has 21 municipalities.
Barges and cottages: two peculiarities of the Brière
The cottage is home to traditional roofs in that area of swamp. At a time when this area was transformed into island each winter, the stubble was the only resource available to cover the roofs of houses.
Brière Park, anxious to preserve this precious heritage, continues its work: it is free to offer its consulting services and architectural allocates regional aid for construction and renovations of cottages.
The places to discover the cottages: the village of Saint Kerhinet Lyphard, fully restored by the Parc Naturel Régional de Brière in the early 70s, the village of Saint-Kerbourg Lyphard, Mayun at the Chapelle des Marais, l Island Fédrun in St. Joachim, etc ...
