France. Bretagne. Morbihan (56).

un posto incantevole con una natura selvaggia;

Bosnia and Herzegovina often known informally as Bosnia, is a country in Southeast Europe, located within the Balkans. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. Bosnia is not entirely a landlocked country as it may appear on a map – to the south it has a narrow coast on the Adriatic Sea long and surrounds the town of Neum. Many people still associate the country with the break-up of Yugoslavia in the heartbreaking civil war of the 1990's. The scars from that time are all still visible. But today's tourist are likely to remember the country for its friendly, modest and warm people. The country has turned into an exciting and versatile travel destination, with beautiful mountains, numerous medieval castle ruins, seven major rivers, impressive waterfalls. Overall, nearly 50% of Bosnia is forested. A country where Eastern and Western civilizations have met over the centuries. Today integration into the European Union is one of the main political objectives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The local currency is the Bosnian mark. The euro is also accepted. Islam is the majority faith in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also Orthodox Christianity, and Roman Catholicism are all present. The wild and unspoilt nature makes it an ideal place for both adventurers and nature lovers. Mostar is the largest city in Hercegovina, with a small but thoroughly enchanting old town centre. Mostar has been most famous for this beautiful historic Ottoman-style Stari Most bridge, which spanned the Neretva river in what is considered the historic center of the city.

Mostar is situated on the Neretva River. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans (Turkish tribes) in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most visited landmarks. The bridge was destroyed during the Bosnian War. The European Union has spent more than $ 15 million on restoration. The restoration was finished in 2004. In 2005, UNESCO inscribed the Old Bridge and its closest vicinity onto the World Heritage List. For the last 450 years, Mostar has been home to the Old Bridge Jump, where people jump off the city’s Stari Most bridge, hurling through the air for a few seconds before hitting the freezing water below. The traditional jump is seen as a right of passage for Bosnian men in particular: “Locals say a man will be a complete life failure if he doesn’t take the plunge — he can forget about a job and a girlfriend.”

Melbourne has been blessed with some beautiful, sunny days this winter, which has made going for a suburban stroll a delight.

Much was my surprise the other day n a wander to discover an old Ornamental Cherry Blossom in bloom! This would not be odd if it were spring: however it is winter!

Prunus serrulata or Japanese cherry, also called hill cherry, oriental cherry, East Asian cherry, is a species of cherry native to China, Japan and Korea, and is used for its spring cherry blossom displays and festivals.

Vico Equense is a town overlooking the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy. If you're looking for a quiet corner on the coast far from the tourist crowds, this is the place! It's located on the Amalfi Coast, it can be reached easily from Naples and Pompeii as it is at the south-eastern end of the rail line. Vico Equense is the first town along the Sorrentine peninsula, and the perfect destination if you want to explore a coastal town in an area relatively undiscovered by most tourists. Stay in Vico Equense, where the pretty historic center is set on the clifftop overlooking the water, and there are beautiful beaches and excellent local restaurants, pizzerias, and gelato shops. Less than 10 minutes by train from Sorrento, Vico is conveniently located on the coast yet far from the crowds of international tourists in Sorrento.

Vico Equense is part of the greater Bay of Naples metropolitan area and is a relative quiet tourist destination. Located on a tuff cliff, it is relatively close to the ferry to the island of Capri, the volcano Vesuvius, the Monte Faito and the ancient town of Pompeii.

Sorrento is a town overlooking the Bay of Naples in Southern Italy. A popular tourist destination due to its variety of small antique shops and location on the Amalfi Coast, it can be reached easily from Naples and Pompeii as it is at the south-eastern end of the rail line. The town is most known for its small shops selling ceramics, lacework and woodwork. The Sorrentine Peninsula has views of Naples, Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri. The Amalfi Drive, connecting Sorrento and Amalfi, is a narrow road that threads along the high cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ferries and hydrofoils connect the town to Naples, Amalfi, Positano, Capri and Ischia. Sorrento's sea cliffs and luxury hotels have attracted celebrities including Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti. De St Francis Church in the heart of Sorrento is baroque and topped by a bulbous torenspits, it is bordered by a stunning cloister from the 13th century with capitals decorated with floral motifs supporting the interlaced arcades in the Sicilian-Arabic style. The courtyard is beautiful. The cloister is from the pagan era to the Middle Ages, and is a delightfully peaceful place to visit. Musical evenings, concerts and exhibitions are also sometimes held there.

St Francis Church in the heart of Sorrento is bordered by a little park. Next to the park we found this large mural. It is the work of a banksy-style artist going by the name of TvBoy. This mural which shows Lucio Dalla, Sophia Loren and Enrico Caruso. Enrico Carusa is probably the best tenor ever and who spent his last days in the hotel excelsior a few hundred metres away. Sophia Loren is a famous and beautiful Italian actress and probably the last diva of that glittering world that is the cinema of the 50s and 60s. On the mural she wearing a modern jeans. Lucio Dalla was an Italian singer-songwriter, musician and actor. He also played clarinet and keyboards. Dalla was the composer of "Caruso" , a song dedicated to Italian opera tenor Enrico Caruso. In Sorrento there is not much street art. Well worth a visit especially if you like street art / graffiti. Photo of Kanitha between Sophia Loren and Enrico Caruso.

Osprey feed primarily on live fish, which they catch from the water by using their long, hooked talons. An osprey can plunge so forcefully into the water that if will completely submerge! They are a perfect fishing machine with a success rate of around 70%.

France. Vosges. Alsace. Haut-Rhin.

2.5 Seconds series - climate change awareness project

.

The world is getting warmer. Since the Industrial Revolution, the global average surface temperature has increased by more than 0.9 degrees Celsius and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by more than a third. Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the warmest years on record taking place since 2010. 2016 and 2019 were the warmest years on record.

Global warming, the gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans and atmosphere, is caused by human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels that pump carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. More than 197 international scientific organizations agree that global warming is real and has been caused by human action.

It is causing a set of changes and complex shifts to the Earth's which climate scientists call “climate change”. Volcanic eruptions and variations in solar radiation from sunspots have contributed only about two percent to the recent warming effect. The balance comes from greenhouse gases and other human-caused factors.

The rapid rise in greenhouse gases is a problem because it’s changing the climate faster than some living things can adapt to. Also, a new and more unpredictable climate poses unique challenges to all life. A one-degree global change is significant. In the past, a one- to two-degree drop was all it took to plunge the Earth into the Little Ice Age.

Already, global warming is having a measurable effect on the planet.

Happy Easter Monday to all our followers, commenters, admirers, and survivors! We will continue to post images on Bank Holidays while the Covid-19 crisis continues. For today, we have a remarkable image of Main Street in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan with the hill rising away from us, and a crowd of men(?) gathered about half way down! What was the occasion?

+++ UPDATE +++

Much happy speculation as to the occasion, but nothing definite that we could hang our Sunday Best hats on. However, we did narrow the date. Our Lawrence photo collection dates between 1865 and 1914. As you’ve all managed from dating various buildings to narrow the date to 1909-1922, for our purposes, that means this photograph was taken between 1909 and 1914. Thank you, one and all!

Thanks for all the kind comments on retirement. Rather a small inconvenience in the grand scheme of things and just praying this virus will subside and we'll all get back to normal. The Gravestone of Catherine Emmet appears to have been found either accidentally or as the result of a planned search? This image shows a man standing over a broken gravestone near a wall and some railings. He is not dressed as a common or garden gravedigger but rather as one of the privileged classes or an academic. Was this the search for Robert Emmet's grave and what can we find out about it and Catherine?
