Symmetry is a characteristic feature of geometrical forms, system, equations, and other material objects or abstract entities, related to its invariance under certain transformations, movements or exchanges.

In formal terms, we say that an object is symmetric with respect to a given mathematical operation, if, when applied to the object, this operation does not change the object or its appearance. Two objects are symmetrical each other with respect to a given group of operations if one is obtained by some other operations (and vice versa). In 2D geometry the main kinds of symmetry of interest are those concerning the isometries of a Euclidean space: translations, rotations, reflections and glide reflections.

The Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, which is almost always referred to popularly and informally as Westminster Abbey, is a large, mainly Gothic church, in Westminster, London, just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English, later British and later still (and currently) monarchs of the Commonwealth Realms.

Yesterday I was treated to a wonderful visit from one of the most sincere people on the planet. Doug was in the area on a family vacation for Spring Break. Well, I shouldn’t say that. They were in the same state as me, but still 80+ miles away to the south. He was nice enough to come up yesterday, through the traffic of LA and let me use/touch/feel some of his awesome equipment. He has quite the collection and is ready for just about any wedding, sunset, barn, kid or anything else. He set up his Alien Bee, let me play with his Singh-Ray filters, his D300 and everything else. He even tried to explain his calculus-like method for photo processing. I used to consider myself somewhat smart, but his technique of layers, multiple-sharpening, and RAW conversions had my head spinning like a broken bobble-head toy.

We finished our meetup with a trek down to the beach in hopes of a cloud-inspired dramatic sunset. We didn’t get it. The wind from earlier in the day blew away our dramatic sunset, but with some crafty techniques, filters, tripods and a splash or 3 from the Pacific, we were blessed with a few good shots. I know his will blow mine away, but it was fun nonetheless.

As we were leaving the beach, in the darkness I saw a long rock moving on the beach. It was inching up the sand like a worm. Coming closer I realized it was a Sea Lion. Not sure if it was hurt, sad, hungry, cold or just bored, but it was very friendly, slithering where ever we went. If I didn’t have a phobia of wild animals, I would have pet him or perhaps tried to sand wrestle him, but instead called Animal Control who eventually told me this behavior was normal, for upto half a day.

I have my weekend free from photographic obligations, so I think I’m going to take advantage of that, and cut my kids hair. Maybe I’ll have a cocktail before I begin.

NOT HDR. I did bracket 3 shots and then manually blended them. I think it has a more realistic look. I was also using a Cokin GND filter for the sky, but don’t think it did much at this point.

There will be a Day Devotional

There will be a Day

I try to hold on to this world with everything I have

But I feel the weight of what it brings, and the hurt that tries to grab

The many trials that seem to never end, His word declares this truth,

that we will enter in this rest with wonders anew

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings

That there will be a place with no more suffering

(Chorus)

There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears

There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we'll see Jesus face to face

But until that day, we'll hold on to you always

I know the journey seems so long

You feel you’re walking on your own

But there has never been a step

Where you’ve walked out all alone

(Chorus)

Troubled soul don’t lose your heart

Cause joy and peace he brings

And the beauty that’s in store

Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting

I can’t wait until that day where the very one I’ve lived for always will wipe away the sorrow that I’ve faced

To touch the scars that rescued me from a life of shame and misery this is why this is why I sing

About nothing and

every thing all at once

Neurotic to the bone

no doubt about it

Some times I give

myself the creeps

Some times my mind

plays tricks on me

It all keeps adding up

I think I'm cracking up

or am I just stoned?

I went to a shrink

To analyze my dreams

me down

I went to a whore

He said my life's a bore

And quit my whining

'cause it's bringing

Some times I give

This is another from the land of very little (but still some as you can see) light pollution at Steens Mountain in SE Oregon. If you like night skies, this is a great area to visit!

Image notes: The keys for this shot were very little light pollution, no moon, high ISO (1600) wide aperture (F/3.2) and a relatively short exposure to prevent obvious star trails (30 seconds). A bit of reverse USM (30%, 60 radius, 0 threshold) and ACR clarity (you can open TIFFs as well as RAW in ACR if they are 16bit) helped to further pop the stars.

The foreground was light painted with an extremely bright LED torch from Lowes (Task Force 2 C cell Cree LED flashlight). It was really too bright at 1600 ISO wide open so I had to basically turn it on and paint what I wanted super fast or it completely burned out. I should have probably taken a second exposure at a much lower ISO and could have taken my time light painting and had a much easier go of it. Then later in post combine the two. I think I was just on a kick to get it all in the original untouched shot for this one, whatever original untouched actually means heh.

This is dedicated to littlefoot mek, she wrote a great testimonial for me. She has been my contact for a long time and we crossed paths on my very first post to the Bokeh Wednesday group. So I felt it would be best to dedicate this HBW shot to her, Thanks you are truly a good friend.

NO MORE STRESS !!!!!!

"Stress is like dark chocolate. A little of it won't kill you. In fact, small blocks here and there can be good for you, or at least give you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. But chronic and severe stress can damage your body and mind, blocking the fluid communication to and from most organs--especially in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and in the limbic system, the brain's emotional center. Believe me, you want these two systems running as smoothly as possible, with low levels of the delinquent stress hormones in your bloodstream."

Crocus is a genus of perennial flowering plants, native to a large area from coastal and subalpine areas of central and southern Europe (including the islands of the Aegean), North Africa and the Middle East, across Central Asia to western China.

There are about eighty species of crocus (of which approximately 30 are cultivated). Their color varies enormously, although lilac, mauve, yellow and white are predominant.

(Quelle: Wikipedia)

The North Sea Canal is a Dutch ship canal from Amsterdam to the North Sea at IJmuiden, constructed between 1865 and 1876 to enable seafaring vessels to reach the port of Amsterdam. It ends at Amsterdam in the closed-off IJ Bay, which in turn connects to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The North Sea averages about 100 m. The beaches and coastal waters of the North Sea are popular destinations for tourists. The Dutch coasts are especially developed for tourism. Windsurfing and sailing are popular sports because of the winds. Because of the strong tides and areas of still water, the North Sea is more difficult to sail than the Baltic or the Mediterranean. Mudflat hiking, recreational fishing, and diving, including wreck diving, are all possible. The North Pier near Wijk aan Zee shown above is a nice fishing spot. Anglers from all over the country come to the North pier. At the beginning of the North pier, just across the restaurant you can do some good sea bass fishing. In stormy weather there is a good catch of fish on the inner side. On the pier there is not really one super spot with fish. One moment there is a good catch across the corner, the other moment there is not, whilst the catch is then good at the fence. Is the fishing bad from the beach because of the cold weather, then some fish can be caught on the pier in the deeper water. Sole, codfish, gurnard, dab, flounder, garfish, sea brass, eel pout, eel, whiting, plaice, pout, sea trout, pollack, twaite, mackerel, and mullet can be catched. Various types you will only catch in summer, but a surprise is not impossible. Avoid the pier with stormy weather, because it can be perilous because of breaking waves.

A photo of the lighthouse at the beginning of the North Sea Canal. It's beautiful walk of 1.5 km to the lighthouse at the North Pier of Wijk aan Zee - Netherlands. It was a lovely sunny day but I had to work. At the the day's end I went to the beach. There was almost no wind and the colors of the sunset were beautiful. It was 30 minutes after sunset. Exposure 4 sec. F8.0, ISO80 and -1.0EV. The flying geese were taken 10 minutes before with standard exposure and blended into this composite. Please notice the fisherman at the end of the pier. After this walk I went for dinner at the sociable Aloha beach club which is open even during the winter season but today it was the first day in spring ;-)

This is a photo of the downtown Seattle public library. Built by Rem Koolhass, this piece of modern architectural art is as amazing on the inside as it is outside. This structure has been shot a ton so I really tried to give it something I hadn’t seen before. Out of all my shots that day, this one “popped” most for me. I brought out my wide angle lens (14mm full frame) and got really low to the ground for this shot. Standing on the corner, I could just barely squeeze in the entire structure. I waited for the sun to peek through the buildings downtown and captured the reflection on the side of the building, which I felt added to the dramatic nature of the structure. As you can see, there is a bit of lens flare, but I actually liked it this time. If you follow the flare trail, you can see it reflected all the way to the street sign on the left, which is ultimately why I decided to keep the street pole in. I really liked all the angles in this shot!

If you like this kind of funky perspective, here's another one of the Seattle Center.

The sun came out today! But it was cold and windy. I wanted to try a shot that had sun glare in it and that was very harshly lit. The wind blew my hair over my eyes and I caught a shot of myself moving it. The original was very very hazy.

My camera and my 50mm have become like best friends that don't see each other as often as they should. I love the 50.

So let me tell you a sad little story. There is a white snow geese (according to my next door neighbor) that has made home near our house. It is the only one around and it was accepted into a group of Canada geese. It spent a few weeks with them and seemed to be fitting in quite well. The last couple of weeks the geese have been pairing up for mates. The goose tried getting others to notice it, but stayed alone. Today the last of the geese paired up and the snow goose was left alone. Today it sat alone making cries. I felt for the geese, I really did. It looked so sad and alone. Poor goose.

Things I learned today:

Geese only breed with their own species.

It's nearly time for all of us to say goodbye to Salzburg, after the next two photographs I'll be taking you to another beautiful city in Austria.

Will it be greener pastures? Only Laurie and I know...

This is a similar point of view to my first photo of Salzburg, which you can see here, but I still wanted to post it. I got pretty lucky with some interesting light. There's no HDR or shadows/hightlights with this shot. Just bumped up some contrast and darkened some areas. The sun was shinning and was lighting up the foreground nicely, even though it was almost completely overcast. As you can see from the dark ominous sky over the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

If you haven't been following my photographs of Salzburg take some time to check them out if you like here.

This is similar to the F355 shot I uploaded back in late January with three key differences.

- The sun is reflecting in the water

- Better angle for the car

- No Flamingo flock flying

I would have preferred to have this composition with the flamingos flying, but unfortunately when doing sunset shoots, time is your enemy and I was in too much of a hurry. Lesson learned.

I used three Canon flashes triggered by Canon flash transmitter (580EX, 580EXII and 430EX).
