These photo`s were taken within a few minutes of eachother. One can see how things vary in shape, size and intensity. Here a burst from my left, at first I thought it was a lightbeam from the restaurant on top. But when I framed and pressed the shutter it suddenly came to life resulting in this view.

This photo is taken at Búðir on the mythological peninsula of Snæfellsnes. Already during the middle ages the magnificent glacier and volcano, which is situated on the peninsula's outmost post, was well-known on the European continent.
It was the scene for Jules Verne's famous science fiction, "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" - the only one of his literary works that was too futuristique to ever come true :-).

The beach of the Wall is a lesson of live geology. The mountains that endorse his golden sand have been eroded by the action of the wind, of great power in this Fuerteventura's zone, which turns the beach into a paradise for the surferos and other horsemen of the waves.

I actually wanted to upload another shot of the huge miners lamp from my last upload, but the weather was great last night to get out and play with some light painting. I was inspired by some shots of Vicki Tate who gave me some advice how to do shots like this. I think for my first try the result is not that bad :)
Have a wonderful weekend every one!
This weekend I had the pleasure of catching up with Paul C Stokes, Martin Turner and The Green Album for some photography. First off we started off shooting in Bristol but after an hour or so we made it over to Weston-Super-Mare to catch a sunset. There were some very nice looking clouds in the sky and I was really looking forward to grabbing a rare sunset picture to add to my collection; unfortunately it was low tide so there wasn’t the opportunity to get a perfect reflection of the pier but I decided to try and see what the wet sand would offer.
Many thanks very much guys for driving me around!!!
I’ve got a few more pictures to go through but after a long journey home, the travelling has finally caught up with me, so I’ll have to take a look at these later in the week.
Have a great evening all and I’ll catch up with you guys tomorrow :-)

-----------------
C'mon let's do a last tour around Urla and then next time I'ìl take you to Izmir , to my home town (Smyrna-Agean sea).
That cloudy yet beautiful morning my dady had taken me to the small harbour of Urla. He knows that I love the winter sea and that small port. As we were chatting and walking around...we've met some smarties (waiting for ready food :) ) I don't really like so much cats, yet their awaiting seemed funny to me...Then dady and I have decided to behave smartly as well: we've walked near by to take a hot tea to heat us and and to play backgammon...
The lake was partly frozen topped with a light covering of snow in patches. I was drawn to the green of the tree which gives a subtle contrast to the prevailing white. (For those old enough to remember, the title is inspired by a Jethro Tull song ).
My recommendation is to view in Light box: L

One photo that has been high on my bucket list was a snowy Yosemite photo. Willie and I have been keeping an eye on the recent storms in the Eastern Sierras and a *huge* one hit over Christmas weekend, dropping over 7 feet of snow in one day in some areas! I rented a 4 wheel drive vehicle and Willie, Alan, my girlfriend and I drove into Yosemite just as the storm cleared.
We arrived at Yosemite to see the entire place covered in white! It was insanely gorgeous. The storm had moved out a bit quicker than we had hoped and we arrived late, to clear skies. As we looked west we saw another set of clouds coming in and we hoped we might be in luck! After scouting several locations we decided that Ansel Adams had it right and we found our way over to Tunnel View for sunset. We were not disappointed! Some low fog rolled into the valley, the trees stayed covered in white, and a slit of light made its way onto El Capitan for a beautiful view!
To my surprise, my favorite image from the day happened to be one I had not expected at all. An almost full-moon rose just after the sun set, right during blue hour, and everyone raced around to capture the moon rising over Half Dome. I threw on my 80-200mm lens until Alan mentioned, "hey, try going wide." By this point I was cold, tired, and ready to get home before the roads turned awful so I fired 1 quick shot, packed up my bags and went to warm up in the car. When I got home I realized how right Alan was ... I liked this shot more than all my others!
In the end we spent twice as much time driving as we did in Yosemite but it was well worth it!

Hi I'm just gonna pretend I'm American so this counts as the 2nd week and it's not Monday yet. You can perfectly see how my Sunday night looks like as I'm facetiming the awesomest girl in NY called Gina Vasquez (known as a ballerina). Sorry for the cheezy description, it's so late and I'm ready to get a 4 hour sleep night.
P.S: I have a really important exam tomorrow morning. Yay me and my responsabilty.
Love always, Laura
I went back and reprocessed the source files for this image, this time using the 32-bit HDR Pro engine/feature in Photoshop CS6. One of the biggest differences I noticed when comparing the CS6 method with Photomatix (my normal process) is that the CS6 process results in much less noise. It's pretty amazing, actually. The other noticeable difference is that I think the CS6 version results in a more subtle and more easily fine-tuned image. Of course, that comes at a cost. As I've already mentioned in a previous posting, the resulting TIFF files using the CS6 method are twice the size. In my case that means almost a half gigabyte file. Ouch.
On a related note, I finally decided to pull the trigger on an high-performance external storage system. My new Drobo box and drives should be arriving on Wednesday. I'm looking forward to a much quicker and less frustrating photo processing and archiving workload.
The other thing that's going to help me with my photo storage is a set of neutral density filters that I have ordered. I love doing HDR, but I also want to start to even out the light in a scene using filters rather than tonemapping in software. Using filters will mean fewer photos to move and store because where I now take five to seven bracketed shots per image, with filters I should only one shot per image. The filters should arrive in the next few weeks and (fingers crossed) the lens should be as well.

Aaahhhh, what an awesome evening. :)
I was at a relative's home most of yesterday into the evening hours. With a sudden stomach ache and throbbing headache, I said my goodbyes and went east towards home and couldn't help but notice this amazing dense fog scattered about the rural roads and in towns I drove through on my way back. My shutter finger was feeling itchy, so I pulled into the driveway and ran in to grab my camera gear feeling confident I was going to return home yet again with luck.
My luck was poor, as rain began to fall once I arrived. Without an umbrella or any camera protection I had to be on my way back as I didn't want to risk my camera getting wet over 2-3 good shots.
Likewise while I was out there in the misty fog I walked out into my car's high-beams with a feeling of happiness rushing through me as each several yards I stepped out into the headlight's beams this ghostly white fog halo became more apparent, with a noticeable white arc, corona/glory at its center, as well as my own body and tripod shadow known as the "broken specter."
Some quick info on fog that every atmospheric optic photographer should know:
- FOG forms any time there is moisture present, especially after it has rained, or due to radiational cooling or the air is saturated (100% humidity)
- in order for a great fog to form we need roughly 95-100% humidity or entirely saturated air combined with no more than a 5 degree difference between DEW POINT (the point at which clouds form when temperature drops to that number/temperature..this causes relative humidity to rise thus causing the air to become saturated) and AIR TEMPERATURE
- above I mentioned "radiational cooling," this is known to occur any time of the year actually when there are clear skies at night; the temperature drops of course at night as no sunlight is warming the surface of the earth and at night when clear skies are present, this war air interacts with the cool surrounding air thus causing humidity to spike and create these very low clouds among the surface known as "fog."
I hope some of this info and my story helps you see why I love atmospheric optics and getting out in the fog once it occurs here in Illinois...it truly is a wonder that Mother Nature can do such beautiful artwork on her own.

Six miles high! You can see the snowdrift being carried off the top of Annapurna South and the main peak, Annapurna I, by the hurricane force winds of the jet stream. Annapurna I looks like its a part of the "South" peak but they are separated by a deep valley. Annapurna I is about 800 meters higher and set further back, hence appears level and connected with Annapurna South.

Part of the Orion Molecular Cloud, an immense star forming region very close to earth, The Flame and Horsehead Nebulas offer a glimpse into the process from which stars and their planets are created. The colorfully lit areas are being irradiated by the young stars which have formed in the recent past and as a result, the ionized hydrogen in the clouds glows. The dark regions, on the other hand, are areas of dusty material in the interstellar medium dense enough to obscure the glow from behind. The Horsehead is such an object and from our vantage point on Earth, it bears a striking resemblance to the head of a horse.
The bright blue star just above The Flame Nebula is the easternmost star in Orion's belt, Alnitak, also known as Zeta Orionis. It is a "blue super-giant" and the brightest such star in the night sky.
Although it appears as a single object it is actually a triple-star (three stars in orbit around each other).
Zeta Orionis is responsible for the glow of the Flame Nebula; it glows so intensely in the ultra-violet range that even at a distance of a hundred light-years, the hydrogen in the cloud becomes ionized like neon in a sign. This radiation is also speeding the development of new stars as the pressure from the radiation further compresses the material. When the density of the material becomes great enough, gravity takes over and collapses the gas into a single object where temperature and pressure increase so dramatically that hydrogen atoms are fused into helium and a new star is born.

After I got off of work yesterday I quickly made my way out to the coast to try to catch what seemed to be shaping up to be a really killer sunset. I had plans to get farther south than this spot (San Gregorio), but there road to the coast is one lane in each direction...and I got stuck behind a big slow truck. Once I hit the coast road, I tried to hurry to get as far south as I could, but by the time I hit San Gregorio I could see the sun was quickly taking a nosedive over the horizon. Not a problem - San Gregorio State Beach is a great spot in its own right. Due to storms and unusually high tides a few weeks ago, there was A TON of wood debris on the beach. In fact, getting to the beach itself meant climbing over much of this debris.
It wasn't a super colorful sunset, but I loved the way the thick clouds broke in spots to allow rays of golden light to shine through. And the ocean looked a bit angry, so I quickly ditched the idea of taking HDR shots and instead set out to capture the drama shaping up in the sky and the ocean.
I'd like to thank the flock of seagulls for being in the perfect spot to be included in the photograph. How considerate!
