With the incredibly seductive new Nikon D810 duteously waiting in my camera bag I have been itching to get back out for another shoot.

I had made plans to do some cave walks in the blue mountains this weekend but didn't manage to make it out so with a clear sky over Sydney I thought I would brave 'the coldest morning in 4 years' and visit Miss Macquarie's Chair for a simple Sydney Sunrise.

I'm still torn between the new A7R and the D810 when it comes to IQ but the Nikon is just such a sleek package right now it's hard to resist.

After giving the new EFCS a test this morning my early impressions are very positive. It certainly 'sounds' as though it removes the last hint of mechanical vibration and having it only available in MUP seems logical enough.

Time I carried on with some 'Messed up Manchester' images. Gasworks over near the Etihad given a layer filled slap in Photoshop CC, now i know these come with a tang of marmite to them so not everyone will like it.

Now for those coming on the bit.ly/14EitYf if we have time I will do some of this as a real time demo so you can play along, I'll be mailing you all soon as we are down to single figures left to see what else you'd like to see in the faff department ....

Precisely 17:00 an alarm sounds across the city of Warsaw announcing the start of the minute of silence commemorating the 74th Warsaw Uprising anniversary and to honor the memory of the fallen men, women and children who died fighting the nazis....

Teignmouth Pier bathed in the early morning sunshine.

Looks a whole lot better than it did this time last year, when it took quite a battering from the storms.

It is never going to be one of the most attractive piers around, but I must give them credit for the amount of work done to bring it back into use again, they have done a remarkable job.

In 1992, Sultan Qaboos of Oman issued an instruction to build a new mosque, the Grand Mosque. The Diwan of Royal Court then held an international competition in 1993 to find the best design for the Grand Mosque. A designed by architects Mohammed Saleh Makiya and Quad Design, won the competition. Then the construction commenced in 1995, headed by the master architect Mohamed Saleh Makiya and Quad Design of London and Muscat. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, located in Ghubra in Bausher district, was built at His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s personal expense. The long years that went into the construction of the Mosque complex are testimony to the effort and dedication that has gone into making it a true piece of marvel in marble, sand, stone and wood. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a fine specimen of Islamic architecture. It was completed six years later and inaugurated by His Majesty the Sultan in May 2001.

OK, it's not really a road, more a drainage pipe covered in concrete :~)

Bit of a stupid idea really, it was totally dark, I couldnt really see where my feet were going and the surface was really slippery, but it was worth it, I think.

Had to use the lights on the shore behind me to focus on, as nothing was showing up in front, even on live view, plus framing was pure guesswork for the first shot, which enabled me to get a better bearing on where to point the lens.

Gradually my night vision improved and I was able to step out of the way of the waves that were lapping over the top, thankfully the sea was very calm.

Want to go back again though, it has given me more ideas to try, but as the tide was coming in, thought better of staying out there any longer :~)

Location: IWay construction site, Providence RI

Date: August 29, 2007 12:33 am

Notes: Shot with Nikon D200 with Nikon 10.5mm

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The usual crew of threshold, rizzolo, skazama and rtlm401 came out to Providence to shoot the IWAY before it's impending opening of the Rte-195 East Bound lanes in November.

Down below is a haunt we visited many times prior to the IWAY construction.

After finishing the film in my F100 and Holga I allowed the D200 to come out and play. That wasn't until 11pm and the "Late Nighters" stayed until 1:20am... man was beat the next day.

You can see a group pool here of all our shots on Flickr from the night or a slick slideshow here. It may take a week or so for all the shots to be posted.

With my liking for using welding glass for long exposures, thought I should give it a try on this camera.

One problem though, a brand new memory card with no preset white balances saved and no white card to take a reading from.

So time to improvise on the spot, which is quite easy.

First take a shot with the white balance at a normal setting (see below), then use that image to set the custom white balance on the camera.

Maybe not perfect, but does give a reasonable result, there have been no adjustments to this in post production.

Watching the tide come in among these rocks is kind of mesmerising and you can lose all track of time. Thankfully they make great stepping stones to make your way back to the shore, well until they get covered, by which time the feet would be wet anyway :~)

As the sun pops above the clouds, time to switch over to a 10 stop filter to keep the long exposures going. Combination used here, the cheap XCsource 10 stop filter and one of their 3 stop graduated filters over the sky.

New energy efficient LED lighting illuminates the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge: red, white, and blue for the American arched spans and red and white for the Canadian arched span. View from the west pier of the Sault Canal (Parks Canada) National Historic Site.

The International Bridge- -a 4.5 kilometer / 2.8 mile long metal Cantilever (suspended deck) Warren Through Truss two lane bridge with a two span arch over the American Soo Locks and a single span arch over the Canadian Sault Canal. It was designed by the New York architectural firm of Steinman, Boynton, Gronquist and London; the bridge opened October 1962. The bridge spans the St. Marys River and connects Sault Ste. Marie Michigan to Sault Ste. Marie Ontario.

The Sault Canal opened in 1895- - it was the world’s first electrically operated lock, and the world’s longest lock- -274 metres / 899 feet long and 18 metres / 59 feet wide. Closed in 1987 due to a lock wall collapse, the canal was reconstructed and reopened for recreational boating use in 1998. The Sault Canal is operated as a National Historic Site by Parks Canada.
