Die Ce 5/6 2978 gelangte anlässlich einer Lastprobenfahrt am 16.10.17 an die alte Hauensteinstrecke über Läufelfingen. Kurz nach Diepflingen konnte ich den Zug ablichten.

One morning in September 2008 I had a once-in-a-lifetime close encounter with a great blue heron at Guelph Correctional Centre fish ponds. In my experience these common waders are extremely timid and difficult to approach, and I doubt that I'll ever see one this close again. It even stood and watched me for a few moments before flying to another post. The point-and-shoot Canon Powershot was not fully adequate, nor were my processing skills. They're still exciting shots. At the time I chose one frame (2/5) to post. Busy with a new job, I apparently forgot about the rest until this morning, a wonderful rediscovery.

It's interesting how photographs affect our memory. This was the only time I went for a photo walk by these ponds. I don't remember anything else about that morning. I remember meeting the bird, and how it stood and let me photograph it (2/5). I don't rmember it taking flight (3/5). What a breathtaking photo op that was! And I don't remember following it and taking more photos. From the image when I first spotted the heron to the last frame, the encounter lasted from 7:51 to 8:17.

In the last three frames, the bird is standing at the bottom of a bank just steps from York Road, a busy Guelph artery. Other frames show heavy trucks and thick commuter traffic whizzing just above the bird's head. I'd feel unnerved to stand there, but the heron keeps fishing and pays no attention. They say photography does not lie, but in fact it can be thoroughly misleading. In frames 4 and 5 I chose to focus on the bird, cutting out the view above. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking I took the photos in a wildlife preserve. At the last moment before posting to Flickr I decided to include frame 6, revealing the truth. Humanity and nature are inseparable, no matter how much anyone tries to separate them.

I'm sorting old photos and posting a few interesting ones. This image was uploaded to Flickr on Mar. 21, 2022.

One of my contacts/friends Nathan - his website - pwtphotography.com/ - knows I've been searching unsuccessfully for a snowy owl all winter. I think he felt sorry for me - LOL! He contacted me last night to tell me about a Great Horned Owl that was roosting on the exact same tree as last winter when he first located him. He gave me blow by blow instructions to get to his tree in Barrie. It was cloudy but I thought I would quickly check it out to see if I could locate the owl. We found the path and when we were close to the bottom of the hill - man servant turns to me and asks "Did you bring the instructions" I didn't and I ask everyone "What the heck is a man servant for if not to remember things like that"!! Just then, we heard someone behind us - what great timing - Nathan was just heading down to see if the owl was still there - so he led me right to this beautiful raptor. We stood under the tree chatting and taking pix and the owl would look at us every once in a while. He even moved to the open (see next pix) when he spotted a squirrel. ISO very high because it was dark - but so what WHO cares!! Didn't stay too long because I didn't want to stress the owl out - didn't seem to but WHO knows! Thank you Nathan for sharing this wonderful find.

By XPan II 30/5.6, Jun 2015. The Potala Palace (Tibetan: ཕོ་བྲང་པོ་ཏ་ལ་, Wylie: pho brang Potala) in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, China was the residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. It is now a museum and World Heritage Site.

The palace is named after Mount Potalaka, the mythical abode of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. The 5th Dalai Lama started its construction in 1645 after one of his spiritual advisers, Konchog Chophel (died 1646), pointed out that the site was ideal as a seat of government, situated as it is between Drepung and Sera monasteries and the old city of Lhasa. It may overlay the remains of an earlier fortress called the White or Red Palace on the site, built by Songtsen Gampo in 637.

The building measures 400 metres (1,300 ft) east-west and 350 metres (1,150 ft) north-south, with sloping stone walls averaging 3 metres (9.8 ft) thick, and 5 metres (16 ft) thick at the base, and with copper poured into the foundations to help proof it against earthquakes. Thirteen storeys of buildings, containing over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues, soar 117 metres (384 ft) on top of Marpo Ri, the "Red Hill", rising more than 300 metres (980 ft) in total above the valley floor.

Former Philadelphia & Western Strafford Car 162, in service on the SEPTA Norristown High Speed Line, 5/6/89. Built by Brill in 1927, the Strafford cars preceded the arrival of the famed "Bullet" cars on the P&W, which came five years later. Amazingly this one was still in daily service in 1989, and in the old PST colors no less.

Today this car is at the Rockhill Trolley Museum in Orbisonia PA. More on the history of these cars can be found here: www.phillytrolley.org/strafford.html

Part of the library in the British Ambassador's residence in Moscow. Not as strong an image as I hoped as I had to correct for lens distortion, having only one lens on me during the visit - no tripod with me either. I may revisit the photo in future, but it suffers from lens distortion correction in Elements.
