Little Pied Cormorant

Scientific Name: Microcarbo melanoleucos

Description: The Little Pied Cormorant is one of the most common of Australia's waterbirds, occurring on water bodies of almost any size. It is entirely black above and white below. The face is dusky and, in adult birds, the white of the underside extends to above the eye. Immature birds resemble the adults except there is no white above the eye.

Similar species: The Little Pied Cormorant resembles the Pied Cormorant,Phalacrocorax varius, but is easily distinguished by its smaller size and proportionately shorter bill The Pied Cormorant also has an orange-yellow face patch and black thighs.

Distribution: The Little Pied Cormorant is found throughout Australia.

Habitat: The Little Pied Cormorant is at home in either fresh or salt water. It is often seen in large flocks on open waterways and on the coast, especially where large numbers of fish are present. On inland streams and dams, however, it is often solitary. The Little Pied Cormorant mixes readily with the similar sized Little Black Cormorant, P. sulcirostris.

Feeding: Little Pied Cormorants feed on a wide variety of aquatic animals, from insects to fish. On inland streams and dams they turn to their most favoured food: yabbies (freshwater crayfish). These are caught by deep underwater dives with both feet kicking outward in unison. Other crustaceans are also taken, with shrimps being a large part of their diet in winter months.

Breeding: Little Pied Cormorants breed either in colonies or, less commonly, in single pairs. The nest is a flat platform of sticks, lined with green leaves and is usually placed in a tree. Both adults share in egg incubation and care of the young.

Minimum Size: 50cm

Maximum Size: 66cm

Average size: 58cm

Clutch Size: 3 to 4

The ornate building on the left was built between the two wars - it appears to have been a church for a short time but maps from the 1950s onwards show it as being used as a warehouse.

First try with Fuji instant film lift. Not easy but I've heard it is more difficult with this film especially when it's older. An interesting effect nonetheless. Maybe I'll revisit some instructional videos on YT to see where or how I could have done better 5.6.25

Saw these flowers that had fallen in the grounds of the local library and took Dasher back for an early Saturday morning shoot. He was very happy to sniff around and check out the place. He got a little dirty, but for him it was all part of the fun. He likes a good photo outing.

I have a few shots from this shoot that I like, but this is the one I like the most amongst all the pink and the soft light and shadows.

Hope you like it too.

Happy Sunday when you get there ;) Car x

Camilla drove Izzy to the airport, trying not to get too emotional.

Camilla: I have talked to my cousin Camille and she will pick you up when you land. Or she might send a Barbie to get you.

Izzy: Awesome! ..... Is Camille as kind as you?

Camilla: Oh dearie she's even nicer. You will be taken good care of by everybody. I hear there's even a Poppy who's nice and has teatime coffee with a Sindy.

Izzy: Will they pull my hair? Like... like that other Sindy?*

Camilla: No one will pull your hair dear. Now, remember to give the letter I wrote and the gift to a Barbie and the other box to Camille or any other Sindy.

Izzy: Box the letter and give a gift to Sindy. Got it.

Camilla: Right.. (I'm sure they will figure it out when they read my instructions.)

Fotografieren erfordert Genehmigungen ...

Quite possibly my favorite moment of the day, I don't recall ever catching the "Reflection Pass" before and I almost missed it again this year. It was one of the final maneuvers of the day and I had suspected the show might already be over when they flew by with this amazing stunt ...

I came across these ladybugs one evening mating in the fennel. No doubt an early summer romance. The sun had just set, and everything was just perfect for their rendezvous. Then, I came along with my camera. :) It seems that the ladybugs like to retire for the night in the fennel and dill for added protection. Usually, they are not disturbed. The photo was taken in June 2020, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy and stay well.

After two weeks of rain and me almost giving up on being able to see this yearly spectacle, finally there was some sun. I got out of work early and hiked up to Mt. Heuberg, where it all happens in early spring, depending on how fast the snow melts and how warm it is.

The Andaman nightjar (Caprimulgus andamanicus) is a species of nightjar found in the Andaman Islands, India.

The species is found in most of the islands in the Andamans and calls suggest it may be possible in the Narcondam Island as well. It is said to be common in teak forest and open country with scattered trees. This bird is endemic to these islands only.

Bought a stencil because I just love a perfect circle.

I did go back and decipher the code and rather than a fraction, it is just indicating the hexagon surrounding the 34mm diameter circle has 6 sides.

But as I know you all like a little bit of intrigue, I left the title as it was. 34/5=5.66666666...
