合歡山為一般大眾的稱呼,其實上了合歡山,看到的就是整個合歡群峰,包括合歡主峰,合歡東峰,合歡西峰與合歡北峰,還可看到近在咫尺的奇萊主峰及北峰,合歡山的一年四季皆甚為美麗,4-5月有盛開的玉山杜鵑,5-6月有紅毛杜鵑,盛夏有滿山小草花,有阿里山龍膽,玉山龍膽,台灣野百合,高山沙蔘,玉山薄雪草等等不勝枚舉,秋天有美麗的高山芒花,冬天呢?由於合歡群峰位於中央山脈主稜線的轉折處,匯聚了蘭陽溪及立霧溪的水氣,一但寒流來襲,由於豐沛的水氣提供有利條件,往往白雪紛飛彷彿到了北國世界,合歡雪景是身處亞熱帶的台灣最佳賞雪處,交通便利,景色優美,所以一到冬季,合歡雪景是大家引頸企盼的.

Birthday gift from my parents. Practicing (ad nauseum) on cedar boards that will eventually be door casings and baseboards for my entire house.
Other than the expensive and bulky combination of a thickness planer and a jointer, with an accompanying logistically laborious 32 total feet of infeed / outfeed setup and tear-down to accommodate these 16ft boards, I can't think of another tool that will do this job this well.
A power sander would round off my edges, mash hard-to-remove dust deep into the grain, require a dust mask, be loud and annoying, and leave me coated in powder ... whereas with the bench plane I'm creating a clean, glossy surface with zero dust production, and I can do it with minimal noise, minimal hassle, no power cables and no clamps -- just the weight of my body sitting on the board.
Plus I'm building muscle and learning a skill that has been practiced for literally thousands of years.
