Earlier this morning my friend,[https://www.flickr.com/photos/91431315@N07] , posted a nice Christmasy shot of Amtrak 49 in Vermillion from back in 1977. www.flickr.com/photos/91431315@N07/54226177933
We spent a lot of weekend time railfanning together back in those years and I couldn\'t remember why I wouldn\'t also have that shot. Then I remembered that I was on a second section of 49 that day coming home from New Year\'s Eve in Times Square. One friend lived in Syracuse and we took an Empire Service train to there and then the conductor on 49 wouldn\'t let me board the first section that the station agent had told me to do (no room). I didn\'t know there was a second section at the time but they had kept the Boston section separate in Albany and ran it behind the late first section all the way to Chicago. There were no seats on the second section either but I rode in the closed lounge. In Cleveland I jumped off first and quickly drove across the river to the closed-for-winter Ore Dock tower for this shot of the train departing. Ore Dock tower was several stories tall with an open frame that had an exposed staircase. It was always closed in winter and the only challenge to use the stair case was not being called in by the Drawbridge tower operator. The wasteland behind the train is now the very nice county-maintained Wendy Park

Abellio London 2469 (SN64OET) passes the Westfield White City shopping centre on a 49 service to Clapham Junction.
49 years later .... Same place, same photo. Grindelwald in Switzerland is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Switzerland. The photograph was taken at the exact same place as 49 years ago (July 1967) Many open spaces are now built over with houses and hotels. Some of the old trains of that time are still on the road.
49 Jahre später.... Gleicher Ort, gleiches Foto. Grindelwald in der Schweiz ist einer der bekanntesten Tourismusziele in der Schweiz. Das Foto wurde an der exakt gleichen Stelle aufgenommen, wie vor 49 Jahren (Juli 1967) Viele freien Flächen sind inzwischen zugebaut mit Häusern und Hotels. Einige der alten Eisenbahnzüge von damals sind heute noch unterwegs.
