Theme: Seven Deadly Sins
Envy - I believe my cat, which happens to be an indoor cat, is envious of the outdoor cats, he sometimes sits in the window sill for long periods of time looking outside, most likely wishing he could go outdoors, mark his territory, and hunt for wildlife, and after catching a bird, rodent, or lizard, in gratitude for me feeding and taking care of him, he would bring the half eaten remains to my home, which is why he is an indoor cat.
Well, I got my results for the semester back today… my exam went well and my dissertation went better, so I may or may not have bought myself a present…

We had a good day today! I was able to have coffee with a student and lunch with a friend, and then Kelsey and I finished up our gift certificate at our local Thai restaurant and went grocery shopping. It was a good cheery day.
I figured I'd try a self portrait for once! Pretty much every day after work for the past week, I've been taking a nap. Something tells me I need to improve my sleep schedule a little bit.
I also tried using Lightroom again tonight. I'd used it previously, but my needed to up the RAM in my computer for it to work properly. Now I've got 8gb and it works like a champ. Utilizes my multi-monitor setup pretty nice too!

Danbury St area, Islington, 1979

Another picture from my wander around Islington, probably on a Sunday morning, when I would often catch the first train (at around 8am) and spend the day taking pictures. I had a list of themes that I wanted to explore but no planned route and wandered as the muse took me until I was too tired to walk much further, perhaps ten miles and seven hours later, when I made my way more directly back to my starting point. This would have been a British Rail station (in this case on the North London Line) to which I could buy a return ticket from my home as transport in London was then uncoordinated and journeys on the Underground and buses would have involved separate tickets before the Travelcard era. Some of the pictures from these walks (but not this) are included in my 'London dérives 1975-83' published as PDF (and book) on Blurb.
Fortunino Matania R.I. (1881-1963) was an Italian artist perhaps best known for his realistic images of trench warfare as a war artist in the First World War, but he also illustrated every British Coronation from that of Edward VII in 1902 to Elizabeth II in 1953. Most of his working life was spent in the UK, and there were 19 years of illustrations for the long-forgotten British women's magazine, Britannia and Eve, most of which featured at least on voluptuous nudes as well as a huge amount of advertising work, including the illustration for Blackpool which appears twice in this shop window (and he also did one for Southport.)
As the logo at bottom right of the poster indicates this was for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (and not the LNER as Wikipedia states, as they ran their trains up the East Coast mainline.) The posters also carried the arms of Blackpool at the bottom right and - as can be seen, gave major billing to the artist. Those produced by other artists for the LNER, though very well-known images, were generally unattributed.
The original painting for the poster is I think in the National Railway Museum, and high quality prints can still be obtained relatively cheaply - an A1 poster for £19.99. The original posters with their rather inferior lithographic printing sell for thousands.
I'm not sure whether this was one of Islington's many junk or antique shops, or perhaps a hairdressers, or was now in use as a private residence, with the print and the rug or animal skin hanging to block the view. Corner shops were often cheaper to buy and live in because it was difficult to get planning permission for the change of use.

04/4/07 : i've felt like poo today with hayfever and an argument at work. mainly the hayfever though. i decided to take a nice hot bubble bath to help clear my head. it did the trick too. partly thanks to the delicious smell - i found half of a candy cane bubble bar lurking in the bottom of my lush stash box. anyway, a hot bubblicious bath with lots of tea lights does wonders for a girl. if you could see my face behind the camera (look at the reflection in the plug release) you'd even see a little smile.
