This is the dot on the map with the word Katum next to it. A mile and a half from the Cambodian border. No village, town or people (except NVA). Just a bridge over the Prek Klok river, in the middle of miles of triple canopy jungle, bamboo and teak forests. Katum base camp was up the road at the Cambodian border. The NVA blew up this bridge and one before it. The engineers had to bring in a portable AVLB bridge every day and take it away in the evening. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

1967/01/11, We are on our way to Vietnam. John Erdman was a friend from Ft. Jackson, SC, where we took our infantry AIT training.

On our way to the Trang Bang/Angel's Wing area to secure Rome Plow operations. Oct. 31, '67, a 3rd platoon track was hit by a command detonated road mine and five Bobcats were KIA. Ralph J. 1967/02, Operation Gadsen— All of the Manchus were involved in this operation. We were waiting for the air lift to the border.

Getting ready to in for a search and destroy mission. Much of this area had been defoliated. Agent Orange? I wonder how much of that dust we ate! Unknown to us at this time, the NVA were coming through this area from the Ho Chi Minh Trails in Cambodia a few miles away, on their way to Saigon for the Tet offensive. Came back to Cu Chi base camp for a 5 day medical leave from katum. I was glad to be back in a relatively "safe" place. The next day these buildings were gone, blown away. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

1967/01/11, 90th Replacement Center. The bunker where I pulled bunker guard the first night. As I remember, we had M14s, 200 rounds of ammo and a phone to contact headquarters. They obviously weren’t expecting trouble.

That's John (Mike) Massey's white butt. Somewhere between Prek Klok and Katum. This is a lot riskier than it looks. You never knew if "Charlie" was in the jungle watching. I guess we thought it was worth the risk when you haven't had a bath in several weeks. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

U.S. Army Sgt. Zachary Cook, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division infantryman, coordinates a movement plan with a New Zealand Defence Force soldier, 1st New Zealand Brigade, during Exercise Kiwi Koru Nov. 14, 2014, outside of Whangamomona, New Zealand. Exercise Kiwi Koru training elements included combat lifesaver training, Law of Armed Conflict scenarios, counter improvised explosive device training and a force-on-force tactical exercise. Approximately 60 Soldiers from the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks and 40 Marines from I Marine Expeditionary Force trained alongside approximately 600 New Zealand Defence Force soldiers from the 1st New Zealand Brigade. The bilateral training is designed to improve the readiness and resilience of both forces. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Christopher Hubenthal)

1967/01, Ben Chan in the delta. My first trip to the field. We were running Eagle flights and one day operations in swamps and rice paddies from this base for several weeks.

1967/02, Cu Chi—We were held up in the village of Cu Chi for some reason. I believe Sgt. Battle is in the foreground.

1967/01, Ben Chan in the delta. This was the Charlie company 81 mortar setup, but we only used the 60 mm mortars for sweeps and one day operations, while I stayed in the camp.

This is how we spent our days. Bobcats on a sweep heading into the jungle for a Search & Destroy, looking for VC / NVA. Never knew what was in the jungle until we got there. I was manning the .50 cal. that day when I snapped this shot. This is the way to be spread out. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

Christmas day, Katum base camp. We had the day off, but had LP, bush and perimeter guard that night. Bob Hope didn't show up. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

1/5 Inf was just above the pin and across the road. The old air strip and perimeter road are about all that's left. It's now a Vietnamese Army Post. Picture from the internet.

In a very lonely place. Road mines, snipers and RPG's. We patrolled this road and went on S&Ds here during the day, and had ambush patrols along the road and in the surrounding triple canopy jungle at night. This road led to our base camp at the Cambodian border. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

From ambush patrol the night before. The bamboo mat was my "bed". We weren't allowed to keep captured weapons. Had to turn them in for the "count". Any guesses where they ended up? Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

1967/01, location: Pineapple Plantations—The first half of our group is loading up to leave. Shortly after this photo was taken, a gunship fired on us with two rockets and a machine gun as we moved out of the brush and into the clearing. They were not notified that there was a second pickup. Fortunately, no one was hit.

1967/02, Cu Chi area — Prisoners caught hiding in wells during a sweep of the area. They didn’t have IDs.

Alpha Co. mess hall, 1/5 Inf (Mech), 25th Inf. Early in the morning of 2 Feb. '68, almost every building of the 1/5 Bobcats was destroyed or damaged by 122MM rockets and 82mm mortars, and when the ammo dump behind us took a direct hit, the explosion was deafening, shook the earth and sent a huge fire ball into the air. That sent artillery rounds, mortars, grenades and bullets flying, setting off many secondary explosions in the area. The shock wave from the blast tore down even more buildings. Most Bobcats were out in the field or there would have been many more casualties. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

A Royal New Zealand Air Force NH90 takes off after dropping off New Zealand Defense Force soldiers in preparation to receive artillery as part of Exercise Kiwi Koru Nov. 14, 2014, outside of Whangamonona, New Zealand. Exercise Kiwi Koru is designed to enhance defense relations between the United States and New Zealand, advance interoperability between U.S. and New Zealand forces and increase the readiness of both militaries to respond to regional crises. Another example of my flawless timing. Not much left after a mortar and rocket attack that morning. The ammo dump behind the 1/5 Inf. Bobcats took a direct hit and the explosion and concussion from the blast leveled the place in one huge deafening blast and fire ball. Couldn't stay here, didn't want to go back to Katum with my arm in a sling. I still had three days medical leave, so I hitched a ride on a huey to Long Binh to visit a good friend stationed there in the artillery. Because of all the confusion of Tet, no one missed me and no one at Long Binh quetioned why I was there. I was lucky I got away with it. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

1967/01, location: Pineapple Plantations—Fresh B52 strike zone below. We are leaving after sweeping the bombed area all day. We watched the air strike that morning and it was very impressive to watch, even from a distance.

4th squad, 3rd platoon, Samuel Linville (KIA), Sgt Sell, and Donald Mousseau (WIA). Sam was later KIA, and Don was WIA. Sgt Sell made it home the next month. In the two weeks before Christmas, nine 3rd platoon guys were WIA and gone from Katum with no replacements. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).
