1967/10, Operation Barking Sands, Ho Bo Woods — A fresh 1000 lb. bomb crater in the middle of camp. The water was cool, but we got covered with mud climbing out. From left to right, Ed Episcopo, Pete Condell and Prince Jones. I believe the platoon member in back is Nelson. The Ho Bo woods was a free fire zone, so aircraft often dumped left over ordenance on it. The Ho Bo was full of tunnels and it was use as a stageing area and VC supply routes passed through it.
This is an oldie. I'm pretty sure it was September of 1970.
I had been in Cu Chi for a short while.
My job was to get some coverage for the battalion in the Stars and Stripes.
So, I hung around the aircraft hanger a lot.
I loved the light coming in those huge doors.
I had just gotten my 105 for the Pentax and I had some fresh generic
ISO 400 Dupont film. D-76 of course.
This fellow was an Avionics technician. He asked me to do a portrait to send back home (St. Louis).
I made a print for him and another to exhibit after I returned.
My print was stolen from that exhibit.
Do enjoy Friday!

Unknown to me when I shot this. After some research, I was amazed to find this: Reno Air Races crash September 16, 2011 sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2011/09/27/vintage-helicopter-c... (CBS 5) – In the moments after the September 16th Reno air race crash, a group of men who were uniquely qualified to help leapt into action. Pilot Ray Murphy’s been flying since 1966, including two tours in Vietnam. He’s part of a team based out of Concord’s Buchanan Air Field that were at the Reno Air Races with their vintage Huey on display when they heard the crash.
Within minutes the Murphy and fellow pilot Brent Marker were in motion-transporting crash victims to a park across from the hospital. “Someone requested ‘can you help?’ recalled helicopter co-owner Chris Miller. “Basically, our team jumped into action. We got the wheels on the helicopter. The group that was next to us came over and helped everyone push it out onto the tarmac. They pushed this 6,000 lb. aircraft up a slope.”
To make room for passengers they had to remove seats. Everyone the team transported survived. The other day Ray got a call from one of them. “He called to thank me for taking him to the hospital. And to me that was very rewarding,” said Murphy.
