The guy who drove the AVLB bridge carrier was KIA by an RPG decapitating him. We carried his body on track 33 for the rest of the day until we got back to Katum base camp where he could be dusted off. This was the only way in or out of Katum by that road. Engineers of the 65th Engineers set it up in the morning and took it away in the evening. The original bridge was destroyed by the NVA. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).
1967/07, Camp Caroline near Trang Bang — Shelby on check point. We always had two people on check point. We sometimes gave Sundry pack candy to the kids, so we got along well with them. The parents avoided us as much as possible and the water bufflalo would get really upset, if we got too close to them.
1967/03, South of Cu Chi— We usually slept on the ground. At this camp, we would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with a snake crawling over us.
It later collapsed from a nearby air strike. The rats in there were as big as cats. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

North-west side of the mountain. We had the top and bottom (during the day), Charlie had everything in between. The 125th signal battalion, 25th Inf Div, and others were on the top, many lost their lives up there. My company was at the bottom. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

Picture taken Dec. 1967 at Katum base camp. Raul was 21. He is survived by his wife, Wanda, and his daughter Tammy who was born while we were at Katum. Raul was the quiet type, we all liked him. He was killed at the Fil Hol Plantation in Binh Duong Province along with two other Bobcats. 23 other Bobcats were WIA. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).
Lone Bobcat in the ruins. 1/5 Inf, Bravo Co. hootches behind him. Early in the morning of 2 Feb. '68, almost every building of the 1/5 Bobcats was destroyed or damaged by 122MM rockets and 82mm mortars, and when the ammo dump behind us took a direct hit, the explosion was deafening, shook the earth and sent a huge fire ball into the air. That sent artillery rounds, mortars, grenades and bullets flying, setting off many secondary explosions in the area. The shock wave from the blast tore down even more buildings. Most Bobcats were out in the field or there would have been many more casualties. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

1967/10, Operation Barking Sands, Ho Bo Woods — The final march to Cu Chi in heavy rain. A long and costly operation finally ends. The 25th Division band played as we tried to march by with heavy equipment and tired legs. It all seemed a bit surreal. I’m not sure of the names, but I think Alverez is in the bottom left and Sgt. Seiber is center with the aiming circle. Lt. Miller is probably just to Seiber’s right. Lt. Miller was killed a month or so later in the Katum area on Operation Yellowstone. Alverez was killed on Mar. 2, 1968 in an ambush at Hoc Mon.
Tanks in the Vietnam sunset. It could be deceptively peaceful at times. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).
1967/08, Camp Caroline near Trang Bang — A typical formation of double columns. We kept wide intervals in open areas like this. We would tighten up the formation in wooded areas.
1967/10, Operation Barking Sands, Ho Bo Woods — Weapons platoon returning to the Ho Bo after a one day break. We used the portable 60 mm mortars for the rest of the Barking Sands operation. We are loading on a Chinook in Cu Chi. A 60 mm team was attached to each line platoon on sweeps.
1967/05, Trang Bang area— A camp somewhere in the Trang Bang area around the time of operation Manhattan . My camera was damaged during a 10 day Pineapple Plantations operation. I was unable to get back to Cu Chi to get another camera until May, so there are no photos from April. 1967.

1967/07, Camp Caroline near Trang Bang — VC were spotted planting mines near Caroline. Weapons platoon was sent out to locate and destroy the mines with C4. We took 40 lbs. of C4 with us and used a lot of it that day. Some of the mines were planted close to the villagers homes. A 12 year old girl was brought to us one day after stepping on one of the VC mines. It had blown both of her legs off. She was still alive when she was evacuated to Cu Chi.

1967/07, Camp Caroline near Trang Bang — Choppers are coming in to pick up C company for an air assault.
Nice paint job Chuck. That camo face paint made us INVISIBLE at night!!....... Washington to his right. We, Chuck, Phil McFarland, Witherspoon and I, went on night ambush patrol for 30 nights in a row at this time. Our CO wanted body count! Chuck was WIA April 25, 1968. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).
1967 Dec. Bush masters — We were waiting for a lift to the border for a bush master OP. We hid by large trails, in the jungle and watched the traffic. Ox carts moving down the trails sometimes passed within a few feet of us after dark. We were out of range of artillery support and we were told to only watch and not to make contact, since it would be near impossible to extract us from that area. This photo was taken just outside the 1st brigade base camp at Tay Ninh.

1967/06, Camp Caroline near Trang Bang — Prince Jones and Bobby Mathis. The camp was almost completed at this point. We filled thousands of sand bags for weeks. Some of the local kids would stop by to help and they would sometimes point to the woods and say 'beaucoup VC Joe!'. The adults avoided the camp entirely.
