Waiting for the mine sweepers to detonate a road mine ahead of us. The NVA would put mines in the road at different locations almost every night. In front: Donald Mousseau (WIA) left & Terry Brady (WIA) right. We were dropped off on the road in the morning, went about 100 meters into the bush or jungle, alone, left there all day and picked up in the evening and taken back to Katum base camp to go on bush or LP. Being out there alone with my M16, I used of think about what I would do if a bunch of "Charlies" came up on me. Surrender? Go down in a hale of bullets? Shoot myself? Not too many options. Not a lot of fun!

1967/03, South of Cu Chi— Ed Episcopo after returning from an Easter night operation. C and I believe A company moved about 4,000 meters at night to a VC controlled village. The village was sealed and weapons platoon searched the village. We removed our rifle slings, used green tape to tape anything that would make noise, made sure our canteens were full, so they wouldn't swish and burned wood for charcoal to darken faces and hands. We surrounded the village at about 2:00 am and started the search at daylight. We found weapons hidden in hay stacks and in rice storage units. There was some sniper fire as we moved in, and the rest of the day was pretty uneventful.

This Huey served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division.

We were ambushed by the NVA and pinned down outside of Trang Bang near Trung Lap. Our Company commander, Cpt. Hoop, was KIA. Twenty Bobcats WIA, fourteen dusted-off. I was one of the fourteen. Our base camp was a few miles up the road near the Cambodian border. Guarding the bridge for the supply trucks bringing in the C rations, beer, water, ammo, mail and the "goodie boxs" with cigs, and candy to Katum base camp. This bridge was destroyed by the NVA and the engineers had to bring in a portable AVLB bridge every morning and take it away in the evening. The wreckage of a previous bridge is off to the right. This bridge was the only way in or out of Katum by road. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

Early morning road patrol. We walked for hours on this road and in the surrounding jungle many days looking for "Charlie", and securing the road for the supply trucks. Pulled night ambush patrols off the road. The NVA planted mines on the road at night, usually made from our unexploded artillery rounds. Had some bad times on that road when he found us. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey9yDSZ6wCA Think about this CCR song every time I see this pic. Photo by Frank Thomas Goins (Tom).

1967/10, Operation Barking Sands, Ho Bo Woods — We were digging in for the night after moving into an abandoned VC camp on a small hill. We noticed this tunnel entrance only a few feet from our foxhole. This may have been used as an escape tunnel, since it didn't appear to have been used for a while. There were fresh trenches dug in the camp also. During the first mortar attack at this camp, it appeared that the VC 82mm mortars were zeroed in on the trenches. Some of our guys were killed or wounded when they tried to take cover in the trenches. Ed Episcopo.
