BIG ISLAND, Hawaii (Nov. 12, 2019) - Twenty helicopters from 25th Combat Aviation Brigade traveled 200 miles to provided troop lift capability to air assault the Gimlets of 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division from Wheeler Army Airfield to Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on Big Island of Hawaii, Nov. 12. CH-47 Chinook helicopters assigned to the Hillclimbers of 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment along with UH-60 Blackhawks assigned to 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment were used in the execution of this large muscle movement to move Soldiers and equipment intra-island for the upcoming exercise. Gary, Rich Purkis, Mike Massey and I were the only guys from 3rd platoon in Cu Chi base camp from Katum at the time. We were in a bunker together with a couple others when the place was blown up. Rich and Gary were at Cu Chi recovering from wounds after hitting a road mine on track 34 on Dec. 17, 1967. Mike was there recovering from wounds after track 33 which he was driving hit a land mine on Dec. 22, 1967. I was there for minor wrist surgery. Stryker vehicles from the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division cross Jarvis Creek in the Donnelly Training Area Oct. 19, 2018, during Arctic Anvil 19-01. Arctic Anvil is a joint, multi-national, force-on-force training exercise designed to provide the 1st Stryker Brigade, 25th Infantry Division a tough, realistic training event that validates their ability to fight and win as a combined arms team in preparation for their rotation at the Army's National Training Center in California early next year. Other participants include the Alaska National Guard, the U.S. Air Force, and a company of Canadian soldiers from 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Rich was in Cu Chi base camp recovering, after being wounded at Katum when track 34 he was driving hit a road mine in Dec. 1967. He and a couple of other Bobcats, were reassigned to C Co., 4/9 Manchus in March 1968 after the Manchus had 49 KIAs and 24 WIA's at the Hoc Mon Bridge. Pic courtesy of good friend Rich Purkis.
