Heritage home at 24 Circular Road, St. John's, Newfoundland.
24 Circular Road is a two-and-one-half storey, wooden dwelling built in the Queen Anne Revival style of architecture. Surrounded by mature trees it overlooks Rennie’s Mill Valley at the rear, and historic Circular Road at the front. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.
Heritage Value
24 Circular Road has been designated a Municipal Heritage Building for its aesthetic and historical values.
24 Circular Road is aesthetically valuable because it is a good example of the Queen Anne Revival style of architecture. Painted in a traditional yellow ochre, this dwelling house has many elements of this style. The overall shape of 24 Circular Road is typically Queen Anne Revival with the use of varying roof forms and a corner turret. As well, an open, covered verandah wraps around the house and it has decorative support columns. Details such as the dentils, palladian window, stained glass windows and narrow, wooden clapboard add interest to this merchant-class home.
24 Circular Road is historically valuable because of its associations with two prominant Newfoundlanders, George W.B Ayre (1879-1945) and Hazen A. Russell (1892- 1983). This residence was the home of George W.B. Ayre, a lawyer who played a prominent role in the development of amateur sports in Newfoundland. He was the founder of the Newfoundland Amateur Athletic Association, May 27, 1921.
Hazen A. Russell played an important role in the innovation of the Newfoundland fishing industry. While managing the Fisherman’s Union Trading Company for William F. Coaker, he was the first to pay fisherman cash for their catch. While he was a director at Job Brothers, he campaigned for fresh-frozen processing of fish. Later, as owner of Bonavista Cold Storage Ltd. he introduced the first stern trawler to the fishery.

The wonderful old Marugen 24 building, sitting on one of the back streets in the ultra modern, rich Ginza district of Tokyo, is a wonderful post-war building. It is a reminder of another era, when Japan's economy was booming and back-alley bars and exclusive clubs were springing up left and right.
Nowadays, just up the main street you have glitzy shops selling brand name watches, bags and clothing - people come to shop and be seen.
But Ginza also has another side, a place to get away from the business world of Tokyo and the masses of shoppers just around the corner. Sip a cocktail and have a cigarette in a dark room, listening to Jazz on an old record player. Slide into one of the cozy rooms of the Marugen and it's like you've slid back in time 40 years.

Went over to Liverpool Street at lunch today, trying to get a photo for work, but couldn't find the thing I was looking for. I did however buy a nice scarf in the sale in Accessorise, and found this new building thingy going up at the edge of Broadgate Circle. Also phoned my Mum, who was sounding OK, though a bit flat bless her.
Busy day at work, with my annual catch-up with the boss, a meeting with a colleague about a presentation we're putting together, and a catch-up with my manager. Got some work done in there somewhere too.
Tim was still off sick today, but ended up having to log in and work this afternoon. Think he's mostly on the mend. Baked potatoes for tea will have helped, I'm sure :)

This small ladybird has a very long name (Subcoccinella vigintiquattuorpunctata). Unlike other ladybirds it is a vegetarian and eats grass and weeds rather than aphids. It is unlikely to fly away home because they seldom have wings. The hairy orange wing cases have 24 spots on them although the number can vary from 0 to 26!
These are the crew members of a Norwegian vessel, who survived what is known as the Fethard Lifeboat Disaster.
These men were on board their vessel, The Mexico (with its cargo of mahogany and cedar from Mexico), when it ran aground on the Keragh Islands, Co. Wexford on Friday, 20 February 1914. The Fethard Lifeboat, Helen Blake, came to their rescue through a storm was destroyed with the loss of 9 of the 14 lifeboatmen.
For those of you wanting to know more about this disaster, Niall McAuley provided a link to this PDF recounting the whole story, and a tentative identification of the older sailor in the middle as the captain of The Mexico, Ole Edvin Eriksen, of Frederikshald, Norway...
Fairly happy now that this photo was taken at Waterford, thanks to John Spooner's contribution from a report in The Times of 24 February that said:
"The tug with the nine men on board and the body of the man who had died on the island arrived at Waterford at 4 o'clock. A great crowd assembled on the quays to welcome the rescuers."
