The engineless derelict remains of a Fowler 0-4-0 diesel hydraulic in the sidings at Pitsford on the Northampton and Lamport Railway, 4th April 2017.

Locomotive History

This locomotive was built by John Fowler, Leeds in 1953 (Works No. 4210094) as a diesel mechanical locomotive for use at the Hartlepool Steel Works. In 1966 it was rebuilt by Fowler as a diesel hydraulic. It was withdrawn in 1972 and spent the next twenty seven years on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway before moving to the Northampton and Lamport Railway in 1999. Apparently a replacement engine has been purchased for this locomotive.

Quante vite viviamo? Quanto valgono 21 grammi? (Paul Rivers).

I decided to go for a nice long walk this morning, just after breakfast. It was pretty cold when I set off but when I was making my way back home it began to rain, then it hailed and finally I got the snow ~ all just over the hill that sits in front of me!

This was such a pleasant surprise, it's actually been years since I've seen a pre-facelift 21 in the UK, even in France they seem to be elusive. I really like the look of these. This one has the appearance of a car that's led a hard life, it looks a little bashed around but nothing too serious. I like the fact it retains those wheeltrims, but the mirrors are a bit of a mystery to me- both sides?! They do look like proper 21 Mirrors, but both are in a shade of red, which doesn't fit at all with this car! I was so pleased to see a saloon 21 too, they seem to be the rarest of the 21 body shapes over here.

One of just 4 licenced on the roads, and is the only 1988 car.

I went to take a look at the Mae Khon dam this morning wondering if the current low cloud might hang low enough to give an otherwise boring construction a little character with the beautiful mountain just behind it. Well, you can probably work out the answer by now..

On Boxing Day of 2016, Go North East operated an extension of the 21 to Bishop Auckland, in a similar fashion to the former Sunday operation that saw a Hybrid operate the X21 between Durham and Bishop Auckland every hour. 6060 (NK62 CFN) is seen sitting in Eldon Square Bus Station, laying over at the set-down stand.

Hannah plays the 21" Pickerel as Truff looks down the hole to see what comes out of it. There is nothing as fun in fishing as hand over hand combat, trying to tire out a fish so that you can get it on the ice. We have taken as long as 15 minutes to get a big pike or trout in. Pickerel generally make a half dozen good runs before you can work them into the hole.

52 Weeks Project

Nescio and the Nescio Bridge are connected to the city of Amsterdam...a weekly selfie dedicated to both!

Location: Westerlijke Merwedekanaaldijk in Amsterdam.

Coordinates: 52°21'21" N 4°58'7" E

Reason: This single cable suspension bridge is close to my home and never was the subject of one of my '52-Weeks' project before. A quite young bridge named after a remarkable Dutch writer.

Nescio Bridge: The Nescio Bridge (or Nesciobrug in Dutch) is an award-winning cycle and footbridge in the Netherlands. This curved, steel suspension bridge, located in Amsterdam, is the country's first suspension bridge that carries only a cycle track and footway, and at almost 800 metres length it is also one of the country's longest cycle and footbridges. Additionally, it is the longest single cable suspension bridge in the Netherlands.

The bridge was designed by Jim Eyre of London-based Wilkinson Eyre Architects, in cooperation with two multinational engineering consultancy firms: London-based ARUP group and Netherlands-based Grontmij. The design stands out by using a single, self-anchored cable.

Facts & Figures:

Total length: 780 m

Opened: 7 June 2006 for cyclists

ID number: Amsterdam bridge № 2013

Longest span: 163.5 m

Clearance below: 10 m

Constructed by: VolkerWessels

Architect: Wilkinson Eyre Architects

Nescio: "Nescio", Latin for "I don't know", was the pen name of Dutch writer Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh, who was born on June 22, 1882, in Amsterdam and died on July 25, 1961, in Hilversum, also in the Netherlands. Grönloh was a businessman by profession, but as Nescio he is mainly remembered for the three novellas De uitvreter (The Freeloader), Titaantjes (Little Titans) and Dichtertje (Little Poet). His reputation as an important Dutch writer was only established after his death. [ Wikipedia ]
