Macro shot of ice structures, taken on a glacier tongue in Iceland.
______________________________________________________________________________
Ice is water frozen into the solid state. It can appear transparent or opaque bluish-white color, depending on the presence of impurities or air inclusions. The addition of other materials such as soil may further alter the appearance.
Ice appears in nature in forms of snowflakes, hail, icicles, glaciers, pack ice, frost, and entire polar ice caps. It is an important component of the global climate, and plays an important role in the water cycle. Furthermore, ice has numerous cultural applications, from ice cooling of drinks to winter sports and the art of ice sculpting.
The molecules in solid ice may be arranged in different ways, called phases, depending on the temperature and pressure. Usually ice is the phase known as ice Ih, which is the most abundant of the varying solid phases on the Earth's surface. The most common phase transition to ice Ih occurs when liquid water is cooled below 0°C (273.15K, 32°F) at standard atmospheric pressure. It can also deposit from vapour with no intervening liquid phase, such as in the formation of frost.
The word is derived from Old English īs, which in turn stems from Proto-Germanic isaz.

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand.
The city suffered a series of earthquakes between September 2010 and January 2012, with the most destructive of them occurring on 22 February 2011, in which 185 people were killed and thousands of buildings across the city collapsed or suffered severe damage. By late 2013, 1,500 buildings in the city had been demolished, leading to ongoing recovery and rebuilding projects across the city.
I thought I'd hit the archives from last fall for a Bald Eagle image to help celebrate National Bald Eagle Day and their incredible recovery from being an endangered species.

The Sylvenstein Reservoir, Lake Sylvenstein also called, is a fjord-like lake in Isarwinkel, south of Lenggries, on the road from Bad Tolz to Achensee in Tyrol. It was built in the years 1954 to1959 for the purposes of flood protection in the Isar valley. He may be created by people, but today almost a matter of course part of nature.

"Bulbine comes from the Latin word bulbus meaning an onion or bulb. This name is misleading, as plants do not have a bulbous base.
Bulbine frutescens is native to desert grasslands in South Africa, this plant grows best in a well-drained soil and is also very tolerant of poor, dry soil. Be careful not to over water, Bulbine does not like wet feet. Bulbine grows best in full sun, has succulent foliage, and produces racemes of star-shaped yellow with orange flowers in the summer months. Orange African Bulbine should be deadheaded to encourage more flowering. Bulbine can withstand a light frost, keep protected in colder climates.
Commonly called Bulbinella and Burn jelly plant, the sap in the leaves is used for healing in South Africa.Bulbine frutescens is one of nature's finest medicinal plants. It's a remarkable first aid medicine chest all in one.
Externally the freshly squeezed juice, frequently applied, is amazingly effective to take care of a wide range of skin conditions and wounds.
The list is almost endless: acne, burns, blisters, cold sores (even in your mouth and nose), cracked lips, cracked fingers, nails and heels, insect bites, itchy places, fever blisters, mouth ulcers, sunburn, rashes and ringworm. It's also very effective for treating wounds, sores and rashes on animals. You can also make a warm poultice and apply it to the affected area to treat any of the above as well as eczema and arthritis.
Internally an infusion (sometimes a brandy tincture) of a few fresh leaves in a cup of boiling water is taken for coughs, colds and arthritis."
So now you know what it can do, but I just bought it to enjoy the flowers!!
I finally got a shot of Latourell that I love. Shot this in pouring down rain today. The colors in the Gorge are amazing right now. Amazing. If you can, you gotta get out and do a hike in the Gorge:)

If you are wondering the reason for its expression, it was watching its children playing and fighting... ;-)
(Red panda @ Naturaviva Park, Italy; Nov. 2012)
I took a shot on this block before. Just love the look of this street. Last time was late night, I got the early morning this time around...
Serendipity struck yesterday morning at sunrise when a herd of bison grazed, snorted, grunted and protected what they were amorous about for the moment. Steam and mist rose from the water where they were lingering along the shore. The cow kept looking across the water and purposefully decided to cross - possibly thinking that human intervention would help. But no human was nuts enough to stand there as they crossed, definitely not me. This was way close enough and the photo was cropped. Right at this moment the sun rose above the thin, low clouds and fanned out across the bison, the water and the grasses. A pure moment basking in the gifts of nature and it was gone all too soon.
This photo was desaturated some because the natural color was so intense.
I am sitting in a parking lot, watching some geysers erupt and using the MiFi connection, which is surprisingly good right here. My stomach is grumbling because I ran out the door without eating - hoping to find the bison in the same place but of course they were in a dark treed area. Some later, however, I took a hike and found a stag out grazing by himself. Nice looking guy - he also came towards me and I had to back up three times. Didn't have to but I am not taking any chances. A little while later I stopped to take a landscape of the steam rising and found a bull grazing in the shadows just across the road from me. I turned and looked at him, snapped a couple of shots and his tail went up - that was enough! And I did not purposefully put myself near him - it helps to watch the shadows around here!

I'm experimenting at the moment as I've only been able to get out to the park for an hour or two, just haven't been able to do any seascapes for a while, but I hope to rectify that soon.

Driving home on the coast road when suddenly the sun pierced the clouds on an extremely overcast day. Couldn't let the moment pass. Pulled on the side of the road and took a shot.
