This particular image was done with the help of the FaceApp application, where I took a photo of the original "2002-10-31 Halloween pic-2" pic I've posted here, then just applied a rather moderate filter. This was done to help for example with the poor lighting or graininess in the original, and to have some fun. What do you think? How do I look? :-)

10/24/2002, two things happened:
a) I started hiking again
b) I started taking photos again
on the spur of the moment I took a day off of work. grabbed my old camera, some water, and a few energy bars, and went up to 'The Mountain'. things have been better ever since...I snapped this on the way there...

The only time I caught this MP15 in its very unusual paint scheme was on an early fall day way back in 2002 on the former Milwaukee Road Chicago & Evanston (C&E) Line. The crew was traveling light to pick up an empty tank car from Peerless Confectionery.
Note the battered Griswold crossing signal-the Milwaukee Road was its largest customer. The Milwaukee Road was able to successfully petition the ICC in 1979 to stop maintaining signals on the C&E due to frequent vandalism in the pre-gentrification era. In return it was reduced to 10MPH speeds and flagging major crossings.
Less than five years later this scene would just be a memory as Peerless went out of business in May of 2007 and with it freight service on this stretch of the C&E by CP successor Chicago Terminal.

"In 1991, Daniel Kirkwood "Kirk" Fordice, Jr. was the first Republican to be elected governor of Mississippi in 118 years.
"A graduate of Purdue University , Governor Fordice served two years of active duty as an engineer officer with the 1st Infantry Division of the U. S. Army and retired a colonel in the U. S. Army Reserves after serving 18 years.
"He founded Fordice Construction Company in Vicksburg and served as the president of the Associated General Contractors of America in 1990 and was named the Association's Man of the Year in 1992.
"Fordice served a second term as governor after winning reelection in 1995.
"Patricia Owens "Pat" Fordice served her state tirelessly as first lady, promoting literacy, the arts, health issues, strong families, and volunteerism. U. S. Representative Chip Pickering's remembrances best describe why Mississippians loved their first lady, "Regal yet approachable, she possessed a natural Southern elegance that transcended her term and endeared her to our hearts."

"Prior to the opening of the Jitney Jungle on the corner of South and Monroe streets in 1933, grocery stores generally sold only groceries and were "full service" establishments with clerks to gather the items on a person's list.
"The modern innovations offered at this store by owners Pete, Sr. and Bessie Nosser made it the first grocery store with the one-stop shopping approach. The Jitney was self-service, served hot meals at it lunch counter, and added a pharmacy, cafeteria, cleaners, and toy store.
"Pete immigrated from Syria in 1920 and worked as a stock boy in Joe Boolos' Openwood Street store. He planned and saved for thirteen years before opening his own store, the first of four Jitney Jungles established by the Nossers in Vicksburg .
"The flagship store, known as the 'Big Jitney,' benefited from its gregarious owner, Mr. Pete, who knew, greeted, and catered to every customer.
"He and his family also participated in community affairs, including as a member of the board of Mercy Hospital and as a director of First National Bank for 47 years.
"The 'Big Jitney' burned in 1965 and was rebuilt in 1966 at another location.
"The Glass Kitchen, owned by Fred Nosser, was a fixture in downtown from 1946 to 1986."
