PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: I've had one of these Madeline dolls for a VERY long time. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure which of these dolls is my childhood doll. Based on the hand pose and the hair, I would say it may be the doll in the very middle, with the jacket but no shoes. My Memere bought her for me around the time we got the Madeline movie. I absolutely LOVE the Madeline movie. Something about the story about an orphan girl living at a boarding school, the girl most beloved by her teacher, gripped me. Add the dramatic scene about appendicitis, a cute dog that saves her life, and a fight to save a boarding school...well, it really captured my imagination. Besides, Madeline lived in France and I happen to really love French. I've lost count of how many times I've watched the movie. I watch it often if I'm stuck home sick from work because it cheers me up. I loved pretending to be Madeline when Shelly and I decided to be make-believe characters while swimming in our pool and I immediately asked my first French teacher if my French name could be Madeline.
I still remember seeing my Madeline doll when she was new. I remember her hat, coat, and dress. I believe she may have had socks and gloves once upon a time too...but they vanished. I really wish I'd taken better care of Madeline. I absolutely loved that she had a scar painted on her and a cute little black bow!
I mostly played with her, when I was really young, in this dollhouse my grandparents' friend gave me, unless she was sleeping in Molly's canopy bed with Molly. While I initially thought I was much younger when I got Madeline (like second grade), I'm thinking I must have gotten her closer to 1999--when the film came out. I initially thought I'd been younger because I played with her a lot in my dollhouse--which I was mostly into in early elementary school. So, I could've been younger but I think I was probably twelve or thirteen when I got my first Madeline. I spent hours playing with her in my dollhouse. She lived in it with my Georgette figurine, who was bossy and made her stay in the one bedroom. Even though she was the only real doll in the dollhouse and I could have given her the run of the entire place, she lived in the small upstairs bedroom. Her bed was the little one that her feet hung way off of, whereas Georgette, who was her boss or something, had the longer bed in the bigger room. I think most of Madeline when I see the house, even though I used it for my Bambi figurines back in first grade and originally considered it theirs. I guess that it's most likely because I find all toys interesting, but like dolls the best--and Madeline was a cherished doll to me. I'm not sure why I never incorporated her into our dolly games. She's a close enough scale. Of course, I had her before dolls of unique proportions like Bratz, Monster High, and Liv existed, so I probably thought she looked too strange. Now, I don't know why I never saw her as a full-fledged fashion doll, even as a grown up. I even tried to make her clothes as a kid, so I know I was very keen on her. Whenever she wasn't in the dollhouse, she slept beside Molly. When I started seventh grade (fall 2000), my dollhouse was disassembled and I moved downstairs. From then on, she stayed with Molly and her things. She stayed one of Molly's possessions for a long time but was moved out of Molly's trunk recently when we did some (much needed) spring cleaning in there. At some point, I threw some of the other Madeline dolls that I acquired as an adult in there with her and they all got mixed up!
Madeline is special to me because of Memere and Pepere. Memere gave me Madeline and Pepere assembled the dollhouse that I mostly think of as Madeline's home. Memere also made the bedding for Molly's bed, and Madeline slept there most nights. Also, Madeline reminds me of some of the BEST memories I have of my Molly doll--from the early days when she shared Molly's homemade bed to the golden days of sitting on my bed playing with Molly, Madeline, and Katharine (Molly's Christmas doll) when I was a freshman in high school.
Because Madeline strongly reminds me of some of my favorite memories and two of the people who loved me most, I have never been able to turn away a homeless Madeline doll who finds her way into a bin of dolls. Most of these girls were actually acquired in 2011 when we were flea marketing with Dad. Back then, we were more selective about who stayed and who got donated. Madeline dolls were never on the top of our "collecting" list (as I said, she spent loads of time just hiding in Molly's trunk) but I was unable to turn these girls away. I am really glad that, even when we were choosier, that I opted to keep them. I find them VERY cute and I think it's AMAZING how many Madeline dolls and outfits they've made like my doll. Now, if I played dolls, I would have a few outfits to fit her and I could easily include her, whether a main cast member or minor character. Also, although I can't tell them apart, I know more than one of these dolls was purchased the last year we went to the flea market with Dad. So, not only do they bring back childhood memories of my grandparents, but they remind me of times we had as a family the last summer with Dad.
I know for a fact that I got the doll furthest to the right in the "Oldie Moldies" lot of July 2019. While this bin couldn't compete with the sentiment of "Bratz Guy Bin" from 2011, where I remember getting some Madeline dolls, this bin definitely stands out. We bought the lot--which actually consisted of THREE containers--mostly for the playset. We didn't even get twenty dolls, but a lot of quality playsets. Sadly, the dolls were covered in the smelliest black mold I'd ever seen. The playsets and accessories fared much better. I'm so glad we rescued them. In 2011, we saw a cardboard box of Barbies that were very moldy at a flea market. I bought one of my Sun Sensations Skippers. It has been a regret that we didn't save the whole box. I often wonder if those other dolls found a good home or if they got thrown out. I'm so glad we're the ones who rescued these dolls--mostly motivated by a grocery store and Mini Van, to be honest--because they were in such a pitiful state. Madeline wasn't as moldy as some of the others. I remembered right away that all my complete Madeline clothing items were already being worn, but that I had another Eden Toys dress in storage. She wore that for about six years--then Shelly found the charming fashion pack she's wearing now, in November 2025!
