The Mercat de Colom is a modernist-style building in the city of Valencia located in the Pla del Remei district, renovated in 2003 and now equipped with luxury shops and restaurants. It was built to meet the demand of the bourgeois Eixample of Valencia, in full swing in 1914, when it was designed by the architect Francesc Mora i Berenguer and in 1916, when it was inaugurated. It is an extraordinary example of modernist and historicist architecture in the Valencian construction tradition, the most Gaudí in the city, and a historical-artistic monument since 1983.

Taken during a visit to Berlin in 1983. Scanned from an old slide. "Better to jump (over the wall) than be counted (among the sheep)." "Better to vote than be counted." Or something like that. Mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut.
Things have changed a wee bit since 1983. The Newmarket Sub is now an overpass for GO service, and a 4th track has been added to give 2 Mac Yard bypass tracks. The world has encroached a little as well. 5 GP40-2's have the Temagami Or Train in hand as they head for a crew change at Jane St.
Union Pacific 1983 North, leading a Stack train on the BNSF Seattle Subdivision with Union Pacific’s trackage rights from North Portland Jct. to Reservation, or put another way, Portland, Oregon to Tacoma, Washington.
The 1983 is an EMD model SD70Ace, a modern, high-horsepower freight workhorse with low-end rumble and with the dynamic brake whine make it easy to pick out in a consist.
I am asked occasionally about missing the “working “part of railroading, my usual answer is only the “sound.” The job changes, the scenery changes, the consists change, but the sound of horsepower digging into a ruling grade is timeless. As a side note about grades, I have always been proud to say that I was qualified on three different Western Mountain grades, Stampede (my home territory) and Stevens Pass both here at home, and Tehachapi Pass, California in 1998 on loan to the Southwest Division after the BN/ATSF merger.
I love this location, the composition is simple, as my photography mentor used to call a shot like this “Three-Quarter Brain Rot’” a classic photographer inside joke.
I love shooting here for the sound more than the Brain Rot. Northbound traffic tops Napavine Hill the ruling grade on the Seattle Subdivision here, the long lens helps show that. Being Painted in Western Pacific colors is the icing on the cake, as part of Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet certainly does not hurt the composition either.

When you get into photography you have to start somewhere and for me it was Christmas 2008 when I received my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel XSi. I had used one of my Dad's Olympus film cameras here and there prior but it wasn't until I got the Rebel that my interest in photography took off.
As I'm sure many of you out there can relate, looking back at early photos can make you cringe! I had no concept of light, sun angles, or composition back then and I really seemed into taking roster shots of the power and not including much, if any, of the train.
During the summer of 2009 Union Pacific's power desk was running duos, trios, and even a quartet of their heritage locomotives on their Chicago to Los Angeles 'K' train service. I had the good fortune of catching a few of those colorful trains in SoCal that summer, unfortunately, I have few presentable photos to show for those early efforts. No matter, the memories of those trips are priceless. I was still in high school in 2009 and during my summer break while my dad was at work my grandpa took me on many railfan adventures, including this one...
The sun has just climbed above the mountains that ring Cajon Pass and illuminates the UP 1983 (WP) and 1996 (SP) as they bring the KLAG1 up the old 'north track' alignment at Pine Lodge. UP 1995 (C&NW) was on the rear as a DPU.
I recently came across this photo and while it is nothing special photogenically...it sure brings back good memories. What I would give to be trackside with Gramps again!
Thanks for looking back with me.

This outfit came with a sailors duffel bag in red and the white jacket she's holding under her arm.
Sold with blue square toed shoes but advertised with white mules like this.

I photographed this in 2015 and don't recall seeing it since, so good to know it's still on the road.
172,000 miles at the last MOT and increasing numbers of rust fails, along with fair numbers of emission fails which often accompany a low usage car.
Present owner since 2013.
The dealer sticker looks to say "Warstones" but I can't find anything anywhere, including the contemporary Saab dealer list, of that name.
