This was the last year in which the Bantam was built, BSA was going under, along with all the other British motorcycling firms due to the Japenese invasion of the '60s. The Japenese bikes offered less engine life, slower top speeds, less fuel efficiency. They included indicators and every mod con that was going, and they were most importantly cheaper. This was probably the single most factor that caused the revolution, the change in attitudes towards manufacturing. The British bikes were built to last forever, the Japenese bikes were not. From a classic owners point of view in latter days however, that is a godsend. The Bantam is easy to work on, most parts are able to be simply replaced by the lay-man, requiring little specialist skill save for wheel building and cylinder boring. Apart from being the most numerous of classic motorcycles, the long lifetime of the model (23 years), its simplicity and general good looks make it the epitomy of the classic British motorcycle.

The Piaggio Ape (pronounced "ah-peh" - Italian for bee ) is a three-wheeled light commercial vehicle first produced in 1948 by Piaggio.
At the end of WWII, most Italians, badly affected by the war, lacked modes of transport, and more importantly, the financial means to acquire full-sized four-wheeled vehicles. In 1947 the inventor of the Vespa, aircraft designer Corradino D'Ascanio, came up with the idea of building a light three wheeled commercial vehicle to power Italy's economical reconstruction, an idea which found favour with Enrico Piaggio, the son of the firm's founder, Rinaldo. The very first Ape model and the mark immediately following it were mechanically a Vespa with two wheels added to the rear, with a flat-bed structure on top of the rear axle. In the early sale brochures and adverts the vehicle was referred to as the VespaCar or TriVespa and cost 170.000 liras. The first Apes featured 50cc, 125cc or 150cc and more recently 175cc engines. By the time of the 1964 Ape D a cab was added to protect the driver from the elements. The Ape has been in continuous production since its inception and has been produced in a variety of different body styles in Italy and India.
Controlled with scooter style handlebars, the original Ape was designed to sit one, but can accommodate a passenger (with a tight fit) in its cab. A door on each side is provided, making it quicker to get out of the vehicle when making deliveries to different sides of the road. Performance is suited to the job of light delivery, with good torque for hills but a low top speed, which is irrelevant in the urban settings for it was designed. Outside of towns Apes are customarily driven as close as possible to the curb to allow traffic to pass.
The vehicles comes in various configurations such as vans and pickups for load carrying and autorickshaw (Tuk-tuk) for human transportation. More recently Piaggio have made lifestyle models such as the Ape Cross Country and the Ape Web aimed at the young.

'Conceived by les Ateliers Électromagnétiques de la Seine and produced by the SNCAN aircraft company, the Inter could be summed up as a French equivalent of the Messerschmitt.' – 'Beaulieu Encyclopedia of the Automobile'.
This charming French microcar looks very much like a 'car of the future' from the 1950s; indeed, it is easy to imagine it emerging from a flying saucer in a science fiction movie of the period. The Inter 'Auto Scooter' was built at SNCAN's factory near Lyon and first shown to the public at the Salon de l'Auto in 1953. Its aviation connections are obvious - it looks just like the cockpit and nose section of a contemporary light aircraft - while the tilting canopy was another feature it shared with the German Messerschmitt, as was the tandem seating arrangement for the two occupants. Motive power was supplied by a 175cc Ydral single-cylinder two-stroke engine, which drove the rear wheel via a three-speeds-plus-reverse gearbox and chain final drive. Unusually, the Inter's two front wheels could be folded up to reduce the body's width of 135cm by around 45cm, making it possible to store the vehicle in one's shed. Only some 300 Inters were manufactured from 1954 to 1956, with a few others assembled from parts up to 1958. It is estimated that around 38 cars remain today in collections and museums worldwide, with only a few among them still in running order.
This particular Inter was discovered in a barn a few years ago, in running order and original. The vehicle was then completely restored by Auto Classic Restauration in Normandy, and photographs and invoices relating to the restoration may be found in the history file. Guaranteed to turn heads at any motoring event, this quite delightful Inter microcar is one of the best of the surviving examples.

Messerschmidt were temporarily banned from building aircraft following World War II and had turned to producing other products, in 1952 they were approached by Fritz Fend with a view to manufacturing a small motor model was the KR175 launched in 1952 powered by a 175cc engine. based on his Fend Flitzer invalid carriage. Replaced in 1955 by the larger engined KR200 which incorporated the same basic frame as the KR175 with changes to the bodywork (notably including wheel cutouts in the front fenders) and an improved canopy design and had a car type throttle and clutch, Dyna start and a reversible engine. THe KR200 was powered by a 91cc Fichtel & Sachs air-cooled, single cylinder, two-stroke engine positioned in front of the rear wheel. ] The rear suspension and engine mounting were reworked, and hydraulic shock absorbers were installed at all three wheels. Retailing for around DM 2,500, the KR200 was considered an instant success with almost 12,000 built during its first year, maximum speed was probably determined by the bravery of its pilot but due its lightweight the little car was capable of a speed in excess of 90 km/h (56 mph)
In 1956, around a year after West Germany joined NATO, Messerschmitt was allowed to manufacture aircraft again and lost interest in Fend's microcars. Messerschmitt sold the Regensburg works to Fend who, with brake and hub supplier Valentin Knott, formed Fahrzeug- und Maschinenbau GmbH Regensburg (FMR) to continue production of the KR200 but as the German and other economies began to recover sales of the bubble car derivatives decline and Messerchmidt car production ceased

An alternative to cabs in Thailand.
The tuk-tuk (ตุ๊กตุ๊ก or ตุ๊กๆ in Thai) is the Southeast Asian version of a vehicle known elsewhere as an auto rickshaw or cabin cycle. It is a widely used form of urban transport in Bangkok and other Thai cities, as well as other major Southeast Asian and South Asian cities. It is particularly popular where traffic congestion is a major problem, such as in Bangkok. Tuk-tuks were introduced in Brighton, England on 10th July 2006, where a fleet of twelve (spelt TucTuc) operate using compressed natural gas, as the first motorised rickshaw service in Europe, between Brighton Marina and Hove, via Brighton railway station.
The tuk-tuk may have a sheet metal body (painted mild steel) or open frame with canvas roof and drop-down sides. Some have ornate tin ornamental hammerings or carvings for decoration. The roof may be either mild steel or a water proofed canvas, riveted to round tubing. Water proof removable sides can be added in the rainy season. Resting on three small wheels (one in front, two on the rear), there is a small cabin for the driver in the front and seating for three in relative comfort in the rear. They are very maneuverable and can turn around in one lane of traffic with room to spare.
Tuk-tuks are generally fitted with a water cooled two-stroke engine. They have handlebar controls instead of a steering wheel, making them a tricycle. The tuk-tuk is named after the sound its two-stroke engine makes when it is idling. It may have been derived from a similar Japanese non-motorised automobile in the 1950s, although tuk-tuks of the type used in Brighton, England evolved from the Vespa scooter, (later Bajaj of India), using old Piaggio Vespa pattern tooling and a Piaggio-derived 175cc engine. These were the front half of a Vespa, with an axle created for the rear, badged (in Vespa-style) as the Ape. These were used with truck bodies, pick-up bodies and eventually taxi bodies. Later the legshields were extended all the way up and over to create a roof. They generally are low geared, to allow the small engine to move comparatively large loads. Given the low gearing, Tuk-tuks have a high torque to weight ratio and can accelerate quite quickly making them nimble, especially in heavy traffic. The lack of high speed capability is irrelevant in heavy urban traffic.
Tuk-tuk drivers may have migrated from the provinces and have a reputation for not knowing the city in which they work very well, therefore getting people lost. Tuk-tuks do not have meters and users generally bargain with the driver for a price to take them to a specified destination. In Bangkok, there is now a maximum fee which drivers may not exceed. This has tended to become the default fee for foreigners. As with all unmetered transport, not agreeing to a fee before departure can risk unethical practice by the driver.
Drivers also earn money by having advertising posters and placards on their tuk-tuks. In early 2005 many of them were covered in advertising for the 6 February election. Tuk-tuk drivers can earn fuel vouchers or other commissions by diverting passengers to certain businesses that cater to tourists, possibly against the passenger's expressed wishes. Most drivers also decorate their tuk-tuks with religious charms and small Buddha images.

The 175 Sport was first displayed at the end of 1956 and was followed shortly afterwards by the 175T with a slightly detuned engine. Although the aluminium overhead-camshaft engine was based on the Gran Sport, the crankcases were now die cast and the cylinder head was in one piece. The chassis too was based on the Gran Sport with a single down tube frame that utilized the engine as a stressed member. Setting the 175 Sport apart from other motorcycles in 1957 was the sculptured fuel tank. Designed to follow function, it featured arm recesses to allow a crouched rider to hug the motorcycle while gripping the clip-on handle bars. There were even eyelets in the tank to secure a chin pad for racers who really wanted to get their head down. There were detail changes to the 175 Sport and 175T over the next few years; in 1958 the 175 Sport received a dual silencer and also a revised carburettor and from 1959 there was a tuning kit available with a larger carburettor and a racing cam shaft. These kits were fitted by the supplying dealers and the motorcycles became the 175 Super Sport.

Here is the prototype reduction system for the 200. This will give me a primary and secondary reduction while still allowing me to pedal the bike.
UPDATE! The Sportsman reduction drive system is the best in the industry. Proven in three separate land speed records. Current 175cc class record holder at 73.526 mph! While some of you guys are dreaming I am setting records. Available only with purchase of Sportsman 200 or the exclusive Bonneville Flyer. Of course cool builders will always be handled accordingly with limited availability. I have sold numerous assemblies complete with all mounts for the engine, the entire reduction drive unit. and of course the offset matched split racing sprockets with .Sportsman rear drum hub. Twin disk centrifugal clutch assemblies and gearing choices from wheelies to 90 mph.

František Janeček began manufacturing Wanderer motorcycles under licence in 1927 in order to diversify the interests of his arms factory. Having bought the tooling for a 500cc model, in 1929 he rebranded the machine with the name JAWA, derived from the first two letters of the words "Janacek" and "Wanderer". It was a shaft-drive model with a pressed steel frame, powered by a 498cc OHV engine.
In 1930 the English designer George-William Patchett joined the new company, resulting in faster, more robust chain-driven machines which although not commercially successful did well in competition. Villiers-licenced deflector two-strokes were incorporated into a lightweight range which proved popular, and in 1934 they also built DKW style flat-top two-strokes.
The 1930s also saw middleweight 350s of SV and OHV configuration, also Patchett designed, and just before war broke out they built the Josef Jozif designed 98cc Robot. Patchett returned to England for the duration to work for Royal Enfield and other arms manufacturers, but Jawa did not remain idle during the Nazi occupation. They secretly developed an advanced single-cylinder twostroke with telescopic front suspension, plunger rear and an automatic clutch. In 1947 they took over the Ogar factory and resumed production, producing the highly successful two-strokes as well as exotic DOHC racers. Subsequently they incorporated the Eso marque and began producing speedway machines.
During the mid 1930s the company also produced a range of cars and utility vehicles.
In the late 1960s they imported Italjet components to produce the Type 23 Mustang. These were eventually assembled with all locally manufactured components and the model continued until 1981.
