New Mexico Museum of Space History
This scene from the highly popular 1995 film, Apollo 13, takes place moments after an oxygen tank exploded in the Service Module. The Guidance, Navigation, and Control ("GNC") Flight Controller warns Flight Director Gene Kranz (played by Ed Harris) that the spacecraft may rotate into “gimbal lock.”
"Gimbal lock" would align two or more gyroscope gimbals and then flip them out of position. The crew would then have to perform the difficult task of realigning the gyro platform using the space sextant, telescope, and computer keyboard you see in this display case. Of note, portions of this unit actually flew on the dramatic Apollo 13 mission in 1970.
Portions of this Primary Guidance, Navigation, and Control System (PGNCS) (pronounced "pings") unit also flew on Apollo 14, 15, 16, as well the three manned Skylab space station missions. The telescope and sextant you can actually look through were used by the astronauts traveling to the Moon on Apollo 14 and 16.
Because of a recall of beryllium metals throughout the government in the 1970s and 1980s for critical defense needs, the existence of a complete Apollo PGNCS, like this, is rare. This is one of only two complete units known to exist. The other is at the Draper Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

I bought a coffee and a cake from the market in Cambridge as a wee treat. For a few months I've been between jobs, but things seemed to be making a turn around (and as it happens, it did - I'm no longer looking!). I joined Thea and Graham on a bench in the square and chatted about Australia (where they are from), their various travels (which all sound exciting) and a bit about myself. They were so warm and friendly, a stark contrast to the generally "keep yourself to yourself" attitude that often prevails on the street. Both agreed to a portrait, but only one can make the project and I have chosen Thea through a coin toss.

...to 15 days straight on the road.
Within those two weeks this guy dealt with: 4 flat tires, 2 stuck trucks, 1 van stuck in 2nd gear, a permit that was pulled after 3 months of negotiation, 1 car accident, a trip to urgent care, and then another one.
The list continues but those are the highlights.
Oh! And a cattle stampede.
I'm so glad I don't have his job.
P.S. Film was exposed to 100 degree weather and 12% humidity. Then a week later 90 degree weather and 100% humidity. Film's version of an emotional roller coaster.
Erika J. Kafwimi '13 graduated from St. Francis girl high school in Mbeya, Tanzania as the top female student in the national level final examinations. She went on to receive a presidential award-- a merit based award-- after leading in Tanzania’s biological sciences examinations. While at St. Francis, Kafwimi played flute with her school band in school, community, and national events. Upon graduation, she received the only scholarship offered to a Tanzanian by the late Canadian Prime Minister and Canada's Nobel Peace Laureate, Lester B. Pearson to attend a United World College in Vancouver, Canada for two years. In her two years in Canada, Kafwimi served as a president of the environmental sustainability group, she served as the facilitator of the model United Nation debate team and completed with an A grade, the bilingual International Baccalaureate Diploma. At Dartmouth, Kafwimi majors in Economics and pre-health. She is the founder of the African peer mentorship program, she serves as the teaching assistant in the physiology lab, and she is the undergraduate advisor in the French Hall. Also, Kafwimi has been currently nominated and accepted to be part of the new Academic Undergraduate Advising program, that will take off in the fall of 2012. She also works with two Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center professors in East African-based research projects in areas of HIV/AIDS and violence against women as a result of witchcraft beliefs. Kafwimi also sings in the African chorus and Wellspring worship center. Upon graduation, Kafwimi will spend a year working with a Tanzania based medical research institution working to advance HIV vaccines research or a development agency focusing on economically empowering people living with HIV/AIDS. After a year in Tanzania, she hopes to return and attend graduate school with a focus on sub-Saharan African development.
